  • "This is a lovely cottage in a fantastic location, with breathtaking walks from the door."

There is a well equipped dining kitchen with lovely views over the extensive garden. The lounge area has a cosy wood burner and a patio door onto the decking. We've already booked for next year!

It’s a lovely, clean, warm and comfortable little cottage with everything you need for a perfect holiday. An ideal base to explore the area both by car and on foot. So many amazing walks right on the doorstep - no need to use the car except for supplies! Sitting in front of the fire and watching the array of birds on the feeders is a joy in itself. Highly recommend

  • "This is a comfortable cottage for 2/3 people in a lovely location."

It has all the facilities you could reasonably expect. Lots of walks and cycling to be had locally and the birds on the bird feeders were a real treat, but you need to budget for £10-£15/week to keep them topped up - the woodpeckers and nuthatches really get through some food. When the wind drops the midges come out and don't think long trousers will protect you - if you're sitting still you can still get bites up to your knees!

Thank you for your feed back and I am glad you enjoyed the wild life and many walks and wonderful scenery on the door step. Best wishes Sue Property Owner

Watching the numerous birds come to the bird feeders was amazing but unfortunately we did not see any red squirrels or pine martens during out stay. The only down side was the lack of communication with the outside world but this was mentioned in the description of the property. However, to some it would be a necessity to use a phone or email.

Thank you and I am glad you enjoyed the peace and quiet and wild life. The pole is up and fibre not far away so hopefully connection will be made soon. Best wishes Sue Property Owner

It's a lovely property, very clean, cosy and comfortable with everything we needed. There was a lot of rain while we were there and it was nice to sit and relax in front of the wood burner. The location was perfect, with some great walks right on the doorstep and many more within a 15-20 minute drive. It was very quiet and peaceful with a nice garden that our cocker spaniel enjoyed exploring. The owner, Sue, couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. We would definitely return to the Shieling and would recommend to anyone looking for a quiet break with lots of scenery and walks.

The weather was rather wet and cold so we found the constant heat from the storage heaters made it easy to dry our clothes. There was plenty of room in the cottage which was great as we had a lot of outdoor gear with us. Perfect for the 3 of us. A superb location with lots of short or long walks to suit all abilities right from the door. For the more adventurous there are a couple of good mountains close by (Ben Ledi, Ben Venue) plus an epic 24km upland mountain bike route (The Meall), again starting from the door. In poorer weather, and in winter evenings, the cottage is so cosy, especially with the stove going. The fixtures and fittings and furnishings in the cottage are all top quality and added to the homely feel. There is nothing we could think that could be improved on. We hope to return again soon.

The cottage is clean, extemely well equipped and easier to find than I'd expected. The wood burner meant I was toasty warm even in January, and the bath was also very welcome after long walks. Speaking of which, there are some really good walks right on the doorstep of the Cottage. The Woodland Trust have established clear waymarked routes of varying lengths, and the cottage is also well placed for the Trossachs Trail and the National Cycle Network. I had super days in Glen Finglas, at Loch Katrine, around Loch Vennachar and in Callendar and Stirling - even in January there was plenty to do, though it's best to plan ahead to understand opening times etc in low season. The scenery is just epic.

We absolutely loved our stay, nestled within the hills of the Trossachs. Plenty of walking to be done from the front door or to be used as a base for trips further afield. I managed to tick off Ben Lomond during our stay. The cottage is perfect for a little get away, very cosy. We loved it. The kitchen is very well equipped, we did eat in on a number of occasions. The village is very quiet, and very dark at night, perfect for viewing the night sky! There is a little tea room open Thursday to Sunday which we definitely recommend, very friendly staff and really nice food! We took a trip to Edinburgh from the cottage, just 90 minutes drive and you're there, makes for a good daytrip. So if you're wanting the best of both worlds, I'd recommend this cottage. The birds on the feeders on the back garden are brilliant to watch, we saw so many breeds! Blue tit, Great tit, Nuthatch, a pair of Goldfinch (for a few seconds), Woodpecker, and even a Sparrowhawk swooped down. A Red Squirrel even paid us a visit. Finally, Sue was great, she was up in the other house and was very easy to talk to and left us to it. The only downside was that we only booked one week. We will be back!

