About the location

BONAR BRIDGE

Dornoch 13 miles; Inverness 37 miles.

Bonar Bridge sits on an ancient fording point across the estuary that leads into the Dornoch Firth and dates from pre-historic times. Originally a ferry crossing and a fording point for cattle drovers, the first bridge was engineered by Thomas Telford and completed in 1812. Nearby historic Croick Church witnessed the Highland Clearances in the mid nineteenth century and messages scratched onto the windows of the church at the time are still visible today. Bonar Bridge is ideally placed to explore this region of Scotland. The Royal Burgh of Dornoch with its beaches and famous golf course is close at hand. The Falls Of Shin visitor centre with its waterfall, viewing platform, salmon leap, forest walks and restaurant is a half an hour’s drive. Salmon fishing and deer stalking are available locally and there is a spectacular range of flora and fauna to enjoy including buzzards, osprey, grey seals and golden eagles nearby.
