  • "This little cottage is delightful, we were warm, dry ( goodness it rained) and comfortable."

I have only 2 nit picks.. The garden attached to Granary Cottage could be made dog proof, it was very easy for our dog to dive under the fence so we were ultra vigilant. It wouldn't take much to make it a secure place. Secondly the mattress on the bed was awful! Maybe consider a new one.. But these two ( minor) issues apart, the cottage was lovely, comfortable and warm Thank you.

Thank you for your feedback. It always helps me to improve the place. I particularly appreciated your balanced views on your stay. Yes, did it rain?! With reference to your 2 "nit picks," to enclose the garden as most people understand the use of that word (including myself) would actually take a lot. Getting under the fence by the road wouldn't be too difficult but in order for me to make the garden "secure" and stop big dogs jumping over the stone wall into my garden (where the log cabin is) would not only be costly and possibly unsightly for both gardens but take away my own view. Larger dogs have and do jump over the wall. I don't actually mind to be honest. I do mind that Sykes call it an enclosed garden. I feel sure they could find other words to explain what they mean. I have asked more than once. Until then sadly, I am the one who always receives the complaints....not Sykes! Your 2nd point about the mattress being "awful" doesn't really tell me much at all. I would need further clarification. I have to say most people have told me what a really comfortable bed it is. I have a topper on it which I know makes it feel "softer" for some. That can easily be removed if another guest asks in future. I don't have plans to buy a new mattress, it's not really that old. But when I do, what kind do I buy...a soft one, harder, hard? I'll never make everyone happy, I do know that. I'll end by hoping Sykes are able to change the wording for "enclosed" and thank you once again for bringing this to my attention...and Sykes. • "We loved staying in the Granary Cottage."

It was comfortable, super quiet, chill and had amazing views. The 20 minute walk to the secluded (on some days to ourselves) sandy beach was more of a scramble (read, I climbed back up bare foot as didn't have great shoes for it) that a plain walk, but it was worth it! Mandy, our host, was very friendly and helpful. Our doggo Charlie had a wonderful time too, he/we didn't want to leave!

  • "The cottage is not fit to stay in it smelt strongly of damp with black mould on all the walls in bedroom and living room the cushions and duvet was damp, there was mould in the shower and on the rubber of freezer door also."

We never even unpacked the smell was overpowering. There is no welcome pack or directions to nearest shop (15min drive down lanes garage shop) a bottle of proseco in fridge milk would have been more appreciated. The garden is not enclosed or secure for any size dog. The cottage itself is located at the end of unmarked lanes , more accurate directions should be available. We have used sykes cottages for many years and 3times a year and we have never had such an experience do not want to experience it again. After several phone calls have manage to get a full refund

I am keen to respond to this feedback which was posted after their stay in the Granary cottage on the 19th July. I am certainly able to hold my hand up to some of the comments which I will address. I said goodbye to guests the same day the couple in question arrived. They had loved the cottage, had spent a fabulous week and are going to book for next year. The cottage has been prone to mould since we began (as is our own farmhouse and many other properties in this part of Wales). We try to keep it ventilated as much as possible as well as warm. The cushions on the dining chairs weren't actually damp after speaking to 2 people who know a lot about upholstery....and had felt them. They are waxed meaning they are suitable for indoors and out. The sofa cushions were dry. I wish I had felt the duvet when the couple mentioned it. It wasn't damp at all. My own house cleaner had made the bed earlier in the afternoon and is particularly fussy and sensitive about damp, she would never have made up the bed with damp bedding even if I'd paid her double! The bed was not damp at all when I examined it. My explanation of that as a professional hypnotherapist is once someone has planted a seed in their mind about something, especially a negative one, it spreads i.e. "the place is damp, the bed is bound to be." The drive to the local shop is 7 or 8 minutes, not the 15 minutes mentioned and the "garage shop" to which they refer happens to be an award winning Londis shop in the whole of the UK which many locals choose to frequent despite it being pricier than the large stores. I chose Prosecco as a welcome drink assuming people would bring their preferred milk. There are a huge variety of milks on the market and with all the news surrounding allergies, I have chosen to keep things simple. Directions can now be put in my welcome email about the locality of the nearest shop. Thank you for pointing that out. Yes, there are many "unmarked lanes" as was pointed out. That would need to be taken that up with the Local Authorities. Our own directions from the main road, many have commented, are excellent. Directions are sent to all the guests in an email and we have signposts in the hedge almost from the main road. My handyman discovered a large crack in a window above the granary cottage blocked up with hard plastic. He feels sure this is how the damp had come in and with all the rain we have had, it doesn't surprise me the cottage was damp. I must apologise for not spotting this sooner. I have no excuses at all for that error. The window was sorted by the following day, sealed in and it is now bone dry upstairs. The whole cottage has now also been painted. I was unfortunately not there at the time these guests arrived, something I aim to avoid on changeover day. Not only that, my cleaner (who had not been pulling her weight for several weeks) "threw an absolute wobbly" is the politest way to describe it and had hardly cleaned at all that day. That certainly did not help matters. Any mould present would have been cleaned off. We now have a new cleaner who is fabulous. As far the comment, "the garden is not enclosed or secure for any size dog," may I point out to anyone reading this that they refer to Sykes' definition of "enclosed." I know that a dog can leave the garden anytime it wants through the post and rail fence but all 3 sides of the small paddock are enclosed for the Granary guests' use only. Sykes do not use the word "secure" in any of its advertising. The lady concerned had a serious health condition which was greatly exacerbated by damp conditions. The couple said they had a criteria list which they used when searching for a rental cottage. May I point out respectfully and kindly that putting an old farmhouse prone to damp in wet weather be now put to the top of their list. The comments used i.e. "the smell was overpowering" may well have been true I'm sure for someone suffering with a mould allergy. Myself, the handyman and guests the week before were unaffected. I understand they have now been given a full refund. May I point out, the "several phone calls" to which they refer, were made to Sykes. My personal promise before they left was to give a full refund and this promise, I subsequently kept. This is my first communication with them. I too have had an excellent relationship with Sykes for 12 years and although this was an unfortunate situation, it has now been rectified. I am able to offer my personal apology to this couple now. I am positive as with anyone booking their holiday, that you were deeply saddened driving home. It would be absolutely true to say that as I lay in bed that night, I felt genuinely sad too. I felt under the circumstances, we left each other on good terms. Thank you to any potential guest for reading this long response. Please be assured that the situation has now been rectified and since these particular guests' visit, others staying in the Granary cottage have been very happy. Property Owner

Warm , dry and cleaned to a high standard. Mandy was warm and welcoming, the perfect host Only 1 bit of feedback with regards to the parking . The carpark is too far when the weather is poor ..we found we had to drive as near to the cottage as possible, to keep the dogs from not getting too much mud on their paws , bringing it into the cottage. There is a space near the steps , that perhaps could be made a little larger, to have 1 car park bay. This would not effect the opening of the field gate , the public access or the carers parking , when they visit ' mum's room'.