It has all the essential equipment you need for a comfortable week's self-catering, and it was such a nice touch to enjoy home baking from the owner, which was there on my arrival. It was a very wet week during my stay, but I still managed to get out on walks or cycle rides every day, with interesting routes starting right from the cottage door. There is an excellent tearoom just down the lane, and a good bar / bistro nearby too. The bird feeders just outside the window always have plenty of interesting wildlife action, as testified in the visitor book. I travelled to the cottage by bicycle from Dunblane, so its a feasible option for non car owners, provided you're reasonably fit ! It was good to be able to keep my bicycle in the ample sized porch too. I would definitely hope to return again, preferably when the sun comes out !

It's our second visit - we were so impressed last year, we couldn't wait to go again, and we weren't disappointed. The cottage is cosy but spacious, with lovely grounds and several seating areas meaning you can chose the sunny or shaded parts. It's fabulous to sit in with a cold glass of something after a day walking in the nearby amazing Trossachs. We were fortunate enough to go during this heatwave, and a fan had thoughtfully been provided. (It's worth a mention that the weather wasn't so fabulouse last year, and it was lovely to come back to the Sheiling and light the fire to dry out!) The cottage is comfortable, well equipped, close enough to Callender for facilities but remote enough to feel a world away from all the hustle and bustle. Our tips for days out would be Loch Katrine (if you're a walker, walk the 12.5 miles around the shore and catch the ferry back); the far shore of Loch Venacher for walking; and Loch Achray. They're all within 15 minutes drive. In Callender, we ate at The Old Rectory, which was delicious food and friendly service. It's worth a mention that it's really nice to be in touch with the owner directly for key collection - especially as Sue is so friendly and helpful. This personal touch is lovely. Can't wait to return :-)

I was pleased to find The Sheiling on your website; and then delighted when we arrived! This is definitely the best cottage we have booked in five years of cottage holidays. The exterior shots cannot do justice to the peaceful location and how lovely it is to enjoy the setting, the wild birds, the peace and quiet..... The bed is exceptional - we both have bad backs (my husband had major spinal surgery in February) and the bed here is of a very high standard - we have previously had to cut short our holiday due to poor beds, so this was a delight. The cottage is practical for guests with pets; cosy, beautifully furnished. To arrive to Lemon Drizzle Cake and milk in the fridge are lovely little touches! The Lemon Drizzle didn't last 48 hours :-) I have been home for one day and am already planning when we can make a return visit - hopefully that shows how much we loved staying at this cottage.

About the location

CALLANDER

Stirling 14 miles, Loch Lomond 30 miles, Perth 37 miles.

The popular tourist town of Callander, in the Stirling region of Scotland, sits on the River Teith and is known as the Gateway to the Highlands. Located on the edge of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, and surrounded by beautiful scenery, Callander has been a favourite stopping point for tourists on their way to the Highlands for over 150 years. There is evidence of a settlement here reaching as far back as the Neolithic period, and to demonstrate this, a little way east of the town is Scotland’s largest chambered cairn, along with several Iron Age forts to the west. A disciple of Columba of Iona, Saint Kessog preached in this area in the 6th century and there is a knoll, Tom na Chessaig or Hill of Kessog, named in his honour, set near the River Teith. The town today is brimming with shops, bars, restaurants, cafes and supermarkets, providing plenty of amenities. There are many walks and cycle paths around the town as well as the many lochs and hills of the nearby National Park. Callander is within easy reach of Stirling and Perth, and even Glasgow and Edinburgh can be found for a pleasant day trip either by car or train from Stirling.
