A lovely, quiet location with incredible views. The kids loved the garden and saying hello to the neighbouring horses. The pool table was an obvious hit in the light and airy (massive) lounge. It had everything we needed to cook, with loads of great eating out options within 30 minutes drive when you prefer to be lazy. A very relaxing stay in a brilliant location and cottage.

Beautiful location; excellent property with all necessary amenities; very helpful and knowlegable owners; the location is excellent for touring and hiking the local area; for those unfamiliar with Skye it is somewhat remote for other areas and hikes; because of traffic and single lane rds can take 1-2 hours to get to other locations, so plan accordingly; of course you can always sit in the sun room and gaze at the Sound of Sleat and the beatiful mountains beyound

You can easily explore the whole island, I highly recomend starting from Portree, heading north to Brodaig, then turn left onto the pass, the road takes you through a gorge unique in the UK, utterly stunning but beware, you will want to turn artound and drive it again imediately when you reach the end. Then (once you compleye Skye) take a trip accross the bridge to explore one of the most scenic parts of the NC500 rouut, the pass over the mountain to Applecross where their fish and chips are the best ever and the scanery is incredible, I recomend a round trip via Sheildaig to return to Skye, allow a full day but beware, the pub is closed on Tuesday and opens again at 5PM on Wednesday. The cottage itslf is great and any issues reported are fixed imediately, we were unfortunate to arrive the the antenna cable for the TV was broken, fixed next day. Only issue is headroom in the bedrooms, getting up in the night for a touilet run usually resulted in a few bumps and swear words, but this does add to the charm.

Also, the owner supplied directions as you near the cottage tell you to turn right at the red mailbox. Actually, you turn right at the second. This was a wonderful and ideal location for us. • "Bathroom downstairs difficult for older people at night."

Steep bedroom ceilings make it difficult for tall people to get into one side of double bed! Pool table in front of picture window would be better at end of room, it spoils view from sofa! No garden furniture to enjoy view from garden. Difficulty in getting radiators to warm up, no instructions other than they are set. Dishwasher filled with water and stopped. Informed Sykes but no response! Also no instructions. Apart from all this above the two of us had a good stay as it was well provided for, though towels small and it is a 30 minute walk to pub!

Dear Guest, We are glad you enjoyed your stay in our cottage. We welcome all feedback, but wish to clarify and address a few of your points for accuracy. The cottage maintains a traditional layout with the bathroom downstairs. I am sure you will agree there is no other place the bathroom could be in Solas. If the bathroom was upstairs, this would cause equal inconvenience for those wishing to use the bathroom during the day. The traditional sloping ceilings in the bedrooms are stated on the website before booking. The pool table, and any other table in the cottage can be easily moved by guests if they so wish. This is occasionally the case when guests wish to further enjoy the stunning views. We are sorry you did not feel you had the authority to move the table. There is no garden furniture but the oak/glass sliding doors open fully so guests can fully enjoy the view in a unique and special way. The supply of bath and hand towels for guests is standard and it is unfortunate these were not large enough for you. The towels are all standard sizes from The White Company and John Lewis. I hope you return to Skye to enjoy more of the delights of island in the future. Property Owner

It is in a beautiful location and the views from the garden and within the property are absolutely wonderful! Solas is most comfortable and well furnished throughout. The kitchen is spacious and well resourced, including a washing machine and micro wave. The lounge has to be seen to be believed! The room is vast, and has panoramic views of the loch and distant mountains. Most comfortable sitting areas and a marvellous folding door. It includes a super sized smart televison with speakers on either side and a pool table that was great fun to use during our stay. The garden is fairly secluded and overlooks a paddock with two horses as well as the panoramic views. The bedrooms both have a sloping roof but are most comfortable and also have windows with superb views. Plenty of parking space in the front of the garden which is situated down a pleasant quiet lane. We wished that we could have stayed longer and will definitely book to stay again. • "Unfortunately we were very disappointed with the view from Solas, which are described as "wonderful panoramic views accross the sea" and Breath taking views"."

We do not think this is a true representation of the photographs provided and sadly clouded our enjoyment of the cottage. The view is good while standing on the driveway but internally it is not the wider expansive view that is depicted in the photographs. Currently the view is partly obscured by foliage. Sadly, we feel this is misleading. I booked this property for my husbands 60th birthday based on the lovely view shown in the property specifications and while there were positive aspects of the property they were overshadowed by this misrepresentation. This is the fourth holiday home we have hired in Scotland and all three previous properties had truely beautiful views, accurately described. On a positive note, the property was very clean and warm. We enjoyed sitting by the stove in the comfortable sofas and the doors provided a good amount of light for such an old building. The kitchen was well equipped, the bed was comfortable and the bedding was of good quality. Arriving on the Island after 6pm and trying to find the cottage in the pitch black and heavy rain, was quite difficult as there is no sign to indicate which property was 'Solas' as has been provided by other properties (this has been mentioned by other guests). The drive in October was muddy and very slippy (as mentioned by other guests).

