  • "We really enjoyed our stay at the Railway Carriage."

We wanted ssomething different to staying in regular holiday accomodation, and this was perfect. The view was great. Getting up to the sight of the sea was lovely. The log fire was esy to get to grips with, and was a good warmth provider as we were staying in November. As for the bath ... it was pure bliss.

Thank you for your lovely review. We are so glad that you enjoyed your holiday - and enjoyed the bath! Property Owner

... mind your head. Apart from that, faultless. There is a house being built next door but it really didnt bother us at all.

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday. The carriage dates from 1907 and has been on the cliff since the 1930s. Of course, people are rather taller today. Property Owner

  • "Lovely unique place to stay, cosy with the stove fire place."

Spectacular view across bay from all rooms. All facilities provided. My only nag is the building work next door (which is not listed on the advert), which I know are outside of the owners control. Building work started quite early at 8:30 and lots of drilling and sawing. Also, work van parking restricted the room to move the car through the gate.

We are sorry that you were affected by the building work nearby. Thank goodness it is nearly complete and hope you will return to enjoy a really peaceful holiday. Property Owner

  • "Such a charming railway carriage that couldn’t be no closer to the cliffs edge."

Views were outstanding. The coast path is close by and although we didn’t see any seals or dolphins from the carriage we did see seals from the path. The balcony area is private and we enjoyed sitting outside even in October. One thing to note is the driveway was very tight and we just about got our Kuga through the gate to the parking space for our car. There is also a new house being built right next door. Whilst we were there there was no noise from the site. The carriage is tastefully furnished and had everything you needed to prepare a meal. The bed and furnishings were comfortable and internet was good. It was clean but some utensils needed re washing and the bins had bin juice at the bottom. The shower was warm and had a good output. It’s certainly one of the more private carriages in the area. Aberporth is a lovely place to stay and everyone we encountered was so helpful and friendly.

Thank you for your review. The carriage is certainly a holiday with a difference and Aberporth has delightful beaches with lots of nearby facilities. We’re sorry that the washing of utensils fell short of our normal standards on this occasion - we must redouble our attention to detail. Property Owner

Wonderful quirky accomm with everything you could want. Satellite TV went off each evening due to signal issues but I’m not much of a TV watcher anyway! Views from the carriage were beautiful. Sitting on the sundeck watching sunsets and stargazing, and seeing the sunrise without having to get out of bed were amazing!

Dolphins were seen every day on one day they were so close to the cliffs you could hear them breathing when they came up for air -amazing. Kitchen very well stocked with every item you needed. Took a bit of a while to get used to the carriage size.

The carriage was built in 1907 - it is 50ft long but the corridor is quite narrow if you have a suitcase. We hope you will return to enjoy the dolphins again. Property Owner

The location is fantastic, we saw dolphins on multiple occasions and really close in at times. Really should be a 5* property, it is well appointed with everything you need but the decor is a little tired in places. It was generally very clean but some of the less accessible areas could do with spring clean. Aberporth is a relatively quiet village, there’s a well stocked local stores a short walk away which was great. Recommend the walk to Tresaith, try and go at low tide to access the waterfall and enjoy a drink or meal in the pub.

The kitchen had everything that you would need for cooking, from utensils to cookware, crockery and cutlery. It was good to have Sky provided and also a full size fridge freezer. However we feel that the paint work is now getting tired and needs refreshing. Also the sofa has seen better days and was very uncomfortable. Having said all that, the bed was very comfy and it was lovely to wake up to such an amazing view every morning.

We are pleased that you enjoyed the location and the facilities but are sorry that you found the sofa uncomfortable. It is being replaced and we hope you will return to test it out. Property Owner

The only fault we felt, was that it would benefit from a new sofa. The present one is very low and there is no support in the seat cushions. Easy to remedy. Superb walks from the carriage with a very easy cliff top path to Tresaith. Loved the holiday and will not hesitate to recommend to friends.

  • "Unique experience in the converted carriage."

Lovely privacy and just what was expected. Just a couple of minor issues where I would class this as a romantic accommodation for two so I felt it was under specced in terms of equipment. I never understand why people do not stock nice glassware as it adds to the experience so to not find champagne flutes and the only other wine glasses were those your find from a 70s pub experience (with one sip and it's gone and rims like jam jars) was disappointing. Other kitchen tools were not what I would expect in quality either. The log burner in winter is a must and lovely but with the confines space every time you opened the door to place a log in you did have to vent the carriage a bit afterwards because of fumes. However, that being said we had a nice week in a lovely area with amazing views. Comfy bed, good hot water supply.

