The cottage is very well equipped, cosy and spotlessly clean. A lot of love has gone into the house, you can tell. The views are spectacular and location perfect to unwind and enjoy peace and tranquility. The owners are very helpful and I would absolutely love to return here.

  • "Great location, remote but within a car journey of a small village and a ferry port to Tobermory."

The house was nicely equipped, unfortunately the shower broke on the Wednesday and hadn’t been fixed by our departure on Saturday. But we appreciate it’s difficult to get things fixed or replaced quickly in a remote location. Also, not convinced that the heater in the corridor was working at all. Pretty sure I’d read there was a pub a mile away, certainly was a bit further than that via the single tracked roads, probably about 15-20 mins away by car. One suggestion would be to make the fence a bit more solid as one of our dogs disappeared and had gone into the field next door, she’s a small Jack Russell Terrier and must have squeezed through, had she gone into the undergrowth we wouldn’t have spotted her. Had to keep her on her lead for the rest of the holiday. But overall we loved our stay and would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a stay with peace and quiet and solitude.

Addressing a couple of the issues of earlier reviewers - there is a dog waste bin near to the property, though the sign on it has faded, and it is only a couple of minutes to the beach but you need to find the shortcut beside neighbouring cottages. The freezer drawers were a bit of a nightmare, I’d say they’ve been damaged at some point. The one thing that annoyed me was that Sykes provided a “number not available” as the contact number for the owner. My dogs and I had a lovely break in Mary’s House (pity the photo and information about Mary were missing)

Spent time down in the bay watching the local seals and other wildlife.did a boat trip with staffa tours which was excellent. Went to tobermoray from kilochan as foot passengers, beautiful place to visit.last 2 days of our visit the weather was fantastic. Was nice chatting to a couple of locals too. We stocked up on food in fort william on our way to marys house so didn't really need to visit kilochan ferry stores. Outstanding views from the house and garden, amazing night skies too. We're really going to miss this special place . Thank you marys house for such an amazing holiday.

  • "Mary's House was our home away from home for two weeks."

We felt welcome the moment we arrived and what was without a doubt the most spotless property we have stayed in (and we have stayed in quite a few). The bed was comfortable and we slept like babies, the shower was hot and powerful, the woodburning stove helped us stay warm on stormy, rainy, cold days and the kitchen allowed for the cooking of more than just the basic pasta or jacket potatoes. The view was breathtaking and we were lucky enough to regularly see eagles circling above our heads. The bird feeder attrackted all sorts of other small birds, finches of all kinds and colours, blackbirds, robins, doves, you name it. The coastline we saw from our windows was spectacular and ever-changing with the light and even on the days where the weather was too bad to go outside, we felt like we had a front row from where we could see all the beauty and the surprises Mother Nature had in store for us. The last roughly 2 hours drive to Mary's House are single track road and it's certainly not for people who are going everywhere in a hurry. But we found that using the passing places worked very well and all the drivers we "met" on this remote corner of the world were as relaxed as we were and everyone went out of their way to let the oncoming party pass. We highly recommend stocking up on "fancy" groceries in Fort William before you take the Corran Ferry. Everything else is readily available in The Ferry Stores in Kilchoan, they even offer to deliver a welcome hamper to the house with content of your choice if you let them know a few days prior to your arrival. We had initially booked our stay in 2020, but due to Covid we had to rebook twice. The owner as well as Sykes cottages were extremely helpful and supportive, and rebooking was no issue. We loved every minute we spent at Mary's House and we are grateful for the wonderful experience. We would love to come back some day.

Stay was great, we’ve stayed next door at dondies house for the last 6 years and this was a big step up in quality, only downsides where a half empty box of tablets found under the bed by our dog chewing them and finally we where only left one bin bag for a 12 day stay, we know it was self catering but you never expect to have to provide them and the remoteness of the property and proximity to the nearest shop just made it abit of a niggle Overall very pleased

I've only just noticed my original response to your feedback did not post so please accept my apologies for the late response. Please accept my sincere apologies. Reading your feedback I was horrified at the thought of what the consequences could have been in regards to your dog chewing the tablets found under the bed. I have spoken with the person responsible for the changeover that day and she assures me that this incident was a one off oversight on her behalf and will most certainly not be repeated. I can fully understand your niggle at only one bin liner being left. There should have been two, which is usually the case regardless of the duration of your stay. I was delighted to read you enjoyed your stay and overall you were very pleased with Marys House. I do hope you'll return one day and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and spectacular views we offer. Once again please accept my sincere apologies. Kind Regards Donna Cameron Property Owner