Cottage didn’t have Sky TV but had an excellent smart TV with really good WIFI access. Hotel was a mile away but on a dark night was too far and steep to walk back from. • "The cottage exceeded our expectations and was much more spacious than we anticipated."

It has been refurbished to a very high standard and is very warm and cosy without any hint of damp as often experienced in very old properties. The kitchen was very well equipped and we self catered without any difficulty at all with the essential dishwasher making a big difference like at home! The beds were very comfortable and we did not find the sloping ceilings to be an issue as expected in such a conversion of a traditional island cottage. The views across the sea to the Scottish Highlands were ever changing and stunning and I have never been anywhere as quiet and peaceful. The path to the front of the cottage from the parking area needs some improvement but this is a minor issue crushed by all the positives! Well worth the drive from the South of England.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at Solas."

The cottage is old and charming, and well equipt. The village is lovely and only a short walk away, with a great local pub. The views from the cottage are stunning! (they're better from the garden as some large trees obstruct the view to the left from the living room). On the first night we found that the mattress in the smaller bedroom was very uncomfortable, the springs on one side had collapsed and it caused a very bad night's sleep. We reported this to Joanne, the owner, who went to great lengths to fix it. She brought a brand new bed and mattress topper. We couldn't be happier with the way she handled this issue. Our only criticism is that there's no garden furniture, we would have spent more time ouside in the evenings had there been somewhere to sit, this would have enhanced the experience. But overall we had an amazing time!

There’s spider egg sacks everywhere in the cottage , also flies . There’s cracked tiles , the sink is lose in the bathroom, the shower is shocking bad . The cottage felt dated and tired , defo needs a make over . And a lot repairs . The fact it’s advertised with the sea views it should have and doesn’t , is basically false publication . Not happy with this one at all , wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unless it was half the price of what I paid !!!!

Dear Mr Manley, Thank you for your feedback, however after reading your comments we needed to confirm that you had even stayed at Solas. If you could not see the sea from the cottage, I fear you may have been looking to the back of the property instead of through the large glass doors, windows and garden at the front. “Regarding flora, I hope you will agree that it would be highly unethical to destroy trees, shrubs or plants which are not on our land and do not belong to us, to allow you to have views to your precise liking. However, if you have any evidence that the property did not have sea views, please share this with us as we do not understand how this can be the case.” The “flies” you refer to are likely to be midges, which at this time of year may enter any property on Skye without invitation. As for cracked tiles and a loose sink, I can assure you this was not the case before your stay at the cottage. The property is carefully checked every week for damage. The décor in Solas should have come as no surprise after viewing pictures on the website. Many thanks, The owners of Solas. Property Owner

Cottage was comfortable and we enjoyed our stay. Good pub/ hotel 1.1 miles away so a good 20 mins walk - not the 9 min walk suggested. Enjoyed couple of meals there - very friendly staff and good food. Facilities at the cottage were ok - dryer was not working so needs repairing and we felt that would’ve been helpful as it was rainy rather than a note to say it was broken. Kitchen needs an upgrade in terms of cooking facilities and utensils like knives, cooking utensils were blunt or not useful. Some kitchen basics would’ve been helpful eg foil, salt/pepper etc. Upstairs Main bedroom Velux window needed a repair as could not leave it open at night.

Our happiness at arriving at the cottage was enhanced by the fantastic location and views and the converted barn room was out of this world. Thanks so much to the owners for the concept and design of the space with the large window overlooking the crofts, lochs and highlands beyond. The high ceiling, original artworks, fireplace and comfortable seating all added a sense of specialness and cultural sophistication. Towel rail hanging off wall and tripped all power when switched on. Dirty pans. Floor around toilet filthy. Loved Skye. The cottage was really nice just not maintained. Loved the people we met.

Thank you for your feedback. Please be assured that we do very much care about our property and do whatever we can to ensure the property standards are maintained. We were unaware of the clothes airer being broken, we will of course order a new one though we do also have a washing line outside that guests can use. The oven knob was unfortunately broken by a previous guest, we have ordered a new part that sadly hadn't arrived for your stay. The dirt around the toilet is actually some discoloration of the grout.
