"What a gem."
Really thoughtful hosts. Well equipped and extremely comfortable. Many walks from the door. Safe dog garden. Magic sandy coast at Pembrey. Welcoming dog friendly pubs and a very friendly community. One of the very best we have visited and there have been a lot! Thank you Christine and Mike for your warm and generous hospitality. Our Bumble loved your magnificently handsome Hank. "EXCELLENT STAY."
-
"Fabulous cottage which was so comfortable."
Mike and his wife had thought of everything we might need, and more! Even a box of treats for the dog! Mike popped in to say hello, and although he lived next door, he did not intrude at all. We felt very at home. I would thoroughly recommend this cottage and will definitely be returning! Kidwelly is a lovely town. The castle is amazing! Within 15-20 mins drive there are fabulous beaches and a country park. Thanks to the owners for helping us have such a wonderful weekend.

"A wonderful week at Castle School House."
A spacious and well equipped cottage with a lovely welcome pack, not just for us but the dogs too! Set in the quiet village of Kidwelly with a variety of local walks and the beautiful Kidwelly Castle on your doorstep. Would highly recommend Castle School House if you're looking for a relaxing home from home, set in a lovely village location with lots tk explore on your doorstep.

"We (a family with two teenage kids) spent 12 wonderful days at the Castle School House in July 2024."
Within the picturesque village of Kidwelly it is situated in walking distance between the castle ruin and its former castle gate. The spacious cottage with three lovely bedrooms gave us a lot of room for recreation. The interior has its very own nostalgic charm, yet the place also offers any convenience we could ever dream off. The living room where you find several comfortable seats and sofas is large and cosy and also has a big-size flat screen TV where we enjoyed watching British films and series in the evening (every now and then we also made use of the impressive dvd collection). The big kitchen is extremely well-equipped for a holiday cottage and includes everything you need for extended breakfasts and home-made lunches or dinners, which we liked to have in the comfortable and atmospheric dining room. Alternatively, we could also have used the secluded terrace which also enables you to relax in privacy. On arrival we were surprised to discover that our hosts had provided us with an initial supply of biscuits, tea, coffee, chips, chocolate and even milk so that we felt very welcome and could start relaxing right from the very first minute. A big thanks for that to Christine and Mike. Mike also dropped in personally to make sure we had everything we needed. Living next doors, he was always approachable in a very forthcoming and discreet way. Our absolute favourite in this cottage was the bathroom, which not only offers lots of space as well, but also has state of the art sanitary facilities. While already the shower was far above the average holiday cottage standard (always cold and warm water available and a perfect water pressure!), there was even a bath tub which we enjoyed using after our long sightseeing tours to interesting towns and cities in South West Wales. We will always enjoy to remember this holiday in an absolutely lovely house.

"This is a well presented, beautifully decorated, spacious and spotlessly clean property."
It has everything you need for a relaxing break with your family and maybe your dog. Unfortunately our holiday was cut short due to a medical emergency for one of our party but the owners Mike and Christine were absolutely tremendous in every way. We would highly recommend a stay in this fantastic property in a beautiful part of the country.
-
"We were blown away by everything that was provided at Castle School House and our hosts were very friendly and helpful."
The house was generously proportioned, the furniiture (including the beds) was very comfortable and the welcome package was comprehensive - even including some treats for our four-legged friend! We would highly recommend this property to our friends and family and would visit again, without hesitation, if we wanted to be in that area.
-
"Just returned from a 4 night at break at castle school house."
The property was as described and more couldn’t fault it. It had everything you need, and a lovely surprise welcome pack. Dog friendly too… The owners Christine and Mike popped in to check we had everything we needed. They were friendly and very accommodating which added to our lovely stay. Would visit again and wholeheartedly recommend tthe cottage to others too. The setting was just what we wanted , peaceful, with plenty of walks for us and the dog and coast nearby.Lovely Wales!

