  • "My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our week in Wellberry cottage and a lovely surprise welcome package awaited us of fresh flowers, milk, butter, bread, cheese etc."

We were so grateful and appreciated Mr. and Mrs. Hodgson's warm welcome (even asking if we needed any help with our luggage). Wellberry is a beautiful bungalow which suited us very well being both disabled. The kitchen also very well stocked. Everything was exceptionally clean and tidy. We have no complaints whatsover, infact I asked Helen if we could stay next year and she was delighted. I was born near Staindrop, not far from Ingleton and usually visit each year to see life-long friends, so definitely we will book again for Wellberry. Thank you, Miriam

  • "Nice quiet location near a farm."

Uncluttered view across fields. The property had everything we needed for 5 family staying in 3 rooms. Unfortunately my 2 inlaws could only join us for one night of the seven due to sudden family illness. Only improvement needed is better kitchen worktop illumination so you can see what you are doing. Steam shower control panel locked up a couple of times. Had to reset circuit breaker at the consumer unit. (Retired electronic engineer). The underfloor heating kept the cottage extremely comfortable. A good week exploring Yorkshire and Durham. Ideal location or visiting new improvements at Shildon Locomotion, Preston Park and Beamish with Bicentenary celebrations in 2025.

  • "The cottage was extremely clean, spacious, welcoming and warm."

Very well equipped with everything we needed and more. The beds were comfortable and the shower was powerful and hot. The welcome pack of fresh bread, milk, cheese and butter was thoughtful. Fantastic views from the cottage, great dark skies too. A great base for travelling around the north-east and further a field. Thank you for a great stay.

Cows came to visit us over the wall. A mouse also came to visit, which upset the ladies, but the owner will sort that with a trap. Would highly recommend.

  • "This cottage has so much potential but is just letting itself down."

Cleanliness is poor. Dust on all surfaces, terrible shower room floor (pebbled and dirty which is dangerous and slippy). Loads of faults such as toaster didnt work, shower screen flapping around as its not secured on the runners, broken drawers in the freezer. We were also bombarded with flies (I know its a farm but this was off the scale). Sofas old and dated with feather pillow cushions on as well. I have taken lots of pictures and happy to supply of needed. I wont book with Sykes again on the basis of this cottage. We paid £800 for a week here which should be a luxury cottage. Ive stayed in better cleaner caravans. Very poor!

  • "Very peaceful cottage in the middle of nowhere."

Unfortunately as it is near fields, there were a lot of flies and moths around. The kitchen was well equipped, but it would have been nice to have the salt and pepper pots filled, as they were empty. There were a few loose towel hooks and the shower door handle was loose. The shower was intermittent as the water ran freezing water a few times, but this may have been because the water boiler was broken, as was explained to us when we arrived. I'm glad I remembered my ear plugs as the boiler ran all night, sounding like the washing machine was on full spin! Overall this was a lovely big house, with plenty space.

  • "Fabulous location for exploring - just what we wanted!"

Fabulous facilities in the house especially in the kitchen. The house was a brilliant size and the views were amazing! We loved our stay here, however, it does need a bit of TLC e.g. sealant replacing and new bed frames needed - they have been repaired so much and now just creak and squeak which isn't great for getting sleep! The freezer drawers were broken too and a little annoying. Also there are so many flies in the house and no idea how they are getting in - some sort of screening so we could open a door and keep flies out would have been brilliant! These issues didn't detract from our holiday though and we had the best week! The bread, milk & cheese on arrival was lovely too! Would definitely recommend!

A nice base for the Pennines, County Durham and North Yorkshire. The Cottage was very clean and spacious with every convenience you would need for a week away. A nice touch was the welcome pack of cheese, home baked bread and butter provided by the owner. The only negative was the weather…..but that’s the UK in the summer for you !.

The accommodation was perfect for our 4 night stay. It was very well equipped and the mattresses and bed linen were good quality so had a super nights sleep! We didn’t meet the owner as the key was in a lockbox but if I needed anything I could have contacted her. Would 100% recommend this holiday cottage/farmhouse for anyone wanting a peaceful break away and enjoys walking and wants to explore Durham.

  • "We enjoyed a really lovely stay at Wellberry, the setting was perfect."

The kitchen was well equipped with everything you could think of and we loved the open planned living space. The bedrooms were a good size although the twin rooms would benefit with a bit more storage. The garden was perfect, more garden furniture would have been welcome as the stone set although looked lovely was not the most practical for relaxing and we would have liked a washing line.

A very nice pub was within walking distances that served wonderful Italian meals, unfortunately we could only eat outside due to Covid. We were fortunate with the weather and the garden enjoyed the sun all day. I would recommend that to benefit fully from the garden, relaxing chairs should be provided.

Plenty of space and comfortable sofas. Bedrooms equally comfortable. Only issue was that, as we like to cook on holiday, we expected the pots and pans to be clean, but quite a few still had some food on, so we ended washing everything, including plates and cutlery, just to be sure. I know that turn-round times on changeover days are short, but in these days of Covid-19, I feel that the priority should be on making sure that anything related to food, cooking, eating etc. should take priority. Other than that no complaints, and we had a really good rest despite the weather!

  • "Absolutely fabulous cottage."

Booked over Christmas for a family get together and it didn’t disappoint . The cottage itself is very well designed with an overall feeling of space. There were 4 adults and 3 children, aged 8,6 and 7 months and we were joined by 3 more adults and a 9 year old on Christmas Day and not once did it feel cramped. The boys loved the outdoor space. Then there are the extras. The Christmas tree and decorations were perfect and the welcome pack of milk, fresh bread, butter and cheese board were very appreciated. We have never stayed in such a well equipped cottage . The kitchen made Christmas dinner a breeze and the games/ jigsaws available kept everyone entertained until Father Christmas had been with their own toys. The real fire was lovely and the views felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. Best Christmas ever. Thank you!

Well equipped. Fantastic walking around virtually traffic free country lanes. Just could do with a more deep clean, several areas in the property like under sofa and bathrooms. Also little areas like light bulbs out handles loose in kitchen. Also plumbing in en suite made a loud noise every time you used the sink/toilet could do with a handy man around just doing little touch's here and there. We have stayed in several Sykes properties and they are normally spotless clean. But on a good note nice welcome from owner and bread, milk cheese in kitchen. Great log burner and the under floor heating is amazing the whole cottage lovely and warm.

  • "The accomodation was of a very high standard of decor and fit it also had lovely surroundings."

A couple of things took the gloss off it for us. Not everyone likes dogs, unfortunately the adjoining properties that have permanent residents have dogs and a few times during the week we got woke up very early in the morning by dogs barking. The dogs also hassled us when trying to get from the car to the cottage, and they also went to the toilet on the lovely lawn. If a dog is your best friend then this probably wont be a problem. In the accomodation the table runners in quite a few of the rooms were quite dusty, hence the reason we folded some of them up and didn't use them. In our opinion it looks as though rooms that hadn't been used recently may not have been dusted

About the location

STAINDROP

Barnard Castle 5 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the most grand in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains and a walled garden and 200 acre deer park add to the splendour. Staindrop has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes set round its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, plus of course its wide range of shops and tea rooms. Walkers will enjoy the many walks around Teesdale.
