  • "Another great stay at The Cote - our third visit with our three dogs!"

John (the owner) goes out of his way to make sure you have a lovely holiday. We always enjoy our stay, and dogs are happy to have the field nearby to run around, which is one of the perks of staying at the cottage. The Cote is perfectly located for exploring the Dales and the Pennines, which we very much enjoy. It’s a warm, comfortable place to stay, and we appreciate the peace and quiet. We will be returning next year!

It was spacious and every need was catered for. We felt it was particularly suitable for dog owners, with tiled floors on the ground floor, a stair gate to prevent dogs access to the upper floor, a dedicated paddock for free running and other options on the doorstep for countryside walks - making our stay easy and stress-free. A beautiful location with plenty to do in the area. We hope to return.

  • "We really enjoyed our stay at The Cote and we plan to return again later in the year if possible The cottage itself is beautiful."

Everything is finished to a high standard. The kitchen is really well equipped with all you need and the cooking utensils and pans were really high standard. The sofas in the living room were really comfy. Upstairs was beautiful too. The two back bedrooms were quite cool however there was a portable plug in radiator that worked really really quickly and soon sorted that. The field directly opposite the house was excellent for our dog to run. There were also loads of great walks just from the front door. Loads of sheep in nearby fields, one of which came right up to the kids and wanted stroking. The private play park was a huge hit with our daughter. We visited Valentines Restuarant (centre of Barnard Castle) on the last night and it was AMAZING. So 100% recommend trying there if you're looking for lovely food in a nice atmosphere. The only thing we would say that needs improvement is the road leading up to the cottage. The middle of the road was much higher than the sides so it kept dragging on the car and we were worried it would cause damage. The farmer did say that would be his next big job, to tarmac it. It wouldn't put us off returning but if you have a low car be very careful driving here. Overall absolutely beautiful cottage and surroundings. Very peaceful and would definitely like to return.

Im pleased you enjoyed your stay at The Cote. We have now removed the middle of the track leading to the property and a new tarmac road has been done. Property Owner

  • "We had a lovely time at The Cote."

It was perfect and in such a lovely location. John was very helpful and advised us of different walks with our dogs in the area. There are not many properties that would accommodate three dogs and we there was plenty of space for them (we brought a Great Dane, a Bearded Collie and a Toy Poodle). The kitchen was well equipped, the only thing we did find we could have used is foil (to keep the oven cleaner whilst cooking) but that is a very minor detail. We will definitely be staying again. Our only advice (and this isn’t related to the property) is that if you have a dog larger than a Labrador quite a few of the stiles were difficult to cross and had metal bars at the top as well as being quite steep.

After little panic and some searching we found The Cote advertised through Sykes, but were worried that it wasn't going to be a nice as the one previously booked. How wrong we were!! It was just superb! The photos on the website really do not do it any justice at all! The cottage was clean, very comfortable and had everything in it to make it feel like home from home. The kitchen/diner was well-equipped, bright and spacious. The lounge was comfortable and still had Christmas decorations in place which was an added surprise (as we had cleared ours away early at home to go on holiday). There were lovely views from the windows. The bed was very comfortable. There was an added benefit of a separate shower room and bathroom. There was a laundry area and downstairs toilet too. The thing that we noticed more than anything was how quiet it was inside. There was a violent storm outside on one night of our stay but we hardly heard anything from inside the cottage. We heard on the local news the next morning that most properties in the area had lost power, but that didn't affect the cottage so it must have been on a different supply. The cottage is lovely and warm which was great to go into as the weather was cold (expected in December/January). In fact we had to turn the thermostats down as it was a little too warm. With regards to the surrounding area, we absolutely fell in love with Staindrop, especially with the beautiful Christmas decorations through the village. We had a walk through the nearby Hamsterley Forest which is highly recommended (the tea room served delicious Turkey broth which was very welcome after getting rather wet and cold). We visited the coast (Whitby/Sandsend) which was about 1.5 hours away, but a favourite place. We also were able to spend time with both our children who are at University in Newcastle (about an hour away). The farm itself was lovely, and the owners so helpful and friendly. We will definitely be booking again!

About the location

STAINDROP

Barnard Castle 5 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the most grand in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains and a walled garden and 200 acre deer park add to the splendour. Staindrop has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes set round its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, plus of course its wide range of shops and tea rooms. Walkers will enjoy the many walks around Teesdale.