"We had a lovely relaxing stay at castle school house."
It felt very homely. The welcome basket was a lovely touch and very much appreciated. the location is perfect for travelling to some stunning beaches but equally you have the castle and the nature reserve to explore right on your doorstep. Thank you for a great stay!

"Excellent cottage."
The owners go above and beyond to make your stay comfortable provide an excellent welcome pack. The cottage is cosy and well equipped and would recommend

"We had a wonderful family holiday in Kidwelly School House."
The house is very comfortable, spacious, so sympathetically perfect for relaxation and slowing down. We enjoyed cooking in the very well equipped kitchen, dining in the separate dining room which can be warmly lit for lovely dinners as well as being a bright morning room looking out into the garden. The lounge is large, comfy and full of interest - we had some great family evenings in our chosen seats for the week! Again the lighting is super. We loved the bathroom, so much space and light. Each of us enjoyed our respective bedrooms which are decorated with wallpapers and traditional furnishings. It’s just a lovely place to be. The village is a great base to explore from, the castle is ever present over the river and bridge which lead to the high street. We already look forward to returning and highly recommend.

"Nice comfortable house"
-
"The cottage was perfect and had everything that was needed with plenty of room for everything needed was great to do walks beside the river and castle with our two dogs and very near to go to the shops and pub."
The owners came to see us at check in and tell us whats needed and few ideas on were to go and what was available. Beach was only 15 mins drive away and dogs loved that as did we. All in all this si perfect location to base yourself for a visit to this area and we would happily return again.
-
"Perfect base to explore the area."
Very spacious and well equipped cottage. The hosts are very friendly and helpful. Hope to go back to the place again.Thoroughly recommend.
-
"Overall very comfortable and enjoyable stay."
Development points to make better as follows: Master bedroom had superior mattres (possibly memory foam) compared to others Would be better if all had this. Sykes needs to update their website to show third bedroom as it doesn't do the property justice. Having 1 x key for 6 x residents isn't always practical, we always left key in the safe holder. Kitchen bin was a bit small especially for 6 x residents. More coat hooks would be great especially on rainy days. Having the jack and Jill toilet upstairs is a positive but third bedroom is without which was a bit awkward when sharing Kitchen door does not lock properly Windows in sitting room were often difficult to open and close Taller and bigger fridge would help loads with large family and also those with bad backs and knees Having a fan or 2 on request would be beneficial especially during summer Please don't interpret above as a rant, the stay was great and would come again, just a believer in continual enhancement
-
"The property is beautiful, immaculate and clean inside and well presented on the outside."
If you are looking for a location close to amenities and local sights I’d recommend Castle School House. The beach at Burry Port was fabulous for our dogs to explore and have fun in the sea, the castle was fantastic and our hosts were very friendly.
-
"Pleasant and comfortable property would highly recommend"
-
"An absolutely beautiful property."
We were made to feel so welcome! House was spotless and felt like a real home from home. Lots of little personal touches like the wine and Welsh cakes. Even some doggy treats and special bowls laid out for our dog! Thank you, we will definitely be returning!
-
"We just love it a fabulous place to stay the owners have got something to be ..."

"Well what can I add to all the other 5star reviews."
Everything was perfect..location, comfort, beautiful river walks from the property and superb welcome pack from Chris and Mike. Of course the beautiful weather was the icing on the cake and we made lots of use of the secluded sheltered little courtyard for some alfresco dining! Would highly recommend.
-
"The cottage was fantastic with everything you could require for an comfortable stay."
The little touches done by the hosts were lovely and made us feel extremely welcome. The cottage is set in lo Ely gardens on a quiet street with local amenities within walking distance. A lovely, relaxing break

