  • "We had a great time in Wales."

.but Maerdy Lodge was abit of a let down for us.. the main thing is there is literally another property 4meters in front of you..all the windows at the front of each property are overlooked..we had to keep our downstairs bedroom curtains shut as there,s just no privacy..I think the closeness of the properties should be made much clearer..the next issue is the damp & damp smell..there are so many damp issues..paint peeling off walls in multiple places..horrible damp musty smell in lounge and front porch..we went and bought air fresheners and were constantly spraying them…black mould in upstairs double room wardrobe..black mould on wall in en-suite bedroom which has been previously cleaned but is now reappearing..main bathroom has damp and peeling paint and the radiator is on constantly we thought to help combat it..other issues en suite toilet is not fixed to floor and moves..and the grout around base of shower tiles and the tiled floor is grubby and has black mould..also the towels are thin and not very big..and you can’t open the helix window and the fan barely works so it just stays damp and wet in here to..I read back through all the reviews while we were there( we only read the top few before booking) and lots of these issues have been noted many times..and are still ongoing..for the money both of these cottages are generating some of these issues should be dealt with! The smell and dampness spoilt the time we were actually in the property..and maybe a new television as it seems to have two large patches of blueness on the screen constantly while watching it..i know it’s an old property but i think it requires some maintenance on it now..but great location..we visited some truly lovely places..nice garden.. lovely comfy sofas..

Perfect for a family group of 8. Fantastic downstairs large bedroom with very large en-suite . Perfect for my mum who has mobility issues. The lodge was clean and has a large outdoor area. We were very lucky with the weather so were able to air outside to eat. It would benefit for a proper garden table rather than the picnic table for comfort.

  • "The property is lovely!"

Inside and out, we had a lovely time, good quality bedding and towels and generally clean. The area is lovely and there was plenty to see and do, and we enjoyed eating out. St David’s was amazing! Unfortunately I wouldn’t return, there was a lot of mould especially on the ceiling in main bedroom, and for some one with COPD and sleep apnea, it makes breathing very hard! I didn’t get much sleep to be honest and had a fair few flare So unfortunately this put a downer on the stay massively!

  • "Very enjoyable stay."

Appreciated the heating and hot water. Very cosy looking, but needs some TLC. The property could do with the following items to improve a visitors experience:- No Pint glasses available. Also some Shower / Bath mats to step out onto, so floor got wet. Hooks on the backs of ‘all’ bedroom doors for dressing gowns, also the same for outside coats as they is nowhere to hang Open staircase needs looking attention, even if some wooden spindles or struts were erected from the floor to the ceiling along the open space. Some of the dining seats are rickety/ loose, so we just used ones that felt safe and solid. Netflix needs attention as it didn’t work. Bath towels needed updating, small size for bath towels and not very thick. Would take my own next time. A toothbrush container needed in both bathrooms, we had to use kids plastic drinks cups from the kitchen. Toilet in en-suite in larger bedroom fills up very high and is temperamental. Larger fridge freezer needed as when a lot of people staying, not much room to put chilled produce, a new fridge freezer could be installed in the tall kitchen cupboard where they currently store brooms and mops. A much larger saucepan needed for ‘family’ sized spaghetti bolognaise meals etc..as only 2 x medium sized saucepans available. More drinking mugs needed and a New frying pan needed, as the non stick has worn off. Cobwebs noted. some very high up and hard to reach in the wooden rafters. All said we had a good stay, the lounge was comfy and the inglenook fireplace is lovely. Lodge is very warm and plenty of space to park 2-3 cars.

  • "Our party had a lovely time at the lodge despite Storm Agnes."

Positives - The bedrooms have been furnished to a high standard and the beds (2 ground floor) are extremely comfortable. The downstairs double is the smallest of the 4 bedrooms, but my husband and I opted to sleep in this room because of it's close proximity to the downstairs bathroom and the fact that we are short and it has quite a low doorway, my brother-in-law is tall, so in order to avoid any headbumps, had the master. All the interior doors are beautiful and really enhance the property. We preferred to eat out, so did very little in the kitchen other than cups of tea and cereal, that said, looking at what was available, the kitchen is very well stocked. The settees in the lounge are very comfortable, Wi-Fi excellent and good tv reception. The outside area is spacious and an asset if you have children. Negatives - It should be made clearer in the property's description that there is another cottage directly opposite, about 20 feet. We were surprised, but it didn't affect our stay; the other guests were lovely, but a loud and boisterous group would not have been fun. It is very clear that much hard work and effort has been spent making this a beautiful holiday accommodation, but sadly one thing lets it down - damp. There is an obvious issue in the bathroom, possibly a leak from the shower (the wall is actually wet to the touch and paint falling off) and in several places on the ground floor, the plaster is coming away from the wall. You can also see where mould has previously been on some walls and cleaned off or painted over. Some of this issue may be condensation, caused when the property is left unoccupied for periods of time with no ventilation? Heating the property helped with the smell and feel of damp, but obviously we did not want to leave it on when we were not there. Either way, in order for this beautiful lodge to be the first class property it deserves, this issue needs to be addressed.

  • "The cottage was generally nice and well appointed but had several issues I wouldn't have expected."

