  • "A warm welcome and farewell from the owner."

The property is well presented and maintained, located on the edge of a beautiful village, in a rural setting with views across the countryside. All we needed to have an enjoyable, stress free and comfortable stay was provided including a comprehensive information pack recommending local places to visit, shop and eat, walks and instructions for every appliance at The Retreat.

  • "We had spent 5 amazing nights at the accommodation, as a group of 9 with elderly and children."

The key highlights of the stay was the lovely, aesthetically pleasing yet practical, modern and clean accommodation. It is a lovely house with plenty of space and a very nice and well looked after garden. The combined kitchen/dining area was the central part of the house for us as the whole group can be in the same area yet be able to naturally split off to do our own thing eg. cooking in the kitchen, having tea or preparing the ingredients in the dining area, and kids playing and watching TV in the corner. We enjoyed our meals under the sky roof in the dining area and sliding doors to the garden. We had also used the barbecue grill for one evening, which we got help with operating the gas supply from the host very quickly and easily. All amenities were well thought out from wash basin sensored lights, to night light hand torches that turn on automatically for finding the toilets at night. All appliances are very modern. To accommodate for 10 people, all appliances, amenities and space were good and of quality. As a bonus we were greeted by the friendly host and we were welcomed with cake, wine and farm shop milk which we enjoyed. We also refilled the milk once with standard milk and chocolate orange milk at the farm shop nearby. The stay was wonderful and we very much enjoyed our holiday.

The owner, Lucy, greeted us at the door and had made a cake for us. There was fresh milk in the fridge, bubbles for the grown ups and Easter treats for the children. The house itself was incredible. There were 10 of us and we had plenty of space. Despite the weather being awful, we had a wonderful stay. Thank you Lucy and John for a wonderful holiday. If you are planning to stay, just be aware, Google Maps tried to take me to the house using the wrong side of 'South Road', so just make sure you enter the road from the village rather than alongside the farm.

  • "We had a lovely week at The retreat."

There was plenty of space for all 7 adults and 2 kids who spent most of the time playing in the garden and picking fruit. While the adults enjoyed the views with peace and quite. Everything was provided by the host with an excellent fully equipped kitchen.. only issue we had was working out how to use the state of the art oven and hob but a file with all the info was on hand. The rooms are a good size and we had a put up bed for our daughter in our room. It was mentioned that there was too much light shining through early morning and would have liked curtains however this was the teenager. It’s worth mentioning that if you get a delivery of food they may get lost finding you do collect. We would love to stay here again and highly recommend The Retreat.

Perfect for a weekend away with friends and our children. The property was beautiful and spotless! It had everything you could ever need, along with a lovely welcome gift! (the cake was delicious!) The little ones loved playing in the garden and hiding under the stairs (that was their favourite spot). The property felt safe and secure with plenty of floor space for them to play. The showers were amazing and we all found the beds really comfortable. Lucy and John were brilliant hosts, very friendly and accommodating. John took the time to show us photos of the Retreat before they started work on the property. It was fascinating to see what the old building looked like and find out about the amount of work that went into creating what it is today. What a wonderful weekend! Thank you both! The Retreat is certainly a treat and the most beautiful place to escape too. We loved looking out into the field next door to see the cows daily and spend time in the beautiful garden, watching the kids running around, playing football and having a bbq in the sun. It was a haven we wish we could stay in forever. There are not a lot of places we have visited where we instantly felt at home but that's exactly how you felt from the minute you walked in the door. The house is IMMACULATE, so thoroughly clean and with so much consideration for everyone. All the little details really go a long way including milk for drinks, chocomilk for the kids, fizz for the adults and a delicious home baked cake! Lucy and John were so welcoming and couldn't have done more for us. We can't recommend this place enough and will certainly be returning! Thank you again from Kerry and the rest of the family :-)

The owners were amazing, great welcome and a tour from them, little welcoming touches were amazing and we felt very welcomed! Everything was super clean and all the appliances were easy to use and modern. Only very slight critique, it should say this is a 3.5 bathroom rather than 4 bathrooms. We had great communication with Lucy in the lead up to our arrival who was super helpful, and were warmly welcomed! Special treats awaited us… the almond and honey cake was delicious and fresh milk from the local dairy! The Retreat has everything you could want for a holiday stay, they have thought of everything and it’s truly a home from home. The accommodation is so immaculately kept my father-in-law questioned more than once whether we were in fact, the first guests to stay. Waking up to views of the fields & countryside was a delight & stepping out the front door we were greeted by horse riders coming down the quiet residential road. The village of Lympsham is very pretty and well-kept, the cricket green is a short walk past the church and primary school & there is a local shop where you can pick up any necessities and the paper. We ate in both nights of our stay as we were so happy with our surroundings, nobody wanted to leave on the Sunday! Thanks for a fabulous stay.