"Our second stay at a beautiful home, in a lovely location."
Amazing weather (obvs out of owner's control) no doubt added to the positive experience however Castle School House is simply one of the best we have stayed in. Roomy, very well equipped & furnished, with a lovely secure courtyard for dog. Local walks and area is perfect for those who want a gentle, but active, holiday on the doorstep plus more locations to explore within very short drive (pembrey, llansteffan). Castle literally within 2 mins walk is a bonus (if member of Cadw or English Heritage even better with free entry). Convenience store within 2 minutes stroll, a larger supermarket a couple of minutes drive away although much larger/more selection are also within 15-30 mins drive. Town is very quiet - plenty of takeways, bar, pubs and friendly rugby club. Cottage itself is visually gorgeous, steeped in history and again we enjoyed reading the book detailing the school itself. All appliances easy to use, good quality and sufficient. Welcome pack (incl dog treats) very much appreciated - esp the local soap/and welcome card. Plenty of dvds for grandson to enjoy but the weather was on our side so local walks and area kept him occupied and tired for bed. Dog in particular really enjoys the stay - local walks are good for an older dog who loves some activity on the doorstep. The river walks are great. Locals all friendly and helpful, although the area was so peaceful and quiet we didn't feel surrounded by others. Home owner popped by to check we were happy/no issues but apart from that left us totally to ourselves. Really clear communication before setting off. As mentioned the great weather helped make this week but even our previous stay (with gales, storms and plenty of rain) wasn't dampened by the weather. It's a gorgeous stay, in a lovely house with attentive to detail owners. Highly suspect we'll be booking a fortnight very soon
-
"A wonderfully place to stay you feel relaxed soon has you walk in to the property."
The owner comes to check everything is ok on arrival and they never bothered us after they also left a welcome pack wich was wonderful there are plenty of dog walks that my wife and daughter went on all in all recommend the school house to all
-
"Lovely property in a fantastic location: being so near to the castle was amazing."
Appreciated being able to park off road. The cottage is spacious, well furnished and very well equipped. Extremely thoughtful and comprehensive welcome pack, which makes such a difference. Great location for exploring and we found lots of new places (Burry Port, Preseli, Fishguard etc) as well as visiting some old favourites (Tenby/Saundersfoot, Wiseman's Bridge, Swansea/Mumbles). We still have so much to explore in the area that we may well book again... The only issue we had was with the boiler not firing properly for hot water and the owner responded very quickly, although it couldn't be fixed during our time there.
-
"Probably the best holiday cottage we have ever stayed in."
Very friendly owner. Even posted a birthday card through the door during our stay. Lovely setting. Great base for exploring. Highly Recommended.
-
"Probably one of the best properties we have stayed at."
Every little thing was spot on. Everything that is required for a relaxing stay was there. The owners live next door but apart from introducing themselves and answering our questions as to where to eat, drink , shop and take the dogs left us alone but did say not to hesitate to pop next door if we needed anything else. Thanks for letting us share your property.
-
"We had a lovely short break at castle house school it was clean quite and cosy there was nothing we needed as everything was there for our use 10 out of 10 to the owners we will be going back castle just up the road and nice walks on your doorstep !"
-
"Property very comfortable, warm and has everything that you need."
Excellent holiday welcome pack.
-
"Beautiful cottage, extremely well decorated, extremely comfortable and cosy."
Rear enclosed area for dog was a bonus.
-
"Absolutely outstanding and the welcome pack was perfect"
-
"Really lovely place to stay."
The house had everything we could possibly need, and is in a brilliant location. Spotlessly clean, comfortable beds and really nicely decorated. Possibly one of the best houses we’ve ever stayed in!
-
"The Cottage is a beautiful period property lovely decorated."
Everything you need has been thought of, it is very clean and cosy. The garden is very secure great for dogs. The location was very quiet, convenient for going to the Gower or Pembrokeshire. Kidwelly has lots of hand eating places and history on the doorstep of the cottage. Mike and Christine are lovely. I would highly recommend a break at the cottage.
