  • "This is a beautiful property well presented and a joy to stay in"

    Reviewed by Chris5.0Oct 2024

  • "The property was well equipped, comfortable and warm."

Quite a few cottages we stay in have clearly been newly refurbished. This cottage was a little dated in decor and fittings which did not adversely affect our stay, but we would reserve the highest scores for the updated properties, We noticed what appeared to be fungal growth on the wall between the downstairs toilet and the utility room. We were only a party of 4 so there was sufficient seating for us in the lounge, but this cottage is for 6 and had we been 6 there would not have been enough space to seat all in the lounge. The cottage is supremely well sited to visit Wensleydale and surrounding areas and is set in a beautiful village.

In a quiet village with lovely views. We had showers every day but it didn't matter, it's well situated to explore the wonderful Dales countryside and then come home to a warm cosy cottage. We will definitely be coming back in future years.

Have stayed in many sykes cottages over the years and this is one of the best. Lovely quiet village setting. Great views. Private garden and patio area. Very roomy. All the facilities you need. Surrounded by country walks and quaint villages. Really enjoyed our stay.

The cottage was very well equipped and spotlessly clean, we found so many different walks that we couldn't manage to fit them all in but the scenery was spectacular and we never tired of it. We fully recommend a stay at the Barn knowing that you will have a magical time, I recommend going in spring when all the lambs are born and frolicking in the fields.

  • "Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Barn House and would return."

The beds were very comfy, the kitchen well equipped and clean. The lounge is also nice to sit and relax with an extra sofa in the dining room for a change of view. There was plenty of space. Thornton Rust is a quiet rural village set back away from the main road but a handy location if you want to get out and visit other places.

Amazing views, quiet farming village, very clean, fantastic kitchen with everything you need for cooking. Great log burner and comfortable sofas and rocking chair. Could not have asked for more. Weather wasnt great but staying in at this house was not a problem. 10 month old was very well catered for too.

The cottage was very clean with all the facilities you need to enjoy a relaxing week in this picturesque part of England. We will certainly book this cottage again if we return to Yorkshire in the future. The one and only thing I would say the property would benefit from, would be a tumble dryer, as drying clothes in the wet season was a little difficult.

  • "Barn House is an excellent accommodation and felt more like someone’s home than a holiday cottage."

It is nicely furnished giving comfort to its guests throughout the property. Great effort has been made to establish this feeling which is reflected in the good quality furnishings and fittings. It was a pleasure to return to Barn House after our daily excursions into the beautiful Dales. Off road parking for two cars is ideal and if more space is required there is a free car park nearby as well as plenty of on street parking spaces. The location is ideal for those seeking the rural country life with easy access to a number of public footpaths The amenities were ideal although I was aware of the comments of a lack of a Tumble Dryer which, I suppose with some guests who wished to do their laundry during their visit in inclement weather, may have been beneficial but it didn’t effect our stay one bit . One other small point was that the front of the house is somewhat of a sun trap during mid afternoon and it would have been nice to have a bench /chairs situated there permanently to have enjoyed it. A very point I know and not detrimental to our visit which we thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend Barn House to friends and family and wouldn’t hesitate to return to again.

It was well set up for self-catering, tidy and clean, spacious and very private and quiet at both the front and back of the property. The property is in a beautiful quiet village, no traffic, with plenty of walking opportunities directly from the property. The hallway entry and the utility room at the back make it very suitable for separating outdoor clothing and indoor use. We felt at home from the minute we arrived.

  • "We had a brilliant time during our week in The Barn House."

It has everything you could need, all very clean and comfortable. Its very handy for exploring the local area, and whilst there are no shops or pub in the village itself, there is one of each just a mile or so down the lane. We would highly recommend the chippy van which is in Aysgarth on a Tuesday (they have a website listing their whereabouts and times). The garden is a beautifully private place to sit and enjoy a beer and admire the views, and the birds are an entertainment in themselves, for the price of a packet of seed! The owners were very helpful, thank you for the welcome pack which was a nice touch! A lovely house in a stunning area.

The quality of the furniture and decor were of good quality as were the level and quality of the facilities etc. The location is very rural but convenient for touring the Yorkshire Dales. From the rear of the property are lovely expansive views over vales and hills. Sadly the only issue that was disappointing was the barking of dogs in the morning from the adjacent property. Other than that I can fully recommend this Holiday Cottage.

It was very clean & well furnished when we arrived, and being able to relax immediately in comfortable beds after the long drive up was really welcome. We spent each day doing some long routes cycling in tough weather, coming back muddy & cold, so having the wet room and a decent bathroom was great. Lastly, we found the kitchen well equipped with a big stove & oven, which made catering for our group a lot easier. Only improvement could be a couple of large stove pots for large portions of pasta or rice (along with a large collinder). Thanks again - next time we're back in the Dales we'd be happy to book another stay.

Impeccable clean inside and out. Loads of space a great snug living room with a more than adequate wood burner and a separate dining area made our break perfect. Amazing views over the Dales from the rear l. The only thing that we had an issue with was that the WiFi controlled heating thermostat was a bit complicated and came on when not needed. We were not sure or confident in changing the settings. Being conscious of the cost of heating oils we lowered the temperature but it then reset itself to a pre programmed temperature. Everything else was perfect and look forward to staying there again soon.

About the location

THORNTON RUST

Aysgarth 2 miles; Hawes 7 miles.

The idyllic village of Thornton Rust is situated high on the south side of the Wensleydale, just two miles from Aysgarth and three miles from Bainbridge. Thornton Rust is a quiet and peaceful backwater, approached from either side by a winding country lane which opens out unexpectedly to a pretty village of wide, grass verges, stone cottages and panoramic views of Wensleydale. The area is a walker's paradise and includes the well known tourist attractions of Aysgarth Falls and the impressive Bolton Castle which dates back to 1379. Aysgarth Falls have attracted visitors for over 200 years, famously Ruskin, Turner and Wordsworth all visited and enthused about the 'falls' outstanding beauty. In the 19th century nearby Aysgarth was a staging post and many a traveller would make their way down to view the falls from the bridge. Today, many will recognise the Upper Falls from the film Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves. In the nearby Freeholders' Wood, where the ancient art of coppicing is still carried out and visitors will find hazel, ash and wild cherry, among others. The woodland is carpeted with wildflowers in spring and is home to over 120 species. An excellent holiday location for walkers, offering a great base from which to explore both Wensleydale and Swaledale, with beauty spots in the area including Aysgarth Falls, Semerwater, castles at both Bolton and Middleham and of course, Hardraw Force - England's highest single drop waterfall at 99ft! There are also lots of interesting market towns and villages to visit, including Hawes, Leyburn and Bainbridge, to name but a few.
