  • "A beautiful cottage - secluded yet near to amenities."

We didn't use the enclosed garden for the two dogs as the ground was waterlogged and we didn't want it to end up as a mud bath ! We were very comfortable staying here, and hope to pay a return visit. Would highly recommend this venue

  • "The property is a bit tired, but I expected that, although the collection of and sometimes mouldy and dusty ‘decorative’ objects detract from the decor rather than enhance, as do the random clothing and detritus found in drawers."

We found crumbs in the grill pan and we definitely left the tins and pans in a better state than we found them. We found lots of random food, nearly empty jars etc in pantry cupboard so removed them to the top shelf. The kitchen sink was very off-putting and needs replacing and I would suggest the purchase of some decent pillows! The downstairs bedroom is ok for children but definitely not big enough for two adults to share. We thoroughly enjoyed Newport and the property is well placed but the interior could be so much better with more thought. Access was tricky and one of our party was nearly mown down by a van on the narrow road, so children need close supervision once outside the boundary. All in all I would recommend for a family but don’t expect luxury and you won’t be disappointed.

  • "The property was in a pleasant secluded location above the town, and the accommodation was comfortable with features such as exposed beams, old chests of drawers, books stacked on window bottoms, and a large collection of games and jigsaws in the lounge area."

A downstairs bedroom drawer had a hair curling set taking up space which seemed odd! There were two issues worth mentioning. Early in the week the shower unit on the upper floor started leaking. We reported it to the Coast & Country Holidays office in Newport and they arranged for a plumber to come while we were out. We received no feedback from the office about this visit, or whether it had actually taken place – there’s no phone signal in the town (but WhatsApp could have been used). We observed that water was draining very slowly from the shower, indicating a partial blockage, so we avoided further leaks by using water sparingly. Before leaving we conveyed this information to the Coast & Country office. The other issue concerned the house instructions for rubbish and re-cycling. The instructions in the ring binder folder to take rubbish up Mill Lane were out of date, and nothing was said about disposing of the re-cycling, though four kitchen bins were provided for paper, cardboard, cans and bottles. Apparently these would be removed by the cleaners / staff servicing the property, so we discovered on the final morning, but the lack of information was a cause for concern. The office staff promised to get the instructions updated for future guests.

  • "Castle coach house is so lovely, beautifully finished with lots of space and light."

There is a great utility / boot room which helps keep all the mud out of the main house. The bedrooms upstairs have great proportions and yet feel very cosy, plenty of bathrooms! The open plan kitchen, dining and living space gives everyone the space they need. Sofas and chairs are comfortable. The different lighting options helps to make the mood right in the evening. Lots of classic furniture and trinkets to keep it feeling homely and interesting. The kitchen is well equipped. There are lots of games to be used. We absolutely loved the house. Couple of things to work on: maintenance of the washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, extractor fans etc is probably due. The sitting room area could do with a picture or two or a wooden dresser with the tv inside a cabinet, and get rid of the fender which takes up space and looks a bit odd. The enclosed garden wasn’t enclosed as the gate is broken. It’s also unfortunately a muddy bog which may be tricky to figure out as it’s at the bottom of a hill. I felt a bit sad being right next to lovely garden areas of the castle which have private signs on them all so you can’t use them.

  • "I was disappointed that the property had not been cleaned prior to our arrival and was not to the same standard of other holiday properties I have rented and expected."

There were cleaning products available, so I started my holiday cleaning the bathrooms! Unfortunately there was no vacuum cleaner or broom available to sweep the floors. Important when the property allows dogs to stay and it is expected to leave the property in the same state as arrival . I reported this the next morning at the local office. Unfortunately, no vacuum arrived during our stay, as was organised. It would be helpful to have more information in the 'useful information' folder on recycling/rubbish and how to leave the property on departure. The property did have a lot of extraneous objects, papers, letters etc., cluttering up the window shelves and drawers of furniture. This is a lovely property and we enjoyed our stay. It just needs a good sort through, removing unnecessary items and make sure the essentials are cleaned prior to clients arriving.

  • "Excellent. Although advertised in the welcome guide, the only thing they didn't provide was kindling, fire lighters and matches for the first night's fire."
