  • "I booked this cottage for myself and 2 friends."

It was important to have a ground floor bedroom and bathroom for myself as I have limited mobility and visual impairment at 83yrs. The twin bedroom I had was not comfortable at all. It was cold, and the listing did not make it clear that there was nowhere to hang clothes. The only space for this was an alcove covered with a curtain, but the only way to access this was to climb over the bed, which I was unable to do! Behind the curtain there was a rail, however, there were no coat hangers. I find this very annoying and puzzling as to why they wouldn't be included. In this day and age of airbnb etc, these should be the minimum standard. There should have 'been some hooks or something in the room to hang things on, so as not to have to climb over the bed. This should be made clear in the listing. If 2 people were sharing the room, there would be nowhere to put a case or clothes. There did not appear to be any blankets in case of cold nights. The stairs were narrow and very dangerous due to there being no handrail. Anyone with mobility issues would not be safe climbing these stairs. This should be made clear in the details. We had to mop the kitchen floor when we arrived as it was very sticky. We have noticed that other reviewers have mentioned cutlery and crockery not being clean. The house is dressed with the bare minimum of comfort and expense. This could be much nicer with a tiny little bit of effort and would not cost much either. It is clear the owners are working for profit only and not in the interests of their clients. The lounge area could be made more cosy by the addition of a warm mat, it did not feel like a space to relax in when the weather was bad. My friends are younger than me and more physically able, however, they also found the property lacking in comfort.

Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that the property wasn't quiet right for you. The Cottage is a quintessential country cottage, with original staircase and room sizes. We do try to make this as clear as possible, with both pictures, description and floor plan. The beds and mattresses are brand new but we do thank you for your suggestion of more throws, which the owner is going to add. Thank you for passing on about the floors, we will pass this on. The cottage is decorated to not draw away from the character of the house. This is to maximise the feel and look of the period house. There is a warm rug in front of the fire once the fire is lit it make the cottage feel cosey and keeps to the authentic of the house. We hope to invite you back to the Best of Suffolk and Sykes Cottages soon. Property Owner

  • "The cottage is in a nice quiet position."

..the village of Westleton is lovely. The cleaning of the cottage could be better...I had to clean on arrival and dishwash the crockery and cuttlery. I left the property cleaner than when I arrived. A new loo seat would be a good idea. I loved the new hob and oven. Welcome wine and biscuits a nice addition. Overall we really loved the cottage and really pleased we chose 1 Grange Cottages.

  • "We had a great holiday at the house."

Some of the facilities in the kitchen are a bit basic and due to the age of the house noise travels easily - but it is in a great location and we had really good time during our two weeks.

  • "The level of cleanliness was not as expected (we have stopped in the neighbouring property on two previous ocassions)."

When we arrived there was no hot water. This was dealt with promptly but it made me question how the property had been cleaned within knowing there was no hot water. I later found a comment in the visitors book from early June and they also had no hot water. Crockery was not clean (mugs tea stained, glasses cloudy) cutlery was not clean and some kitchen utensils were rusty. There was also cobwebs all over the property indicating a full clean had not been completed. The information in the folder provided was out of date or just incorrect (eg it stated that rubbish would be collected from the end of the drive on a Monday. I eventually figured out rubbish was collected in the village on a Thursday and we had to take the bins to the end of the lane. I never did work out when the recycling was collected. Also in the folder it stated there was a glass collection point at the village hall which is no longer there). I would like to comment that the builders next door caused us no problems at all. They were extremely quiet and very respectful. The property has a great location but appears tired and let down by the poor cleaning.

Thank you or passing on your comments. The hot water was working prior to your arrival and as soon as we were made aware of an issue during your stay this was rectified once a plumber attended. We are sorry to hear you are disappointed at the standard of cleanliness which we will pass onto the housekeeper in order to rectify going forwards. The welcome file has been updated and it is so appreciated that you raised this. We are glad that you enjoyed the location, we are rather fond of it ourselves. Property Owner

  • "It was our second visit to the cottage this year."

I did notice some areas were looking a bit shabby and appliances were not working well- dishwasher/microwave. A good deep clean wouldn’t go a miss, probably been a busy Summer. Had a wonderful week away though.

  • "The kitchen crockery had been through the dishwasher but there was residue in some of the mugs requiring washing."

shelves above cooker were dirty and not cleaned before we arrived. No blind in the kitchen window which made it hot when sun shone later in the day, also unable to open the kitchen windows as locks worn and key would not work. Cooker was dirty and apart from heating something up we did not use it. Kitchen could do with a good clean on sufaces. The pillows when we stripped the beds on leaving were very stained and not aceptable. Cottage was in a good position with a secure garden for our dog and good walks from the door. We felt that a good clean would make all the difference.

Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted to see that you overall enjoyed your stay and will look into the points you have rasied and get any issues rectified where necessary. We hope to welcome you back to 1 Grange Cottages again soon. Property Owner

  • "As you know there were a few scratch points - Underfloor heating not working properly."

The floors do not warm up (particularly the sitting room). This is vital in winter Cleanliness - bathroom in particular not cleaned very well. Loo brush really unpleasant. Duvets - only summer weight duvets in the twin bedroom. Kids were cold Heater - in the small upstairs bedroom is far too close to the wall to be able to see the temperature adjust. Needed opening with a screwdriver Otherwise the cottage is in a good location and has some nice features, but must be set up for winter use

Westleton is an idyllic village near the Suffolk coast, nestled between Southwold and Aldeburg and offers all the attributes you could hope for in a Suffolk village, with a village green complete with pond and ducks. The village is easily accessible from the local train station at Darsham approximately two miles away. The village has a store, a bookshop where you can also enjoy a tea or coffee whilst browsing, an old fashioned garage, as well as two pubs, The White Horse Inn and The Westleton Crown, one of Suffolk’s best traditional inns where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate held their first wedding anniversary. Every August, Westleton hosts the infamous Barrel Rolling Fair where contestants have to roll barrels down the Village Green using a pole, and the men have to roll the barrel back up the hill too. Barrels are supplied and all are welcome to join in! The local Emmerdale Farm Shop and Butchery as well as a tea shop is approximately a mile away. The area is a haven for nature lovers with Westleton Heath National Nature Reserve, Dunwich Forest, Dunwich Beach with its famous fish and chip shop located on the beach, and the RSPB Minsmere, all close by. The town of Saxmundham, 6 miles away, is located on the River Fromus, in the heart of Suffolk’s Heritage Coast and is well serviced with independent shops, supermarkets and a train station, as well as art galleries, a weekly market and a farmers’ market.