-
"An absolutely lovely 'cottage', in a quiet location literally minutes walk from castle, riverside walks and local shops."
It's surprisingly large, the pictures do not give the home justice: roomy, extremely comfortable and very warm. Amenities and furnishings excellent, the only 2 negatives in our opinion were 1. having only booked one week and needing to leave and 2. the weather, whilst wet, was too warm to give the remote control fire a go! Very helpful and welcoming owners dropped by on day of arrival, and the welcome pack was one of the most generous we've had with a lovely personal touch. Local shops for all you need, but not a long drive to megastores. Enjoyed walking Pembrey Country Park (not far at all by car) despite being rained off/walks cut short on a couple of days the dog still enjoyed her forest and beach walks. Absolutely lovely break - now wishing we'd booked both weeks of a 2 week break in this cottage!
-
"Lovely accommodation."
Everything you could possibly need. Really nice welcome tray of goodies and Mike was very helpful, giving us ideas of where to explore. The people of Kidwelly were so friendly, we would love to return to this lovely house and explore more of the area. Hilary and Philip
-
"Beautiful cottage!"
Everything was thought of down to milk in the fridge and tea and coffee on arrival. Kitchen was a joy to use - I stayed here with my 3 daughters and cooked every night but one. We ate out at Naz, fabulous meal, also the Kidwelly Deli was fab for lunch. Our dogs were in heaven with so many beaches to choose from, all within an hours drive. Favourite was Freshwater East. Small issues were, only the king bed was comfy, the others not. One of the sofas was lovely to sit on, but the matching armchair was actually a bit broken. But this would not be enough to stop us staying again.
-
"Generally very good accommodation, would stay there again."
Criticisms Awkward to have to sleep upstairs and wash and bath downstairs. Ran out of toilet roll one evening, no spares to be seen, too late to ask proprietor to provide some - had to go to late opening supermarket to buy some. Property need doormat to wipe feet on when entering
-
"We had to leave the cottage 2 days earlier then we wanted to not the peaceful ..."
We had to leave the cottage 2 days earlier then we wanted to not the peaceful setting we were expecting a lot of road noise, and the constant barking of neighbours dog actually spoilt our holiday
-
"Cottage set in the historical part of Kidwelly which was amazing."
Dogs walks from the dog. Clean and tidy. Owners around and very helpful. Everything you need for a relaxing holiday.
-
"We had a great stay at Castle School House in Kidwelly."
The house was really spacious, clean and well decorated with everything we needed including a nice welcome pack. Our hosts Christine and Mike were very welcoming and friendly. There were even some extras we didn't expect - a gas BBQ, recliner sofas, a huge DVD collection to choose from, body boards and kites to borrow, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed using. The house is in a great location, only a two minute walk from the nearest shop and ten minutes to a large co-op. We had a lovely breakfast at the Gatehouse, a minute away, and had some great food from one of the local Chinese takeaways (also serving fish & chips) and the Kidwelly Deli. It was just a couple of minutes by foot to the impressive Kidwelly Castle, and we also discovered an amazing kids' play area by walking along the river past the castle one day. We spent several days visiting the Pembrey Country Park with its fantastic sandy beach, dry ski slope and toboggan run, and travelled a short distance to the indoor water park in Swansea on a rainy day. It was a perfect week away in friendly South Wales, definitely recommended.
-
"The cottage was fab , short of nothing everything you could think of ."
We found it very relaxing , welcoming dog friendly which is a must for us . The owners are a lovely couple if you need anything they are approachable if you don’t you are left to your holiday . We would go back at some point .
-
"Excellent accomodation with everything we needed and more."
Best we've stayed in with Sykes. Owners very friendly and helpful. As dog-owners we found the garden secure and so many dog-friendly places nearby. Definitely want to return.
-
"Excellent holiday accommodation."
So lovely to be able to complete numerous dog walks from the house. Thank you.
-

