  • "It would have been nice for the heating to have been switched on when we arrived given you cannot get into the property until 5pm, as it was very cold on arrival."

We had to report that the extractor hood was filthy on arrival resulting in us having to clean it before use. It had clearly not been cleaned for some time. We later found the oven was also not clean. I texted the ranger to report it but did not receive a reply so contacted Sykes directly. Helen was great and reported the issues raised. Appropriate compensation was received. Otherwise house very comfortable and well equipped.

Superb locally relevant artwork and decoration. There is URGENT need to provide proper updated details on bin collection. Some bins are collected every 4 weeks, some every two, but which dates? To tell people to take all bins out every week is ABSURD. Please provide a helpful calendar. Please also provide a new bird table. Most people here love wildlife and the old one is disintegrating. These easily rectifiable matters aside, the place is superb. Well done NTS.

We have added the bin calendar in the cottage, the local council have in the past few months changed all the recycling and non recycling bins which has caused some confusion for all residents in the Highlands. Our Ranger has also sorted out the bird table in the garden. Property Owner

  • "We had a wonderful week at Glen Cottage."

The cottage is quaint, beautifully decorated and furnished, and so well cared for by the Trust staff. We spent our days exploring the region, taking long walks and some longer hikes. Fishing for Brown Trout on the Coulin Estate (about a 10 minute drive east of the cottage was grand); Neil, the estate’s game keeper arranged it for us. We enjoyed a few evenings at the Torridon Hotel pub, but preferred to sit on the lawn in front of the cottage soaking in the beauty of this special place. We plan to return again, but next time our visit will be longer.

There is really nice attention to detail on the interior design, which makes it feel really luxurious. Importantly, all the basics are covered: it is really warm and draught proof. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer (yes, you've guessed, it was cold, wet and windy for our stay). The crockery is lovely and plenty is provided. There is a dishwasher. The knives are high quality and sharp (almost unheard of in holiday accommodation). The kitchen is very well equipped (the stick blender was really appreciated). The bedrooms are really big and luxurious. The garden is big and enclosed and perfect for dogs.

  • "I want to start by saying we had a lovely time in Torriodon while at Glen Cottage."

The house was almost perfect in every way for our family holiday. It was clean, very warm and comfortable, and in an amazing location. However, the kitchen and dining area are of the biggest concern; not enough plates (one setting), cutlery (one setting), and not even a full set of each glass size and type and also light on some basic kitchen utensils, which meant washing everything after every meal time or putting the dishwasher on every day, which is not environmentally friendly, especially when there is so much focus within the house to recycle. Additionally, a better solution for glass and bottle recycling should be found rather than guests having to drive into the village to deposit empty bottles there. Lastly, the TV was a real issue; we did watch it a lot due to the weather (Storm Noa), but we could not get the Freeset service to work and relied heavily on Netflix, Amazon and BBC I player. I would like to finish by saying we would book again as the above issues have not out us off from returning, and the above would only be a small investment, and if it weren't for these issues, our trip would have been a perfect dream holiday.

Many thanks for your feedback. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay at Glen Cottage and hope we can welcome you back on another occasion. We have discussed your comments with the Property Manager and are taking steps to replenish the kitchen as quickly as possible. Best NTS Holidays Team Property Owner

However, disappointed would be the best description. Bear in mind the cottage caters for 6 guests. Only three tumblers suitable for juice etc Spud pealer keeps falling apart Had to wash wok and glasses before using No book with instructions had to call someone to get tv working Extractor fan greasy 4 soup bowls, 5 cereal bowls Sharp knives could not cut through hot butter. Found food blender, blade in on cupboard, bowl in another motor in a third. When we found one part assumed it was the remains of a broken device. One pyrex mixing bowl one serving bowl No where to dry washing Kitchen scales not working The property details says you can find various eateries in Achnasheen for an evening meal, if you go to Achnasheen and use google maps for restaurants, it sends you to Torridon, where the two main restaurants are closed to non residents or onto Lochcaron which is a 45 minute drive. OK its not National Trusts fault that local places were closed or not serving food, but the cottage is remote, so having the ability to prepare food and eat at the cottage would be an advantage The towels, were lets just say, tired. On positive notes, we told the local man that the tap in the kitchen was loose, there was a leak under the sink and as mentioned could not work the tv, all addressed swiftly and efficiently. The lack of hot water in the main bathroom was not sorted. The bedding and beds very comfortable. The location, isolated but fab. We had deer in the garden, eagles at the back of the house. Disappointed remains the best description