As noted in the listing the cottage is close to another property. As other reviewers have noted it is extremely close and nearly all the windows look out on it. We could stand in our kitchen at the back of Maerdy Lodge and clearly see the other guests cooking in their kitchen through our living room. Not a big problem for us but should also note that the garden from their property is across the best view from the garden of Maerdy Lodge. Bigger issues for us were that when we arrived the house was full of flies and remained so for the whole week no matter what we did. The proper also smelled damp, particularly in the twin bedroom and you could see damp coming through the paintwork on many walls around the house. It also looks like there's a problem with the shower in the main bathroom causing damp on the wall behind it. The bathroom light pull was in a bowl in the front room and you couldn't turn the bathroom light on or off so we had to fix it. The shower in the en suite wasn't draining and was threatening to flood the whole room so we had to clean out the drain. The toilet in the ensuite wobbles as it isn't properly fixed to the floor and if someone is using the shower in the main bathroom the water in the ensuite toilet bubbles up like a volcano! There's old chewing gum stuck to the floor in the kitchen and there was a broken glass left in the cupboard. There were used BBQ skewers left on the outside table, the outdoor furniture would have been lovely to use but it's right next to all the bins and the main wheelie bin had been left about three quarters full of rubbish from the previous guests!

  • ""Misleading listing" The cottage Mardy Cwyd opposite was deliberately omitted from the photo to give the impression that Mardy Lodge stood alone!"

In truth the cottage opposite was just 20ft away with its kitchen window looking straight into the Lodge's Master bedroom, Lounge & the dining area thus affording no privacy in these areas without the curtains being drawn. The Lodge is in need of some maintenance and the cleaners need to use a cobweb brush in all corners as there were numerous spiders and cobwebs.

We had a wonderful week here. Kitchen was very well equipped and the main bathroom had a nice powerful shower. Everything was spotlessly clean and in very good condition! The cottage is in a quiet location, surrounded by green, which is lovely! It is also in a perfect location for exploring the Pembrokeshire coast. We walked several sections of the coastal paths and all were within 15-20 mins drive (one we started from the cottage itself). We can also recommend Solva for gift shopping, dinner (The Cambrian Inn) and Welsh cakes (MamGu).

It was well equipped, warm, clean, comfortable and quiet. 4 good sized bedrooms, the ensuite being massive. The kitchen was large with just about everything you could need, there were even the small handy touches like washing up liquid, dishwasher tabs and aluminium foil and cling film. Very comfortably fitted out. We all slept really well on the good quality beds. Sofas are super comfy too, and we did use the extra blankets in the bathroom for the lounge. Kitchen well equipped. All in a great location. Constructive feedback (but not a criticism), although we had plenty of towels, they were quite small and none big enough to wrap around myself to walk around after shower. The loo in the en-suite wobbles and needs fixing at the base, as you could tell it was moving pipes as could hear the water go on and off in the cistern. It would be welcoming to have a couple of real basics like salt and pepper pots. Realise this might be a covid thing but have had welcome packs before with just a few basic items like a couple of tea bags/coffee sachets/biscuits. We had an excellent time and I was really pleased with the cottage and how well it was presented and equipped. Thanks for renting it out at an affordable price. We loved it.

Beds were extremely comfortable and warm. Plenty of space inside and out, the children loved the garden. Kitchen had everything that we needed. Pleasantly surprised by the smart TV with Netflix account. We had bought a small TV from home (children would not cope without their Netflix), perhaps the details could be updated to reflect this. My only small criticism, would have been nice to have bath mat towels for the bathrooms - the onsuite floor is particularly cold. Definitely would visit again and recommend to friends. However as in the past with Sykes, the cottage was not very clean! Lots of cobwebs everywhere, oven trays dirty etc. We could not tell that extra cleaning had been carried out due to covid! The living area smelled very damp and fusty. Also I feel it should be made clear about the low doorway to bedroom. Our party member who had to use this room was 6'3" tall and banged his head badly. The bed having a footer panel also needs to be mentioned as it is no good for tall people. By making people aware of these things and proper cleaning it would be a wonderful place to stay.

The lodge can get a little cold and feel damp. We had to heat and air. There is lovely garden setting which would benefit from a bbq (we took our own electrical one). You need to be aware that this is in a rural setting close to farms whereby muck spreading takes place which means that there can be quite a few flies around. A car is essential to get out and about.

The cottage was well-equipped and the electric "log burner" kept us cosy during the initial cooler weather. The cottage was in a great rural location which meant it was peaceful with limited passing traffic, but it was also easy to get out to the coast and up to St David's. We spent most of our week exploring the coastline between Solva and Porthgain (where we enjoyed excellent fish and chips on our last night). We enjoyed getting our milk from the "milking parlour" at Bay View Stores in Solva - a great way to reduce plastic waste and highly recommend the local produce being sold there too. The proximity of Maerdy Cwtch, the cottage opposite wasn't a problem for us as we were the only guests during our week's stay and the two properties would be ideal for two families holidaying together, but could perhaps be made more obvious in the property listing. Maerdy Lodge was a great base and we'd definitely consider a return visit.
