  • "We had such a lovely week in Cairnbaan."

... at first just me, my husband and our dog then later with our granddaughters too. The cottage is so cosy and well-appointed and the location is wonderful. The autumn colours were stunning. We had long walks by the canal, watching the locks being opened and closed for boats to travel along as they have done for over 200 years. We took wee trips out to Tarbert, Lochgilphead, Crinan, Oban and the amazing ancient sites around Kilmartin, including Dunadd. Pauline could not have been more welcoming and helpful. We will definitely be going back.

ThNK you so much for your lovely feedback and also the photographs whilst you were out on your walks with the dog and grandchildren - you certainly caught the colours of the leaves just as they were falling. I am really pleased that you managed to fit in all your planned activities with the grandchildren and also attend the Mod in Oban - you would have wanted a holiday when you got home. Thanks again for stayine and look forward to having you all back again Property Owner

Immaculately clean and cosy. Its location by the canal is ideal for walks along the towpath or drives out to local villages. Perfect for visiting the Kilmartin archaeological landscape, which includes rock carvings, standing stones, stone circles, cairns, barrows and henges. Pauline, the owner, is very helpful and provides lots of information.

Thank you so much for your fantastic feedback - which is really appreciated especially after the very wet weather you had during your stay - which mans you will just have to make a return visit to see what Argyll has to offer in the sun Hope to see you again Property Owner

She was very apologetic about the garden being a wee bit over grown which was out of her control due to the bad weather for a few weeks , we we're still able to sit out and enjoy when the sun was out . The cottage was well equipped, the log burner made it very cosy on a couple of chilli evenings . The cottage is well situated for walks along the canal and surrounding area . Thank you Pauline we enjoyed our stay we will be back . Sally

Many thanks Sally for your lovely feedback which is appreciated and I am pleased that you managed to get a few rays of the sun. The log burner is a great asset to that cottage and does tend to heat the whole house and I have had feedback saying that once banked up it can last throughout the full stay Hope to have you all back again Property Owner

We really appreciated the top spec kitchen and bathroom. For us the bed was a bit soft, and the sofa not very comfortable but this did not detract from our stay at all, and we loved the walks straight from the door, and the peaceful little garden. We’d definitely stay again! Thanks Pauline, a great host, with useful suggestions and excellent communication.

Katherine, Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review, which is really apprciated. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay at the cottage and also enjoyed the surrounding areas and I do hope that you will be back again - maybe in a different season to see the changes in the colours Thanks again Property Owner

Ideal to watch beavers a couple of miles down the road. The boat trip to see wildlife and Corryvreckan is a good and although nature cannot be booked to appear when we want did see porpoise, white tailed eagles, deer and feral goats. Great base for a couple but would be cosy for manageable for more. Having it's own parking spot was lovely.

Many thanks David for your great response - greatly appreciated and it was a pleasure having you. Please remember to come back - this time you will have a brand new kitchen Haste ye back Pauline Property Owner

  • "This is a lovely, little cottage on a very picturesque canal."

There is a wood- burning stove, which kept us very cosy, as we were there in January. The cottage has everything you would need, and the water was piping hot for baths. Beds were comfy and the area peaceful and quiet. The surrounding area is beautiful. There is a hotel close by with good food (the fish pie was excellent!) The town of Lochgilphead has several gift shops and the views of the loch are a delight. There is also a swimming pool. Nearby Ardrishaig has a terrific cafe and is the start of the canal. The canal towpath takes you to Crinan. Bikes can be hired at Crinan Cycles in Lochgilphead. The canal stretches through beautiful countryside and is very well maintained. Crinan has a very picturesque canal basin and the views across Crinan Loch to Duntroon are breathtaking. This area is known for its ancient sites, cairns, carvings and standing stones. Other places to visit nearby are Tayvallich (with a great pub/ restaurant) , Kilmartin (museum and pub), Dunadd Fort ( ancient hill fort ), Crinan Ferry ( beach and walks) , Carnasserie Castle ( ancient ruin) , Tarbert ( picturesque port with lovely shops and cafes), Skipness ( the Seafood Shack has wonderful, fresh seafood) and Ardfern ( pub and terrific cafe). Near Tayvallich the nature reserve at Taynish has great walks and Keils Chapel is well worth a look. Near Tarbert, Stonefield Castle Hotel does good food with stunning views and Kilberry Inn has a well - deserved reputation for excellent cuisine. This is probably one of the loveliest areas in Scotland, and relatively undiscovered. You won't want to leave!

About the location

KILMARTIN

Crinan 7 miles; Lochgilphead 8 miles; Tarbert 21 miles; Oban 30 miles.

The village of Kilmartin sits at the heart of Kilmartin Glen, one of the most important prehistoric sites on the Scottish mainland. In the area there are rock carvings, standing stones, burial cairns and the remains of the Iron-Age fort at Dunadd, the home of the first kings of Scotland. Kilmartin is home to a church, pub, a castle and the Kilmartin House Museum with visitor centre next door, housing a café. The town of Lochgilphead is eight miles away, offering a good selection of cafes and small shops selling a range of goods, foods and crafts, while the village of Inveraray, home to the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, is within driving distance. Close by is Crinan Canal, which is surrounded by the stunning scenery of Argyll and Bute. From end to end the canal is nine miles long, and its sheltered waters make it an ideal place for beginners and the more experienced paddlers to explore. There are beautiful walks to be enjoyed throughout the area from Kilmichael Forest, to those at Port Ann and Dunardry and up over the hill from the stoney beach at Crinan Ferry, from where you can look out over Jura and north towards Mull. A trip to the Scottish Beaver Trail in Knapdale Forest also provides a fun family day out, plus the fishing village of Tarbert gives you superb access to all the ferry points across Kintyre that travel to Gigha, Arran, Islay and Portavadie.
