  • "The cottage and garden are in need of some maintenance."

It was disappointing to note that the front door and garden were untidy with hose and broom just abandoned. Inside the general cleanliness was minimal and required (on day one) us to purchase toilet rolls and kindling whilst noting that the kitchen roll was virtually empty. Used kitchen scourers were also left (unhygenic) The ash tray for the burner was also full and had to be emptied. Fire blanker and extinguisher were hidden away and it would have been difficult to access if required. The central heating was turned off and but later rectified by the landlord. There was also a leak onto a bed from a velox roof window. Overall a disappointing experience.

Unfortunately you arrived and settled in well in advance of the arrival time meaning that we were unable to complete the changeover to our satisfaction as I explained to you on the day. We were happy to adjust the heating times within 15 minutes of your request. You can easily reach both the fire blanket and extinguisher when standing in front of the hob. There are no roof leaks - guests had left the window slightly open. Your attitude was very disappointing when we tried to welcome and accommodate you. Property Owner

  • "Lovely old stone cottage in a great position within Staindrop village."

Very handy for the Spar & the exceptionally welcoming pub. The house had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and the log burner made for a cosy evening. Plenty of local walks through the surrounding countryside and only 15 to 20 minutes drive away from many other attractions such as High Force waterfalls. This is one we will be coming back to again.

  • "We enjoyed our stay at Sunny Cottage."

It was comfortable, good parking, shop nearby. Lots of lovely places to visit & good walking especially with a dog! The only comment I would make is that access to the shower with the fixed screen, high side of bath & narrow access were a bit difficult for those of us who are not as flexible as we once were! Might be worth mentioning this in the details!

  • "A lovely looking cottage in a superb quiet location with bags of character, lovely wood burner and generous supply of logs, but needs a good spring clean and some maintenance on it."

We understand it’s an old property and it’s unlikely things will be straight and smooth; and we love all that character, but it’s no excuse for cleanliness and what looks like poorly executed DIY. I won’t list everything but for example dusty radiators, dead flies in the wall lights and windows, grotty sealant around the shower screen, white stuff stuck on the walls, dirty sockets and light switches….and the fixtures and fittings, gaps around sockets, bedside cabinets that fall apart and aren’t painted properly, architrave that doesn’t reach the floor, bathroom sinks with wood wobbling behind them (you can actually see in the pics) and that you can get your hand behind, bedroom lights that don’t work, paint on unpainted surfaces, fitted sheets that are way too big… I did feedback to the owner on the first evening and they said they’d talk with the housekeeper, but a phone call or even a visit wouldn’t have gone amiss. A few days in here fixing things and it would be a beautiful place.

I am surprised by your review as you texted I must say the beds are very comfortable (I’ve slept very well), and it’s lovely and quiet in a beautiful location. The wood burner was amazing the other night and the character of the place is superb. Having then drunk the complimentary wine you decided to try for a refund …., The hygiene issues are pretty desperate stuff - you would have to stand on a chair to find a fly in the uplighters and the radiators are dusty because they have fitted covers on them, but your interior design and decorating tips are most welcome …. Have you considered Travelodge ? Property Owner

I would have liked a hoover designated for the property and not shared with next door as I like to ensure a property is clean when I leave. Lovely location, walks form the door, a great spot for exploring the area, thoroughly recommend.

It was just myself and my husband with 1 little dog and the weather was perfect so was able to sit outside in the garden. This cottage is only small so anymore than 3 people in it i think you would be on top of each other. But we loved it. Beds were very comfortable, plenty of room to cook in the kitchen and very close to the shop, pub and bus stops. there was a welcome pack, which was very much appreciated. Thanks again Mike

  • "Personally more for 2people our bed was very comfortable ."

Lovely cottage but as above . Lovely sofas but not a lot of space when switched television off it kept coming back on . Kitchen adequate for 2. I must complain about the oven please take a look sorry to say but it was filthy hadn’t been cleaned for a long time so didn’t use it . One casserole dish I picked up and broke in my hand full of cracks .

Thankyou for your positive comments but I think you’re expecting a brand new oven ? - we have had the same cleaning routine for 5 years - scoured, rinsed and fresh foil every week. Property Owner

  • "Arrived found the cottage to be clean and tidy No toilet roll supplied on arrival lucky we had brought x 1 limited firewood and fire lighters for fire and matches (these matches) appeared to have been there since the mid eighties we had to go & buy matches logs for fire & 2024 matches as it was still chilly in April."

The oven was unclean there had been a previous meal cooked on the grill with the tin foil still in place and this needed cleaning before we did any cooking. Whilst we know about the rustic feel to cottages Various items we found were poor. Heating / no control is on central heating - it came on automatic such at 2am created v warm main bedroom which meant I had to use the other twin room as my wife was too hot - the boiler was very noisy in operation so take ear plugs. We think there is a general update needed in this property the kitchen looks tired and the cupboard doors are not fitting properly. My wife’s 60th birthday weekend we left a bit disappointed really.

You seemed very disappointed with our generous welcome fuel pack and offer of more logs for the stove and decided to reflect that in your review. The matches provided are certainly less than 40 years old as they were successfully used by previous guests. The kitchen and central heating are both very recent and in perfect order with detailed instructions and I also texted offering assistance . The boiler is very well sound insulated. We clean the grill pan and provide fresh cooking foil for every new guest also spare loo roll in bathroom cabinet - free Prosecco for next year’s birthday though ! Property Owner

He said he was sending his housekeeper who lived next door, however a school girl around 15 -16 arrived I suspect not the housekeeper. She said not a word agreed with our finding, was showed photos also. And was extremely nervous this was totally unfair and not the housekeeper at all. Her mother remained next door. Our weeks stay amounted to 3 days as conditions were to bad to stay. I did contact Sykes who also done nothing. I will not be using this company again, which is a shame as previously had accommodation booked with them with no problems. The landlord is well known in the village for treating people in this way, only after the money I suspect. I could go on but suspect it will fall on deaf ears.

About the location

STAINDROP

Barnard Castle 5 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the most grand in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains and a walled garden and 200 acre deer park add to the splendour. Staindrop has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes set round its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, plus of course its wide range of shops and tea rooms. Walkers will enjoy the many walks around Teesdale.
