  • "This is an excellent holiday property."

The renovation of the lovely old building feels like a labour of love. It is comfortable, clean, well-equipped and very spacious. The location is tranquil and relaxing, with walks directly from the property. There are plenty of interesting places to visit nearby, including Minehead, Dunster, Porlock and Exmoor, with no shortage of good cafes and tea gardens. We booked for 5 nights, but liked it so much that we added a further week!

  • "Great property, exactly as described."

Could only be improved by provision of mains socket for hairdryer by mirror and shaver socket in Suite 1 and outside drying facility for laundry.

  • "It would be nice to have a mirror in the main bedroom."

My wife was too short to use the one in the bathroom. Overall the property was perfect for four old codgers wanting a bit of peace and quiet. Sitting in the garden with a jug of Pimms and sun beating down on us was ideal.

  • "Excellent accommodation - the historic buildings are well-appointed, well-maintained and welcoming."

The architecture, furniture and decor combine to convey a very comfortable impression of centuries of domestic occupation. Easy to relax into! Within convenient reach of local services in Minehead, and well situated for the Somerset coast and Exmoor, but also a lovely place to simply relax and enjoy.

  • "We had a lovely time at this amazing property."

It is spacious and has so much character but still managed to be cosy and so welcoming. It is very well equipped and the kitchen has everything you could need. The beds are super comfortable and the lounge was an ideal place to relax. The grounds are lovely and we are already missing watching the baby lambs in the paddock by the front door. There are many nearby places to visit, loved Porlock and Watchet in particular. We would recommend this house without hesitation. Special mention to Angie, the housekeeper, who was super helpful.

  • "This has to be one of the best properties I have stayed in, of which there have been many and the perfect place to spend Christmas."

Angie the Housekeeper prepared the house to perfection and could not have been more helpful. Aluric’s Hall offers a rare opportunity to stay in a medieval home furnished to a high specification with antiques and artwork surrounded by beautiful countryside and wonderful walks. This is one for the connoisseur and the sort of property usually found on a specialist site at more than double the price so very tempted to keep this a secret but don’t feel that’s fair to the owners who went over and above to make everything so perfect. Roland provided us with an unlimited amount of wood for the fire (all included in the price) and the extremely talented Clare made all our Christmas decorations including some using wool from her very friendly sheep. I never write reviews as having spent many years in the hospitality industry always manage to find fault and cause to complain but this is a real gem book it whilst you can before the secret get out.

  • "Had a lovely week in this well presented and immaculately clean lovely old house which was very well equipped."

A perfect stay for two couples with a spacious kitchen, lovely lounge and two large en suite bedrooms. We much appreciated the port, chocolates and flowers which were a lovely touch. The house is situated in peaceful countryside with walks close by and near to the beautiful village of Dunster.

  • "We had a wonderful week in this lovely house which is even more beautiful and spacious than it looks in the photos!"

It’s perfect for two couples as the two bedrooms and bathrooms are equally comfortable and inviting. The house is generously equipped and was beautifully prepared by Angie. The flowers, chocolates and other treats on arrival were a lovely touch. The location is ideal for walkers as there are many lovely walks straight from the house including a very pleasant walk to Minehead. We also enjoyed trips to Exmoor, East Quantoxhead and Lytnton and Lynmouth. All in all it’s one of the nicest holiday homes we’ve stayed in and we hope to return.

  • "The house was immaculately clean when we arrived - thank you to Angie, the housekeeper."

The fresh flowers, port and chocolates were a lovely welcoming gift as well. This is more a cherished home than a holiday let. All of the furnishings and artwork have been lovingly chosen to enhance the historical features of the house and there is every modern comfort that you could wish for. The kitchen is very well equipped and the super king sized bed was so comfortable. We were half expecting the house to be a little chilly, considering its great age and the size of the rooms, but the heating was very efficient and there was always plenty of hot water. We lit the log burner every evening and we were very cosy - there is also a plentiful supply of logs. If you are looking for peace and quiet this is an ideal location. Apart from the rooks nest building and visits from Clare's flock of sheep in the orchard there was no other noise. Absolute bliss. This is an exceptional property - the best we've stayed in - and we booked a return visit for the autumn as soon as we were home. Many thanks to the owners for a very special stay.

The property

Perfectly positioned to explore the dramatic tidal shores and wild moorland of Exmoor is Aluric's Hall.

Beautifully crafted from the exceptional remains of a medieval Manor House in the picturesque hamlet of Bratton, this listed home from home is perfect for couples and friends seeking a peaceful getaway in a rural location. From your dedicated parking area, approach the hall via a tree covered path to discover this 13th century timber-framed building with its immense stone walls, ancient beams and wood panelling.

Exquisite parquet flooring leads from the entrance hall to the spacious, light filled living areas; a pillared sitting room with a welcoming woodburning stove offers your group ample space in which to sit and chat, and a snug with a TV in which to relax.

The farmhouse style kitchen enjoys fabulous views over the adjoining orchard and fields, with a long refectory style dining table, providing the perfect social space in which to enjoy a meal and recount your days adventures.

On the first floor, you’ll find two superb suites with antique timber flooring, bespoke artwork and pretty fabrics, each boasting a super king sized bed and its own bath/shower room.

An additional ('snoring') room is available for daytime naps or noisy sleepers!

Exmoor National Park is a Dark Sky Reserve and a wonderful base for star gazing.

Nearby are a plethora of beaches to explore – from sandy Minehead and Dunster to the primal storm beaches running from Porlock Weir to Bossington, Lee Bay (rock pools and sand at low tide), Combe Martin and of course the fossil-rich headland and bay at Blue Anchor – but do be aware of the tide!

For those that love to be at one with nature, Exmoor is laced with winding cliff paths, footpaths and bridleways encompassing open heather-clad moorland.

Walk the rugged South West Coast Path, Coleridge Way or try some of the world class mountain biking trails for every skill level.

For a more sedate pace, enjoy a picnic at Tarr Steps, with its ancient clapper bridge or spend a day meandering through Medieval Dunster.

Aluric’s Hall is a very special retreat in a wonderful location.

About the location

PORLOCK

Minehead 5.5 miles; Lynton 11 miles.

Porlock is a quaint village, popular with tourists due its character, proximity to the lovely North Somerset coastline and situation within the Exmoor National Park. There are plenty of little gift shops along with pubs, cafes and restaurants to be found and only two miles away, the picturesque harbour of Porlock Weir offers wonderful views across the Bristol Channel. The Porlock Hill takes travelers up a steep, winding road out of the village to the Exmoor Hills, where walkers, horse riders and cyclists will love the open space, where ponies and red deer roam the moors. In 2011, Exmoor was designated as Europe’s first International Dark Skies Reserve, and so this is an excellent base for a romantic evening spent gazing at the stars, where a clear night unveils an abundance of interesting constellations to the naked eye. Porlock offers the choice of sea fishing from the weir, and the reservoirs and rivers of Exmoor are only a short, scenic drive away. Golfers can stay in Porlock and enjoy one of the several courses on the edges of Exmoor, with the nearest only seven miles away. The medieval village of Dunster, where the castle dominates the skyline, makes a great day out, or take a ride on the West Somerset steam train along the coast to the little harbour village of Watchet. A fabulous village location with lots of outdoor pursuits to interest every visitor.
