  • "The cottage is perfectly placed to enjoy all the shops, restaurants and bars in Watchet."

It is very well equipped and comfortable. However, there should be some warning as to just how narrow Esplanade Lane is at its entrance. This is not helped by the concrete blocks placed outside other properties and makes it almost impossible to use in a large car or SUV.

  • "This is my 4th visit to Watchet which I highly recommend."

However, it is my first and last in this house. I'll explain the reasons. From the get go this potentially beautiful house looks tired and unloved inside and out! The greenery outside in the photo is now dead and due for removal due to the damage it causes (explained by the owner Jackie). The balcony off the main bedroom is unsightly and unloved and may even be unsafe! Outside furniture looks old and sad! We must have been the first people staying for months due to the damp smell especially downstairs. No deep cleaning, webs on ceilings. Very damp downstairs double room - no windows to air the room ONLY glass doors. One door only can be kept open on a door chain. Not safe at night esp if any vermin around!! We had very hot weather and had to keep the bedroom door closed to keep the dog out. We also had two big issues (one potentially serious due to gas and no hot water) which were resolved by day 4. Luckily we were staying 14 nights! The WiFi (talk talk) was non existent and despite all efforts (and service call out again on day 4) be warned still remains poor. Suggest change of provider may resolve this! The outside is overgrown, especially the car park area and back gate passage area. The recycle buckets all around the back door will attract vermin. Proper storage recommended for these. Owner Jackie very attentive and apologetic for the gas and WiFi. Spouse Gary attended due to the gas issue and realised it required more than their weak efforts to resolve (day 4 remember!!). Over priced at nearly 3 and half thousand for two weeks. It is my firm opinion this property does not carry the Sykes values and should be removed from their catalogue until they have inspected it.

Spacious and mostly comfortable - beds more than the sitting room furniture!. Some problems - we were there in a very windy and cold moment in February and we found we had to block gaping gaps in distorted window frames with plastic bags. One of our party suffers from asthma and suffered! She found that the pillow (inside numerous slips) was dirty and had evidence of mould - not good. When the kettle burned out on the first evening there was an excellent and immediate response to replace it with a new one - great! Having said all that we would consider staying here again if we returned to Watchet.

  • "We loved our week at 'The Cottage' for several reasons."

The accommodation is as shown and all very clean and tidy. Perhaps one of the twin rooms is more suited to two youngsters and not adults due to it's size. The owner provided us with a generous welcome pack so no need to rush to the shop for supplies. Parking is for two small cars. What is not shown on the web page is the really pretty secluded garden and garden furniture, which we couldn't use due to the continual rain! Within no more than a very short walk are a local Co-Op and several pubs. The Esplanade Bar, a mere half minute walk from the accommodation sells some lovely Somerset cider as does Pebbles. You should try these! Can highly recommend 'The Star' but you need to book for Sunday lunch and choices are limited after the first sitting. The Food is reasonably priced too. The food at the Bell was average. Public transport runs hourly to Minehead or Taunton and all at £2 per trip and bus stop 2 minutes walk from our accommodation. If only we had had sunny weather we could have done a lot more. Overall an enjoyable stay. Would we return for a second visit - yes if someone else did the driving as it was a bit too far for us.

The flooring between dining room and sitting room was lifting, very dangerous. The verandah could have done with clearing all the ivy away and swept. Otherwise it was in a prime position for all amenities, pubs, shops etc

Thank you for your feedback I am sorry that you feel that the bedding was damp but I did the changeover myself and know that this wasnt the case, and was made up an hour before your arrival. There is a sign of damp in one of the corners of the room, which we treat regularly. There is a shower in that room and most people do not use extractor fan which can cause a damp feeling We were unaware that the floor was lifting until you mentioned it but this has now been fixed Thank you again for your feedback Property Owner

  • "A property with potential that was over promised and under maintained."

The situation in the town was good although the parking was tight and difficult to enter due to a disabled parking bay opposite. The outside furniture was not well maintained and insufficient for the number of guests that the property could hold (8). The first floor balcony had a good view but was spoil due to a lack of maintenance and cleaning. It was covered with moss and there was no outside furniture provided for the area. From the lack of electric sockets and the positioning of the few that there were it suggested that the electrics could do with an upgrade.

Thank you for your feedback. We've noted your comments. There is adequate seating for 8 guests outside, with 5 chairs and a bench that comfortably sits 3 people. We've also alerted our cleaners about the balcony issue. Apologies for the lack of sockets, this is due to the property age and we have not had previous issues regarding this. Property Owner

The upstairs bedroom balcony is a bonus - especially as you can see the steam train pass right by the cottage. Very good communication with Jackie beforehand, so the key collection was easy. The cottage was great for us as a mixed group of adults and children. Beds - very comfortable, + warm bedding, plenty of comfortable seating, well-equipped kitchen, excellent bath and showers (+ very clean) The only negatives were minor things - the lighting in the cottage was not great - it was not easy to read in the living room, and there were no bedside lights in the big bedroom upstairs. The kettle was a bit 'glitschy' - had to turn it to just the right spot on the base or it wouldn't come on.