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted that you had a nice week in a lovely area and felt this was romantic accommodation and a unique experience. We recognise that glassware is an issue when so many of our guests enjoy dining and celebrating while enjoying the amazing views on the deck outside. Of course, outside dining may not be possible in February, but we have found from experience that the majority of guests prefer to be able to relax with relatively resilient glassware that survives both gusts of wind on the deck and the ease of a dishwasher. The log burner is certainly very effective. Feedback is always helpful and we will change our guidance to suggest that guests turn off the draught before opening the log burner to add further logs. The only two things that didn’t come up to the wonderful standard were the convector heater (it does not work, may be just a fuse?) and there is a problem with a constant power output ( sometimes the plug sockets would not even power an iPad/iPhone charger and or the bathroom cabinet lights but be ok at other times???). These things did not spoil or detract any part of our holiday. It would be a pleasure to return another time. Thank you and a Happy New Year 2023 to all.

Thank you for your review. We are thrilled that you enjoyed your holiday in Clifftop Carriage. We have checked the electric sockets and all seems well now, so this remains a mystery. It exceeded our expectations in every way - a perfect bolthole for a relaxing break for 2 people. The carriage is very well equipped with everything you need and quality fixtures and fittings throughout. A particular mention for a very comfortable king size bed and bedding - we slept so well. The combination of underfloor heating and the log burner works well and keeps the carriage cosy. The location is perfect with sea views from every window on one side of the carriage and decking and furniture for the sunny days. On the other side is off-road, secure parking right next to the carriage. It all feels very private and safe behind electrically operated security gates. Beyond the gate you are a stones throw from Aberporth beach or going the other way, you are similarly close to the clifftop path to Tresaith where The Ship Inn is recommended. We had one minor issue on arrival which the owner was quick to resolve with clear communication throughout. Overall, it’s clear that the owner takes pride in providing a really lovely place to stay. • "The view as we walked around to enter the carriage took our breath away and as we opened the door, stood on the mat and surveyed the carriage, just knew our choice of accommodation was first class."

Never have we immediately felt so at home. The carriage shone with cleanliness and the facilities were superb. The owners clearly take a deep pride in caring for the carriage and provide quality furnishings, from the comfortable bed with The White Company bedding to some Le Creuset pottery. There was a more than ample selection of cleaning materials/liquids etc, but we had the impression the owners did not need covid regs to tell them to ensure a clean environment be maintained. The privacy and solitude of the environment were restorative - there should be a warning sign that visitors will sleep like logs and awake to the sound and sight of the waves making it quite a struggle to get out of bed! But as we stayed in November, just had to get up and light the log fire - truly lovely. By way of recommendation, the owners may wish to be aware that the sofa has now passed its sell-by date - the cushions sink in the middle, have no support and slide forward during use, rendering it rather uncomfortable after a short while. However, we are confident it is on their radar considering how well maintained the property is. We also had the errmmm priviledge of staying as Storm Arwen hit on our final night - quite an experience as the carriage rocked in the gusts of 80mph wind (not for the feint hearted!). The storm upturned the patio furniture - we managed to retrieve the chairs but the table was stuck against the door with just enough room for us to exit but that at least did prevent the door from being ripped away in this most extraordinary weather. However, if we are honest, it would have been courteous to have at least had a text from either Sykes or the owners to ensure we were okay bearing in mind the cliff edge location. We did consider leaving early as news reporters advised keeping away from the coasts but decided it was safer to stay given the driving conditions and fallen trees on the roads. Nevertheless, we were planning a return stay even before our holiday ended. In fact, I think we'd like to live there!!

Thank you for such detailed feedback. It is a delight to hear that guests have enjoyed their holidays and suggestions are always welcome. During the January maintenance closure new window blinds have been fitted and a new sofa is on the way.I hope you will be able to come back quite soon to test it out. Property Owner

Not nearly as nice as when we stayed before. The bathroom is particularly in need of updating. There was black mould in the shower and in the roof of the bathroom. The toilet seat was discoloured. The toilet brush was most unpleasant. The mirror was worn. The sink didn't drain properly and the plug didn't seal. The rest of the carriage's fixtures and fittings were all a bit worn and tired. The location and the view from the carriage is spectacular and we enjoyed our holiday.