Lovely house, clean and comfortable, loved sitting in the garden and wonderful walks from the doorstep, thankyou for a lovely wk
-
"Fantastic property, could not find fault with anything, a great place to visit"
-
"Our fourth time here and we have booked for a weekend in December."
Very convenient for us as our son and his family live 10 minutes away. Have to say we would love a dishwasher rather than a washing machine!!
-
"The cottage was amazing."
Large, clean, comfortable, warm, well equipped and very quiet. The welcome pack was a nice touch. Ideal base for exploring the area.
-
"We had such a lovely stay at Castle School House."
Christine and Mike were so welcoming and helpful. The welcome pack was a lovely touch. There was an issue with the boiler but Christine and Mike organised plumbers and offered alternative arrangements and made sure that we all had what we needed and were comfortable. We are really grateful for the time and effort they put in. We loved our stay here. The house was comfortable, warm and well equipped with everything you need. The village is really nice and you are well situated to go off and explore the coast as well as The Brecon Beacons. Thanks for a fab week!
-
"We stayed for a week in Feb 22."
The house exceeded our expectations. It was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. It is on a very quiet one way road and there was no sound of traffic ever. Very peaceful. It was very well equipped, with plenty of everything. There were many useful touches like plenty of books, dvds, games, as well as notepad and pencils, good welcome pack, comfortable bed. Everything was great. Just one note of caution. I have Sky mobile and the signal inside the house was zero, and even outside it was not all that great. All in all, a lovely and enjoyable stay.
-
"Superb cottage."
Extremely comfortable. We will be back. Thank you.
-
"Second visit here and just a perfect location and the dogs loved it!"
-
"We had a lovely stay at Castle School House, it really was home from home and so well equipped and comfortable."
Our host left us a very generous welcome pack full of Welsh goodies which was very much appreciated after a long journey. Christine also very kindly posted my sweatshirt back to me which I left behind. I would thoroughly recommend.
-
"Had the best time away at Castle School House, Kidwelly."
The cottage was so clean and welcoming. The hosts Christine and Mike were wonderful and thought of everything in the cottage. We are definitely going back next year.
-
"A lovely property just a two-minute walk to Kidwelly Castle, with the facilities provided to make it a comfortable holiday."
AIso a good base for exploring this beautiful part of South Wales by car, foot, and the nearby train station.
-
"We stayed here 2 years' ago, and our latest stay was definitely as good as the last."
The house is perfectly located near Kidwelly Castle and only a short walk from the town centre. The welcome pack was excellent and very generous, and overall the house is extremely well equipped. We did have an issue with our heating and hot water on a couple of mornings, but the problem was resolved very quickly and efficiently by Mike - that's one of the benefits of the owners living next door. Since our last visit quite a number of the pubs and eating places in Kidwelly had closed down which meant there wasn't anywhere dog friendly we could walk to and eat in the evenings which was a bit of a shame. However, there are pubs, like the Red Lion ,which are only a short drive away.
-
"We had a wonderful stay at Castle School house with the best welcome we have ever had from the hosts Christine and Mike, an amazing welcome pack too!"
The cottage is beautiful, very comfortable spotlessly clean and extremely well equipped with everything you could need. The courtyard is a lovely quiet little sun trap where we enjoyed sitting and eating. We had lovely walks with our two Labradors by the river, right on the doorstep and enjoyed trips to some of the beautiful beaches close by, all in all we have had a very pleasant, relaxing stay and would highly recommend, Thank you so much Christine and Mike, we hope to come again one day.
-
"We loved our stay at Castle School House!"
We had everything we needed and more and were able to relax and enjoy the gorgeous sunny weather we were lucky enough to experience. The location was perfect for visiting lots of beautiful beaches with our children and for amazing bike rides and lovely walks. We would love to return- we have such happy memories of our time here!
-
"The owner contacted us the day before our holiday to introduce herself and to check our arrival time which was a lovely gesture."
On arrival, there was a welcome pack left out for us and Christine popped in to greet us and to tell us where she lived should there be any problems. She was really lovely. The house was so well equipped and its the best property we have stayed in with Sykes. Everything was so clean and tidy. The area is so quiet and peaceful and just the right place to stay after having an eye operation 2 days before our holiday. The garden and courtyard were a good size for our Chow Chow and it was completely safe for him. He loved staying out until 10pm every evening and we had to coax him in with treats as he loved it so much. We are hoping to book another holiday at Castle School House next year.
