  • "We spent a lovely Autumnal week at Fois House."

It’s perfectly located for trips to the Lochs or Stirling, and evenings spent around the cosy wood burner helped us to really unwind. The cottage now has wifi and we were able to connect to Netflix via the tv box. Already booked again for next year!

  • "Was a well maintained property, well equipped for our arrival."

Initially we got lost en route as lost phone and Internet signal (not the owners fault at all, the info to follow was clear enough). Very pleased when we arrived. Although we brought a Border Terrier and he could easily negate the gate escape. Larger dog would get stuck. No problem as we brought a long lead (he likes to watch outside when we weren't out and about). Showers are good, one single base noted to owner in maintenance but other than that, rooms are comfortable. A little warm, fan came in handy. Maybe a long mirror in hallway upstairs or one room would be a good addition. (Weather was fabulous and made for sitting on the decking). Comfortable lounge and a huge kitchen dining space with a comfortable sofa too. Don't want to say more as it was a hidden gem. Thank you Sue ❤

Thank you for staying, you are very welcome. I am sorry about the single divan. Have contacted bed company to deliver soon. Noted regarding the mirror and will look at. Best wishes Sue Property Owner

Tastefully furnished and everything we needed. I’m not a walker due to my health but the tranquillity and comfort made this an ideal relaxing break. I loved watching (and trying to name) the various birds who chose to visit the veranda. I loved the intense colours of the countryside. A great holiday and not too far to Callander which had everything we needed. I’m definitely going back

It was spacious and very comfortable, a real home from home. It was beautifully clean and we loved both indoor and outdoor spaces. We struggled to connect to the Wi-Fi but in the end I think this added to the charm as we could ‘switch off’. The surroundings were beautiful, lots of interest and walks from the front door. The owner was quick to respond to messages prior to our arrival and was very friendly. A great holiday in a great location- thank you!

There is no Wifi which is advertised but that turned out to be a massive positive. How often does anyone actually turn off and read a book? Our 17 year old spent most evenings curled up laughing with us, that would never have happened with her phone glued to her hand. We all had chance to log on and look at places of interest during the day when out and about. Would defo brave the 9 hours car journey and return one day.

Dear Louise Thank you so much for your comments and I am glad the sound of the water falls and bird sounds brought you as much pleasure as I get when there. All the very best Sue Property Owner

The house is very well kept and is stocked with all you could ever need! Sue really has thought of everything and is a lovely lady! The location is so peaceful and set in beautiful surroundings. When we stayed the temperature was unusually high for Scotland so we did struggle to keep the house cool without letting in lots of insects/flies/midges but there is a fan in the bedroom. When sitting at night we would open the sliding doors but keep the curtains closed to try and limit the number of tiny visitors! We loved having the washing machine aswell, so you don't need to take a whole week's worth of clothes! We loved the house, honestly can't think of any negatives- thankyou Sue!

There was great walking from the door in the Woodland Trust's Glen Finglas estate and further afield, both for a bit of a toodle under the trees in hot weather and for longer walks. A great holiday.

Bright, modern and we loved the balcony for a morning cuppa or evening beer. The Wednesday quiz at the tea room was good fun. Nothing to fault the owner for and would definitely stay again. Not so happy with the info on the Sykes listing and subsequently received via chat. The listing says there is no washing machine...but there is! As a result we brought extra clothes that took up space in our overloaded car which could have been avoided if the listing was more accurate. Please attend to this Sykes, especially to your chat team when asked to double-check. Thanks.

The small touches around the property were lovely: cookbooks, milk in the fridge, homemade flapjack, spices and herbs, books, games, and so many cleaning products! It took us a while to work out how to keep the fire alight - once we found the instructions we were warm! The location was perfect for us, tranquil and light. There were a few minor issues though: 1. There were stains on our bedsheets - not nice to sleep on 2. The towels were rather lacking: in variety of sizes and softness 3. I can understand why post it notes were placed around the property but we did feel rather 'watched' by these, so we took them down! 4. The vacuum was blocked - we fixed this. These are minor points and will not stop us coming back again - we plan to book for next year.

  • "We had a really lovely stay at Fois House, which is actually quite a bit bigger than some of the images suggest."

The property was very well equipped and perfectly clean. The location was beautiful, with plenty of walks around and a pub just down the road (although it was mostly closed while we were there). Lots of bird life (owners had filled the feeders) and the garden was secure enough to let dogs out without worry. Downstairs shower room really handy, especially if you have dogs. Showers were also very powerful. Beds very comfy. Overall I would definitely recommend Fois house to anyone and would like to stay again. Only a couple of small downsides. First was the lack of WiFi or cell reception (our fault, the owner does notify of this on the listing). We're all for disconnecting but it's actually quite hard to plan walks, days out etc without using the internet (I use OS MAPS app, for example). Also, on rainy days, of which there are a lot in Scotland, it's helpful to have internet for entertainment purposes (Netflix et al) – and the property didn't have a huge selection of books or DVDs (we actually bought some from a charity shop in Callander to add to their stocks!). They did have some good board games though. I believe owners are working to rectify WiFi issue. Generally we found there was not enough hot water in the tank for four adults to have showers consecutively, so two of us usually had showers in the evenings, which is fine. Finally, when we arrived the house was extremely cold, but once we had the fire going and heating up it was ok. Can't fault their eco credentials on these last two points though, and owners used eco-friendly cleaning materials which was great.

On the plus side, there is a washing maschine that is not listed.

What wasn't very accommodating was the customer service from Sykes. I understand it was an unusual experience with our flights being cancelled due to Flybe going adminstration but my options for potentially adjusting my booking were very limited and were placed under a end of the day deadline, which was very stressful on top of already trying to seek alternative transport. Sykes said no refund was available, only that we could change our dates once and once only. The issue was that we had no idea when we would reschedule our booking for as who knows when a different airline would pick up the Southampton to Glasgow route in place of Flybe. We had no choice but to keep our booking with very little support from Sykes. I don't blame the cottage owner at all as she seemed more than accommodating and understanding when we met. However I shall not be booking with Sykes again in the future.

About the location

CALLANDER

Stirling 14 miles, Loch Lomond 30 miles, Perth 37 miles.

The popular tourist town of Callander, in the Stirling region of Scotland, sits on the River Teith and is known as the Gateway to the Highlands. Located on the edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, and surrounded by beautiful scenery, Callander has been a favourite stopping point for tourists on their way to the Highlands for over 150 years. There is evidence of a settlement here reaching as far back as the Neolithic period, and to demonstrate this, a little way east of the town is Scotland’s largest chambered cairn, along with several Iron Age forts to the west. A disciple of Columba of Iona, Saint Kessog preached in this area in the 6th century and there is a knoll, Tom na Chessaig or Hill of Kessog, named in his honour, set near the River Teith. The town today is brimming with shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and supermarkets, providing plenty of amenities. There are many walks and cycle paths around the town as well as the many lochs and hills of the nearby National Park. Callander is within easy reach of Stirling and Perth, and even Glasgow and Edinburgh can be found for a pleasant day trip either by car or train from Stirling.
