  • "The level, or lack of, cleanliness was quite poor."

Primarily in the bathrooms but the spiders and cobwebs were excessive, even for a farm house. The kitchen however was well equipped and very clean.

We have just completed the total refurbishment of our first bathroom and the rest will be completed this winter. Having done the kitchens, 3pc suites and mattresses we are fully aware that the bathrooms are getting to the end of their shelf life! Cobwebs I am afraid are a total nightmare. They are back overnight and we do our very best so I can only apologise on behalf of the spiders and assure everyone we are trying our best in the worst year I have ever known for them!! Reviews, I feel should work both ways! I am a bit disappointed this guest did not inform us or apologise for her dog chewing a huge hole in our throw on the double bed!! Property Owner

Facilities at the cottage are good. We would say the downstairs bathroom could do with updating and probably a few more mirrors (seems minor) but better placed. The owner Roger was always available if you had any queries. All in all a wonderful place to stay homely and welcoming. Would definitely recommend. Thank you Roger

Great outdoor space with views of the sea to enjoy a BBQ. Relaxed informal environment which was perfect with a dog! We loved being able to walk to Newport either via the coastal path or through the countryside at the back. As well as beautiful beaches, it was the perfect place to explore other local attractions too - loved Ty Canol Woods and Pentre Ifan… very special and seeped in ancient history …. Would defintiely visit again- Roger was very helpful with friendly advice too- Diolch yn fawr x

Modern up-to-date kitchen with plenty of kitchen ware, crockery and cutlery. Beds comfortable. The bathroom needs updating but I understand this is being addressed. Very quiet location with easy access to Newport. I would be very happy to recommend Ty Felin as a perfect family cottage.

  • "The property would benefit from a good deep clean."

Mop is tired & old & bucket has no section to wring out mop. Floors very dirty. We bought mop, bucket & flash anti-bac cleaner (all taken with us on leaving). Cleaned floor 4 times to get to acceptable level. Dusty & cobweb ridden throughout. Carpets are filthy - we photographed numerous stains & emailed to Sykes to ensure owner couldn't suggest it was us. Property smelt very musty. Bedding damp (we had fortunately brought a throw as tend to find duvets too hot). Sprayed lots of Febreze (bought a number of cans) & aired as much as we could, but still smelly & all clothing taken (& throw) has had to be washed on return as now also smelly (including everything washed there). Tiles in bathroom loose & broken, which we could see reported in visitor book back in July, yet still unresolved. Hoover was also reported as broken in July, but we found it in same state - not working, full of filth & no wheels. Disappointing that issues reported are left unresolved. Had a courtesy call from Sykes early in week & reported all issues. We did have an issue with fumes from boiler during the holiday & unfortunately the owner was very dismissive, even offering to supply number of plumber rather than call himself. We can tell difference between spilt fuel smell & burnt fuel fumes - also no smell until Thursday evening, so odd that we wouldn't smell it sooner, when room in question was used daily. Property could be great, but these issues let it down.

Very disappointed with this feedback after a full season of very happy visitors! The floors were all fully hoovered and thoroughly mopped with flash on change over and I fully inspected post cleaning, polishing taps and mirrors and a final cobweb check. The cottage is a converted farm building with exposed beams and stone walls. I realise some people who are used to pristine smooth plastered walls don't take to the "rustic" feel but to me, and most of my happy visitors, this is the character of the property that I have lovingly restored. In the week prior to this visit a brand new outside boiler was installed with the flue pipe taken right up above the eaves of the building. The new boiler is so efficient that the exhaust is secondarily burnt and there are virtually no oil fumes. The fact that the boiler is outside means it is impossible to have fumes in the cottage! When the old boiler was taken out a small amount of oil was spilt on the floor of the boiler room, and I apologised for this when the visitors arrived. A visit by Sykes staff on the day of departure did not smell any fumes. I tried to explain to the guests the fact that it was impossible to get fumes from the boiler into the property but met a very aggressive response at which stage all I could do was suggest they could check this with my plumber if they did not agree with me! The visit coincided with the end of the heatwave and all the bedding had been line dried, aired and ironed during blazing 32C sunshine! Damp? Having renewed the kitchen, three piece suits, mattresses, toppers and duvets, the next on our list is the bathroom. Apologies for the one loose tile which despite being glued three times insists on coming loose. This will be rectified in the refurb at the end of the season. A mop and bucket and Henry hoover and any cleaning aids are available to all our guests. It is stored in the laundry room next door and all they have to do is ask. I do tell my guests on arrival that if there is ANYTHING they need please ask. I have been around all week, waved and spoken to the guests and not once have they asked for anything! This has not been an issue to all our cheerful happy guests we have had over many years. I hope these guests and their four very loud dogs are able to find a more suitable property for their next holiday! Property Owner

  • "I would like to say on behalf of our family that we appreciate the host has a beautiful property and we had a great holiday but let down by not having a private exercise area for dogs , as its a dog friendly property , the front door went straight on to the car area so there could be safety issues."

We are luckily an active family so our 2 dogs were walked. So as it stands we would love to go to the area again but not here. The description needs to be updated to explain its a shared holiday site with no private garden attached to each property. Our property didn't have the views described. This isn't a reflection on the owner as he was very hospitable. Would recommend sykes cottages but with more detail about dog space.

He was also about during our stay and was helpful with our queries. Cottage is in a super area, within walking distance of a small cove, coastal footpath, Carningli (nearby hilltop) and Newport. Good dog walking. The cottage is well equipped but cleaning products for the kitchen and bathroom would have been helpful. We were a party of 3 adults, 3 dogs and a toddler. We enjoyed a walk round Teifi Marshes Nature Reserve near Cardigan. We loved the bay beyond Bryn-henllan where there is parking and the pub (Old Sailors) is good for coffee as well as a beer. Talking about beer... there are three breweries not far away; Mantel Brewery (Cardigan), Bluestone Brewing Co (Cilgwyn) and Gwaun Valley Brewery (Pontfaen). Products sampled!

As per previous guests comments the sofas are old, worn, & need updating. 3 of the 6 twin mattresses are completely unusable as every spring can be felt. The kitchen is very up to date & well equipped & the washing machine was brand new. The property was clean but very cobwebby & dusty.

You will be pleased to hear that at the end of another very busy season we have just ordered new three-piece suits and mattresses. Along with the new kitchens the next on the list is a new bathroom as part of our ongoing efforts to make Ty Felin as comfortable as possible for our valued guests! Keep the feedback coming as we need to know what guests require but it would be great to hear it face to face at the time of your visit! Property Owner