-
"We’ve had a fabulous time at castle school house, Kidwelly."
We’ve had an amazing experience the cottage is just so beautiful we have loved every minute of it. The cottage is so well equipped with everything and more that you could possibly want together with the welcoming touches, we felt very spoilt. The hospitality from the owners was so welcoming and they let us know that they were there should we need them, such a lovely couple. The walks around the town and along the river and the nature reserve together with the friendly locals were just lovely. So many beautiful places around to visit and shopping in Carmarthen on the way for supplies is just 15 minutes from the cottage. I found it so difficult to leave this beautiful place
-
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Castle School House."
Cosy and well-appointed, with very friendly and welcoming hosts. Great location too - a castle on your doorstep and lovely beaches a few minutes down the road.
-
"Lovely period cottage with welcoming hosts and close to village centre."
Would recommend this to anyone and would have no hesitation in staying there again.
-
"Very welcoming cottage, beautifully equipped with everything you needed."
The only slight negative was not knowing to take our Sky card with us. Generous welcome pack and dog friendly. Beaches and country park at Pembrey were fantastic. Thank you for a lovely break.
-
"We had a lovely time."
The area is quiet and friendly. The cottage owners made us feel very welcome, the cottage was very clean and cosy and very well provided. The best Sykes property so far and warrants a second visit. A big thank you yo Chris and Mike the owners.
-
"A charming cottage situated right by the castle."
The hosts were warm and welcoming. Very flexible and willing to help. They recommended a local bar and restaurant and also offered an early check in and later check out. The cottage was spotless with a welcome pack which included a bottle of fizz. Would definitely return.
-
"The house is superb and is extremely well furnished and equipped."
Its location is excellent being close to the centre of Kidwelly and only 10 minutes'; drive to Pembrey Country Park. We've stayed at quite a number of other properties before and we have to say that the welcome pack we received surpassed anything we've ever had previously. Our main contact with our hosts was via Christine who was on hand when we arrived in case we had any issues. We didn't want to leave when our stay came to an end so we did ask if it would be possible to stay longer. Unfortunately - as we expected - the property was already booked, but Christine did kindly ring around other property owners in the area to see if anything else was available. Sadly nothing came of this, but we very much appreciated the efforts Christine made on our behalf. For dog owners staying at the property the only pubs we found that served food, were within walking distance and were dog friendly were the Mason's Arms and The White Lion ; of the two the more comprehensive menu is served by The White Lion, but the food in the Mason's Arms was fine. We did also drive to The Red Lion to eat and we'd recommend their food highly although if you have a dog it's probably best to book in advance. In terms of beaches we'd recommend Pembrey, Llansteffan, and Pendine
-
"The accommodation made our holiday it is the best we have stayed in ."
The weather wasnt good so it was nice to have a comfortable accommodation, the owners Mick and Chris was outside when we arrived, really made us feel welcome. There was a welcoming pack, welsh cakes, bottle of wine, crisp, popcorn, cake. Will definitely go again.

"Lovely house, owner makes you very welcome."
Lovely area too.
-
"Fantastic location and amazing accommodation."
Christine was a fantastic host and went above and beyond to make our stay so memorable.
-
"Lovely walks and beaches the people are so helpful and friendly."
Christine the owner made us so welcome and went the extra mile in making our stay enjoyable, would recommend this cottage 100 percent
-
"Lots of historical interest and lovely beach in this area, great for families."
-
"We loved the peaceful location to explore the coastline of Pembrey and further up the coast between Pendine and Tenby."
The coastline scenery was beautiful and majestic on a clear day. The property is so well equipped and well looked after with lots of old character in the architecture. Our dog loved the vast sandy beach of Pembrey sands only a few miles away which stretches for miles and dog friendly for most part even in the Summer! We would highly recommend this house in a non touristy part of South Wales where you from the moment you arrive you can really feel at home. The welcome was extra special as we arrived to find Welsh cakes, a welcome card and even a bottle of prosecco. Lovely views of the hills from the bedrooms. We didn't expect the castle to be so close to the property which is just a 2 minute walk and what a view from one of the towers you can climb up!