Once a year we choose to go away somewhere with the family - there are 10 of us including my disabled sister with cerebral palsy. I am not exaggerating when I say we all entered 'the Retreat' and in unison said 'wow!'. Each room we entered was another lot of wows! The house is so beautifully and thoughtfully designed. There are comfortable spaces within the house to relax with others or, if you choose, have a quiet time by yourself. Having an ensuite room downstairs was convenient for my disable sister who is a wheelchair user. We were very touched by your generosity of a 'welcome pack'. We have packed a lot activities into our 4 days knowing we were heading back to a beautiful and cozy 'Retreat' every evening. Thank you John and Lucy for making us all feel so welcome and for being there at the end of the telephone/text/emails to answer any query that we had. You have thought about everything! We have enjoyed reading other guests comments and you so deserve all the wonderful praise. Absolutely spotless! Thank you and see you again hopefully soon!

  • "Nice, mostly well equipped property with plenty of space for 2 families of 4."

I say mostly as the showers and hot water system are not suitable for 8 people, after 3 quick showers hot water runs dry and you need to wait 40 minutes for it to reheat for your next 3 showers. (The owner didn't see this was to much of a problem, its an eco system). Our new year's stay was ruined by the attitude of the owners, prior to our arrival we asked the owner in writing for permission to set off fireworks to see in the new year to which we received a prompt reply saying that yes we could, "no problem". However as soon as we started the fireworks at 6pm, not midnight to be considerate to the local residents, we were promptly stopped by the owner who didn't realise the fireworks would be loud. This spoilt our new years celebrations, the purpose of our visit and left 4 young children extremely upset and the adults annoyed, had the owner said no to the fireworks in the first instance we could of made other arrangements and saved our money. We spent £150 on fireworks that we cannot use, the owner refused any compensation. We would not recommend or stay at this property again.

We have been welcoming guests to The Retreat for over 3 years and during this time we have enjoyed providing a superb standard of accommodation, paying particular attention to every detail making sure our guests have the best possible holiday. We believe this is reflected in the fact that all previous reviews are overwhelmingly positive and full of praise. We are sorry this group of guests felt their stay was not up to standard and would ask potential future guests, for their reassurance, to read through any of our other reviews. Property Owner

They made us feel welcome on arrival with a bottle of Cava and a homemade cake waiting for us in the kitchen. The house exceeded our expectations and nothing was too much trouble for our hosts. We used all of the facilities available to us during our stay, the BBQ and patio area, table tennis in the garage, badminton in the lovely garden, even the bikes. A great holiday was had by all.

  • "All i can say is staying at the cottage exceeded anything we could have hoped for, there were 10 of us altogether including small children and we had ample space."

The house is simply outstanding with everything you could want during your stay. Lucy and John are on hand for anything you want to ask and are the best hosts, nothing is too much trouble for them. We were welcomed with a home made cake and fresh milk from the local farm, Lucy even left comforters for our 2 little grandchildren in their travel cots which was a very special touch and they loved them. We had my 90 year old mother with us too and the ground floor bedroom and ensuite suited brilliantly, also we had no problem moving her wheelchair and walker around in the house. Lots to do in the area most only a short drive away, make sure you visit Brent House Farm for your Milk :) There is a large gas bar b q which we used whilst relaxing in the gorgeous garden. We will certainly be back to stay again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Retreat 10/10

  • "We had an amazing stay at The Retreat lympsham to celebrate my 40th birthday."

Absolutely gorgeous house, the pictures are lovely but really don’t reflect the size and layout of the house. We were a family of 6 adults and 3 children and there was so much space. Beautiful furnishings. The owners who live next door greated us and showed us around and left us with bubbly, fresh milk from the local farm, homemade cake and sweets. Would love to return in summer months to make the most of the huge bifold doors and patio area. Fabulous place.

  • "We had a wonderful holiday at The Retreat with 3 generations of our family."

