  • "Location of cottage is fabulous especially if you like walking and it looks very cute looking from the outside."

Small inside. The “garden” is really just a front yard, though nice being by the stream as long as you don’t mind the complete lack of privacy. The second bedroom is minuscule and the door can’t close because of it, the bed being in the way. There is no washing machine or drier. Whole place could do with a deep clean and some redecorating. Owner not particularly helpful. Left a few small items and asked if these could be returned if I paid the postage. He didn’t respond.

The property

This mid-terrace cottage is situated in the woodland valley of Hawkcombe, half a mile from Porlock.

It is much loved accommodation for walkers or anyone looking to explore Exmoor.

Step up to the traditional stable doors into the neat open plan living space with small wood burning stove, TV, kitchen area and folding dining table and chairs.

Head up the wonderful narrow wrought iron spiral stairs to your two cosy bedrooms sharing a bathroom.

At the front, take the little footbridge over a stream to your peaceful enclosed garden where you can enjoy meals at the picnic table.

This is brilliant walking country, with the dramatic coastline and the heather hills of Exmoor to explore, or maybe ride from the local stables or take on some challenging mountain biking.

For shopping and eating, Porlock has a range of shops, restaurants and pubs, Minehead is a fabulous seaside town with all the fun nostalgic resort entertainments you could wish for.

Woodedge is a dear little cottage for enjoying the stunning scenery.

Where you’ll be staying

PORLOCK

Minehead 5.5 miles; Lynton 11 miles.

Porlock is a quaint village, popular with tourists due its character, proximity to the lovely North Somerset coastline and situation within the Exmoor National Park. There are plenty of little gift shops along with pubs, cafes and restaurants to be found and only two miles away, the picturesque harbour of Porlock Weir offers wonderful views across the Bristol Channel. The Porlock Hill takes travelers up a steep, winding road out of the village to the Exmoor Hills, where walkers, horse riders and cyclists will love the open space, where ponies and red deer roam the moors. In 2011, Exmoor was designated as Europe’s first International Dark Skies Reserve, and so this is an excellent base for a romantic evening spent gazing at the stars, where a clear night unveils an abundance of interesting constellations to the naked eye. Porlock offers the choice of sea fishing from the weir, and the reservoirs and rivers of Exmoor are only a short, scenic drive away. Golfers can stay in Porlock and enjoy one of the several courses on the edges of Exmoor, with the nearest only seven miles away. The medieval village of Dunster, where the castle dominates the skyline, makes a great day out, or take a ride on the West Somerset steam train along the coast to the little harbour village of Watchet. A fabulous village location with lots of outdoor pursuits to interest every visitor.