Thank you for alerting us to these issues. It is always helpful to hear from guests and we value your feedback. The carriage was repainted inside and outside earlier this year and the dining chairs re-covered. The carriage is very popular and we are engaged in a constant process of refurbishment. Unfortunately, some visitors do not use the extractor fan in the bathroom and this causes a level of humidity that can affect decorated surfaces and we will put these right. The new toilet brush had al-ready been bought and this was an oversight for which I apologise. Issues like the plug and slow drainage only really come to light when we are alerted and will be rectified. We hope you will return rather sooner than in six years’ time and find everything much more to your satisfaction. Property Owner

This was our third stay in the Cliff Top carriage and though the setting still has a wow factor, we have come away this time not so impressed and would pick up on a couple of points that detracted from our experience; (1) the underfloor heating is not working in either the living room or bedroom (2) unlike previous stays we were not able to have a long shower & then fill the bath without using up all the hot water - this hadn't been a problem on previous stays (3) appreciate incredibly finickity but the sight of previous guests discarded table flowers straight onto the grass area beyond the decking was a little shabby considering the cost of the stay Above will mean that we probably won't book again for 2022 & will now look elsewhere for a cottage stay

Thank you for alerting me to the issues you have raised. There are two immersion heaters for the hot water supply and it sounds as if something has triggered the cut-out on one thermostat, causing the shortage of hot water. If you had let us know at the time, I'm sure it could have been quickly resolved by pressing the reset button. The electric underfloor heating is turned off during the summer and I apologise if you had difficulty in turning it back on. The flowers were probably discarded by an earlier visitor and I am sorry that they were not noticed. We will be alert for this in future. The cleanliness overall wasn't overly great, having filthy windows & cobwebs in many places. The car standing could also have been nearer the property as there is quite a walk from the parking area, more so when unloading/loading the car in the rain. The light switches were confusing, perhaps being labelled as to which light the switch operated would help. Why, if the property was for two people sleeping, was there a dining table with 4 chairs, this took up unnecessary room. Advertising sky tv was a bit of a con when there is nothing but freeview channels available, I didnt see the point in that. The view everyday is priceless, along with the comfortable outdoor seating, the highlight of a mixed weather week. The bedroom window is very draughty even when closed. All in all, a very comfortable 6 nights, came home a day early due to the early departure time.

The property

This Edwardian railway carriage, on its clifftop site in Aberporth, really has the wow factor!

It has been converted into stunning accommodation full of original charm, while hitting all the right notes on style and comfort.

The main rooms all have wonderful views over the sea.

On a clear day you can see as far away as North Wales. There are regular sightings of resident bottlenose dolphins and seals from the carriage.

It is also a great bird watching site, with oyster catchers, gannets, cormorants and kittiwakes, as well as kestrels and red kites, to be seen, so you may not want to venture out at all during your stay.

Aberporth is a small town that sits on the southern edge of Cardigan Bay in Ceredigion, renowned for it's fabulous beaches that attract visitors, all year round. There are two beaches that sit between the rocky headlands of Trecregyn and Fathgarreg, separated by a smaller rocky outcrop. Uniquely, at low tide they interlink, but at high tide, they create individual beaches and create great rock pools for the children to play in and explore. Small boats, canoes, and kayaks can easily be launched from the north beach, while the south beach lends itself beautifully for a spot of sunbathing. Close to the beaches, there is a small seaside café, fish and chip shop, and a friendly pub serving good food and drinks. In the village itself, there is a range of shops and takeaway stores. Nestled directly on the famous Wales Coast Path, between the towns of Cardigan in the south, and Llangrannog and New Quay to the north, it is a great base for exploring this glorious stretch of coastline. Venture to Cardigan and discover the town’s many shops, tea rooms, restaurants, pubs, and bustling markets. Visit the nearby themed farm park, spot dolphins from the coastal path, or take a boat trip for the chance to see them up close! Aberporth is a great base for exploring this wonderful part of West Wales, with something to do for all the family.