The bedroom has extra blankets if needed and a hot water bottle under the sink which is a lovely touch. Bear in mind the heating is electric storage heaters so can be a little temperamental. Bear in mind that low cars might struggle going down to the cottage a bit. Sanna bay nearby is beautiful as is the bay that you can see from the windows, but be careful of quick sand! We also went over to Mull on one of the days which was absolutely beautiful, the ferry is around £29 return ticket and the first one leaves at 8am - there is a fab cafe right by the ferry terminal on Mull, fantastic fish chips and scallops - cash only though. You will need to get the Corran ferry if coming from the South, this will cut off around an hour of your journey so look into this before you leave out - this cost about £10. There was coal provided by the owners included in the rent which was fantastic as we really needed the fire on a cold and wintery January week. Make sure you bring some bird seed as the bird table gets very busy if you stock it up and there are some great binoculars on the windowsill! From the excitement of driving down the track and pulling up outside the cottage, to driving away, my daughter and I couldn't believe our luck! What a gem of a place. We were blessed with a week of glorious weather and the scenery of turquoise waters and beautiful mountains every day, was stunning. The cottage is clean, cozy and beautifully equipped, with a comfortable bed, fantastic shower and the washing machine which was a boon. We stopped at Salen on the way for a light lunch, and then only came off the peninsula once to visit old favourites, Tioram Castle, Ardtoe Sands and then walked to the singing sands, all on the same day. We walked to Sanna and lazed on the beach, also Bay MacNeil which is equally stunning in a different way. Took a trip over to Tobermory, (catch the ferry from Kilchoan only 4 miles away) browsed the shops and ate ice-cream which was divine! We weren't lucky enough to see any marine life that day but the other wild life made up for it. Eagles, birds a plenty, pine martins, and deer. We did see seals in the bay on our first evening but the visiting yacht's in the bay may have put them off the rest of the week. If you like birds, be sure to take bird seed with you as there is a bird table in the garden. A visit to the lighthouse is well worth it and you will get a wonderful greeting from the lighthouse collie. Also the fish and chips were lovely at the Kilchoan hotel as was the warm welcome. The sunsets as ever, were stunning and its possible to see a lot of the Hebridean islands from your garden! I simply cannot wait to go back. Everything was clean, especially the bathroom and kitchen which were immaculate. The bed is very comfortable with was a nice surprise. All in all a lovely holiday - we enjoyed it so much we've already booked for next summer!

  • "We have been staying in Portuairk for 23 years and it was our first visit to this cottage, which was really lovely with superb and far reaching views."

However, I did find it to be "a bit of a squeeze" for myself and my three 'children' (17, 18 & 23), despite the listing saying it "accommodates four".......fortunately, the weather was reasonably dry, so we weren't confined to the cottage and it wouldn't deter us from booking again, although not next year as it is obviously popular and already fully booked. The fenced off garden was very much appreciated by our dog and the picnic table enabled us to sit outside while enjoying the fair weather and great views. However, I do feel that, as the track to the cottage is now quite bad (it was a little better in 2013 when we stayed at Borve House), that potential guests should be made aware of this as it is not really very good for the average car to drive on! Also, the two tracks down from the cottage towards the beach are not really suitable for anyone who is not sure-footed, so this should also be made clear on the listing. In addition, the local information on the listing (and on others in the same area) will need to be amended as the nearest pub/restaurant is now 3 miles away in Kilchoan because the Sonachan Hotel is now a private residence. I hope this feedback has been helpful, thank you.

It was lovely to have the heaters on so it was warm and the bed was comfy. A drier would be A Good idea for when folks get wet clothes. More comfortable living room furniture would be an improvement. The bird feeders in the garden are really well used and a delight. Please ask new holidaymakers to bring a big bag of bird seed and suet because there are lots of birds and there is no where to buy any food for them.

  • "Mary's House was far better than it appeared from the photos, not enough was mentioned about the fantastic views and certainly the photos did not reflect this."

The photos of the inside of the cottage did not show it to be as nice as it was, it was far better than we expected. The cottage was really clean, spacious and well equipped, had everything we needed and the kitchen was really well stocked with utensils. The bedroom was nice and large and the bed so comfortable. The location had stunning views and there were many lovely walks to do around the area. It was quiet and peaceful.

Very tranquil and stunning location with amazing unrivalled scenery and staying in a lovely cottage that has everything you could possibly want. Property was warm and inviting and the views from the kitchen and bedroom windows were second to none. It was nice to waken up to the scene of a pale white sandy beach surrounded lapped by clear turquoise water every day.

  • "This was by far the most enjoyable holiday we had in years."

Took us a bit of time to find as we arrived rather late in the day. The views are to die for. Wonderful walks for the adventurous and the leisure walks. All facilities you need fairly close. If you want to breakaway totally from the huzzle and buzzle of day to day humdrum this is definitely for you. We had the best 10 days and feels totally rejuvenated. Our Alaskan Malamute had fun being able to go to the beach, mountain walks or just lying outside the cottage looking out at the sea. Cosy cottage, heating definitely not a problem. Wood burner at night is the best for staying warm and toasty. Just the right size for the 2 of us.

The only thing we would ask Sykes Cottages to consider is the charge for using a credit card to book the holiday on-line - this is an increasingly out-of-date policy which the majority of organisations no longer apply.

About the location

KILCHOAN

Tobermory 7 miles (via ferry).

The pretty village of Kilchoan is the most westerly village in mainland Britain, situated on the stunning Ardnamurchan Peninsula and surrounded by magnificent mountains and breathtaking coastal views. The area close to Kilchoan offers a choice of quiet sandy beaches and an abundance of wildlife with eagles regularly spotted overhead. Until 1900 the village was only accessible by sea, but now access is via a single track road that leads through some of the most beautiful scenery in Scotland. The village has good local services including a shop, pub, restaurant and community centre. From Mingary Pier there is a regular ferry service across the Sound of Mull to Tobermory which gives the opportunity to explore the islands of Mull and Iona. There are wildlife excursions on land and sea and the new Ardnamurchan Distillery and Natural History Centre are added attractions. A short drive away is Ardnamurchan Point complete with its own lighthouse and visitor centre which is well worth a visit, or perhaps you simply want to sit on the glorious Sanna Beach and enjoy the views across the clear blue sea to the islands of Muck, Eigg and Rum?