The windows need cleaning. The garden needs some attention & you would certainly not eat of the rusty table outside. The heating was supposed to come on twice a day it never happened, & the first week was cold for july, the property owner was informed & we were told it had been sorted ,but it hadnt & there is no possibility of accessing the heating yourself as &when you might need it even though you are paying for it! luckily the weather got warmer the second week. There is a terrible, terrible smell in the down stairs en suite & no window you can open to let fresh air in. Although it says harbour view, this is only the case if you want to stand upstairs & look through the top of the window. The upstairs bedroom balcony would be a lovely space if it was cleaned up ,the bedroom itself is lovely, as are the twin rooms. the cottage is very spacious & with some time spent on these issues it would be a lovely place to stay.

Both of the upstairs toilets did not flush properly but as there were two other toilets we made do. There were no lids on the recycling bins which meant we could not put out our cardboard recycling due to the weather, this is why we marked down the facilities. Also the cutlery could do with an upgrade as there is barely enough there for 6 people. And finally the standard and size of the towels could be improved, one small towel per person is inadequate. None of this particularly serious and due the relatively cheap cost of the cottage we would come back (providing the toilets had been sorted). Watchet as an area is a great place to visit with lots of nice places to eat and drink, in particular the Cats Whiskers - a tapas bar with some of the best food I have ever eaten and the lovely warmth of the host.

Mrs Holt was very friendly and very helpful. The cottage itself was very nice and comfortable, the garden was properly secure and we were quite comfortable letting our dog run around in it because we could see it was safe for him. It was delightful to be able to go out on the balcony and look over the harbour and even see the trains coming into Watchet station, it would be nice if there was a small table and chairs on the balcony. The only bad points were the bathrooms which are in desperate need of updating, the small shower room is OK but the two bathrooms are very old and shabby. It wasn't suitable for a disabled person as it was a bath not a shower plus I tripped down the step into bedroom.I was unable to use the room and had to climb the stairs. • "The house was excellently positioned and as such we enjoyed our holiday."

The house was clean and presentable but is in dire need of maintenance throughout and new bathrooms, not a 4 tick standard at all, possibly 3. We had excellent weather so we were out of the house a lot of the time and with 7 adults, varying in age from 80's to 20's the space available was adequate. However, with our family group consisting of people from The Midlands, Scotland and Spain it was not the ideal introduction to UK holidaying. Maybe the owners need to spend a week there themselves? To name of few of the issues; the bedroom downstairs is down a step from the main level with the only shower over the bath, hardly a room for those who have issues with stairs. The towel rail comes away from the wall when used in the family bathroom upstairs and the bath has the iron showing through the enamel in places and needs to be replaced along with the toilet cistern which is cracked. The cistern in the communal toilet downstairs is a different colour to the toilet itself and has a hole in the inside of the door. The dishwasher tray falls out of its runner every time it is used, even after putting it back together.

Some of the cooking equipment needs replacing as it very old and I would have thrown it out years ago. The Cottage in places needs a bit more of a clean. The pull out sofa is on the landing and blocks the exit from the two bedrooms and we felt very uneasy using this bed in case of a fire, I'm unsure if this should be allowed because of the blocking of the exit. We took the mattress off and put it on the floor in the main bedroom and one of the children slept on the sofa downstairs. As we were all adults we needed 5 sleeping areas, so were pleased to see the second sitting room described as providing the 5th sleeping area we needed, it seemed perfect for our needs. "For extra space and convenience, there is a second sitting room upstairs with a double sofa bed and views out to sea" We were therefore very surprised and a little dismayed to find that, in order to access the twin bedrooms you had to go through this second sitting room which, when the sofa bed was deployed as a bed ,involved actually climbing over the bed and the person in it. We moved the bed to the side but ,whilst this gave some access, meant you could not use the wardrobe or shut the door. To fully inform possible guests you really should make clear in your details that this convenient second sitting room/ bedroom is actually the access route to where 4 other adults may be sleeping. It is not a discreet room . It may work for families with small children; however our youngest family member was a 31 year old woman who did not appreciate the idea of her 72 year old uncle having to climb over her bed to get to his morning coffee and he, unsurprisingly, was not comfortable with the idea either! If there had been a need to evacuate the property this would also have been an issue. Circumstance and compromise allowed us to get over the issue, we were determined not to let it spoil the break. We would, however, not have booked this cottage had we realised the situation. Also taking into account the fact the dining table is very tight for 10 and there is only comfortable seating for 8 in the living room, it would be fairer on the guests and owner to look again at how you market this property . I contacted you last January with this feedback, it is disappointing to see that the description remains unchanged and could lead to other groups experiencing this problem, hence this belated review.

The Cottage was located at the end of a lane which was a minute walk from the harbour at Watchet, the cafes, pubs, local shops and the supermarket were only a few minutes walk from the cottage, which was extremely useful. The children in our party loved being on the beach and found many fossils and the play park was only a short walk away. The cottage was furnished very comfortably and the children and adults were all able to relax in their own space without being in each others pockets, yet able to enjoy each others company when wanted. Jackie and Gary certainly made us welcome. We would definitely use this cottage again.