Many thanks for your feedback and we are sorry that you were disappointed with your stay at Torridon. Our property manager is checking the inventory in the kitchen to ensure there is the correct amount of glasses and bowls. We will go over the standards expected in the cottage with the cleaning team and we will reinforce that the kitchen items must be checked and servicable. The Tv was on BBC Alba which doesn't transmit all day so glad to read that was easily sorted. The plumber was called out but he couldn't access the cottage as the key hadn't been left. • "On our arrival the refrigerator contained food debris and needed washing."

The dishwasher was loaded and required emptying. We expected that this should have been accomplished by cleaning staff, given the late access time of 1700 hrs ( earliest). The wood burner in the sitting room was full of screwed up baking foil, dirty wet wipes, egg shells (??) and cardboard on top of half burnt logs. The fire screen was black with soot and the hearth dirty with ash. The outside waste bin was so full the lid could not be closed. The other aspects were satisfactory except to describe the upper shower room as a bathroom was a stretch - it is a shower room for a short person.

The weather was mixed but we did sit out in the garden at some point every day. We saw a golden Eagle from the garden and a seal on the coastal walk. Take lots of bird food and you will get many different species visiting the bird table and feeders. The scenery is amazing and Applecross is well worth the hair raising drive. The cottage is warm and comfortable with nice furnishings. The kitchen is generally well equipped but really needs more glasses, dishes and plates, particularly if you are a larger group, we were only two. Some serving dishes would also be useful. The midges were not too bad whilst we were there. The property is very close to the NC500 route so the road in front of the property is much busier than we expected with lots of motor homes and motorbikes passing. Tesco will do a click and collect to the community centre which is useful.

Girls complained about lack of clothes hangers for their ball dresses, and general shortage of plates and glasses. Guys complained about poor Internet, sad folks. There is an inexpensive solution to the Internet issue. Get a Vodafone mobile broadband 4G hotspot - cheaper than your BT landline deal, and you do have a good 4G signal if you place the device in the right place, e.g. the porch or upstairs. Hope to come back some day!

Glad you enjoyed your stay, we will look at the amount of crockery and glassware at the next changeover. Not sure that ballgowns and walking boots are going to catch on! As I am sure you are aware Glen Cottage is in a remote part of the Highlands, quite a distance from the nearest exchange and surrounded by mountains. As a charity we have to use our income wisely for all our properties throughout Scotland and supplying an expensive satellite broadband is outwith our means at this point in time. • "'Spend an afternoon relaxing in the enclosed garden, enjoying the serene setting and perhaps even spotting the passing local wildlife, such as deer, otters and golden eagles."

' The property is so overgrown with long grass and ferns meaning that the air is so humid that the midge population is overwhelming, totally unlike anywhere else we have experienced during our two and a half weeks in Scotland. Within a few moments of exiting the house one is completely surrounded by biting midges. It means that the gardens of the house are completely unusable and also one is forced to live inside with the windows closed. This of course is not advisable in coronavirus times. Whilst at the cottage a member of the National trust did call me and I talked about the midge problem. She agreed that the gardens have not been cut for quite some time and are overgrown. We think that it is totally unacceptable to advertise this cottage as a holiday let with a garden when the garden cannot be enjoyed or used at all. It is very disappointing and we await your response to this and suggest some compensation might be in order.

Glen Cottage has mature woodland surrounding it which can lead to the right conditions for midges at certain times of year with the right weather conditions. This mature woodland as well as having conservation value also provides screening from the road which reduces road noise and also provides more privacy to the cottage. The midges seem to be late this year and hadn’t really been an issue until now, which may be why you didn’t have an issue at your other locations. Having spoken to the person I believe they apologised for the fact the grass hadn’t been cut due to staff shortages which I am sure you can sympathise with in these current times. I can assure you if the grass had been cut it would not have reduced the number of midges. That is dependent on the time of year and the weather conditions at the time. Thank you for your feedback, we hope to see you again. Property Owner