..6 adults and 4 children aged 18months to 9 years. It is a beautiful property, immaculately decorated and furnished with first rate appliances and contains everything you could need for a relaxing break. The pictures don't do the house justice, as it is far more spacious than it appears. Lucy and John were excellent hosts and welcomed us with delicious cake, bubbly, fresh farm milk and sweet treats for the children. Knowing that they were close by for any help or advice was very reassuring, especially when we ordered a delivery to the wrong post code! The Retreat is in a great location for exploring the area, as there is so much to see and do within a 10-15 mile radius, from the grandeur of Cheddar Gorge to the bustle of Weston Pier. There were also some lovely pub/restaurants in the area for a tasty lunch. Even Storm Dennis didn't dampen our spirits as the children were always keen to get back to our 'holiday home' and would have been quite happy to stay in all day if we let them! We would love to return one day...hopefully in better weather...to fully experience the outdoor activities that the locality has to offer.

  • "What a fantastic property!"

Beautifully and sympathetically renovated, with a very high level of amenities, finish and attention to detail. We were unlucky in having such a bad week of weather, but the space and comfort of The Retreat meant a day at home was a pleasure (even with 2 young children!). The owners Lucy and John gave a warm welcome and were always on hand if needed. Definitely worth a visit!

  • "This is an exceptional cottage that well exceeded our expectations."

We were a family of 10 (incl. 2 children) staying over Christmas and there was ample space, with lots of different areas to spread out into if you wanted a bit of quiet time! The kitchen/family area was the hub and just a really lovely large space. The cottage was decorated perfectly to ensure we enjoyed Christmas to the fullest; we also thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas Eve nativity at the local church, as well as some local walks. The cottage was kitted out with everything you could need, and all appliances were top spec (a dream kitchen!). The owners live next door and couldn’t be more helpful. Hopefully we will come back to stay again at some point!

Thank you for your comments, we are really pleased you enjoyed your Christmas at The Retreat. Thank you also for raising (in separate correspondence) the slight discrepancy in our “Accuracy of Listing”. This has now been amended to state that three of the four bedrooms are equipped with king-size beds and not double.” Property Owner

  • "The Retreat is a truly impressive, well thought out, newly renovated cottage which is beautifully finished to the highest standards."

The photographs online really do not do the house justice - as a single example it is far more spacious than any of the images suggest. We take my parents ( 91 and 93) on holiday two or three times a year and it is not easy to find holiday homes with a good downstairs bedroom, 5 star hotel quality en-suite with a large low threshold shower and a sitting room with a decent ( 50+ inch 4K) TV with Netflix for them to enjoy at night. If you like to cook on holiday then the kitchen has top of the range Neff ovens and an induction hob while the adjacent dining area is light, comfortable and perfect for entertaining. Extensive off lane parking is a bonus and the setting is quiet while giving easy access to the coast and Wells, Glastonbury and Street etc. And a huge bonus was the welcome, kindness and generosity of spirit from Lucy and John - which in our many years of holiday rental experience is rare. For which, much thanks - it made our holiday. ( As well as the Cava and delicious Apple Cider cake!)

Quality house where the owners,John and Lucy who live next door, have put so much thought and effort into making this a special place to stay. John and Lucy even offered to take us to the pub and pick us up again if we wanted to enjoy a drink and not have to worry about driving. Property is set in a lovely village and ideal for visiting all areas that Somerset has to offer. We were the first visitors to have the pleasure of staying at the retreat. We cannot recommend this property high enough. Fantastic.

Beautiful painted wooden bi-folding doors open out onto the patio area accessing the garden where you can sit out on the garden furniture in summer while the children play on the lawn.

A large utility room also leads off the kitchen.

One of the bedrooms is located on the ground floor, a double room with a large en-suite bathroom containing a bath, separate double shower, basin and WC, making it possible for those needing ground floor living facilities to enjoy a Somerset break with the family as well.

The other three bedrooms are located on the first floor, with the master benefiting from an en-suite shower room, and the other two rooms still home to their original fireplaces, kept as an ornate feature that adds wonderful character to the rooms.

Take at least 30-minutes out of your day and run a hot bath in the stunning freestanding bath in the first floor family bathroom, lose yourself as you gaze out of the window at the rolling hills in the distance, and relax!

Lympsham has its own village shop and post office which is open daily where you can buy your essentials.

This is next to Lympsham Pavillion, which is licensed and open to the public where you can buy a drink while watching a game of cricket in the summer or cheering on the skittle team in the winter.

For a lovely day out and some seaside air, there are plenty of options.
