"Lovely quaint cottage in beautiful surroundings."
The paintings and ornaments in there have a common theme of the Yorkshire countryside and wildlife. I would definitley stay there again.
-
"The cottage is not suitable for winter letting as the shower-room and kitchen were very cold all the time."
The water pressure was extremely low.
-
"We really enjoyed our stay ,unfortunately the shower didn't have great water pressure, it was lovely and hot but not powerful enough."
-
"Lovely cottage, very comfortable."
Ideally located for local attractions. Some beautiful walks around the area, especially the 35 minute one to the Boars Head in Ripley. Would highly recommend staying here I look forward to coming again in the future

Lovely little cottage great location and very clean the instructions from the owner was easy to follow the only minor issue we had was the shower not sure if this was sown to water pressure or just a poor shower but don't let this put you off we had great time and would definitely recommend this place and would definitely stay again
-
"Lovely cottage, perfect for our needs."
2nd visit. great value. Great communication with owner. Will definitely be back. Thank you.
-
"Lovely cottage, nice furnishings and beautiful location."
Only gripe there is no blind in kitchen, hence felt very exposed at night.
-
"We had glorious weather and peaceful south facing garden a plus."
On the downside the property was on a busy road and traffic woke you up early in the morning and with bends in the road you can only safely turn left out of the property. The kitchen was well equipped. The shower was very low pressure and only an empty had wash dispenser was left just as well we brought a travel bar of soap. The internet was very poor at a downoad speed of 5 mpbs and upload of 1. Close to wonderful Fountains Abbey (best visited on two separate visits) one for Studley royal and other for Abbey and water gardens and Brimham rocks sadly no walks direct from cottage as no pavements. Harrogate always best to avoid with horrendous traffic.
-
"We were very pleased on arrival but immediately we were upset to find a DOWNSTAIRS bathroom which was NOT on description if it had been we would not have booked."
There was no welcome pack and cleaning left a lot to be desired. Kitchen tools plates etc were limited numbers and no water glasses, oven was very greasy? The lounge is comfortable with a good TV but very poor internet could not manage Tablet and Alexa at the same time. Bedroom was nice but as others have said the bed was very low. Shower was of very poor quality with doors hanging off at the bottom and the pressure very LOW as others have said.

Water flow in shower a little slow and the bed was a little low had trouble getting out of it each morning otherwise a very comfortable and relaxing stay would go again
-
"The cottage was very clean and comfortable, and well situated."
It took us a little while, being used to a gas hob, to work out how to use the electric hob and the microwave but we found the instruction books eventually. Maybe a leaflet of instructions about the house would be good. The only let down was the shower, which lacked power and was hard to keep in the position you wanted. We know the Dales well but for those who don't a few tips about where to visit and where to eat out could be useful, with a special mention for the Ripley ice cream.

"Fantastic little cottage I would recommend it to anyone I am hoping to return next year for the 3 time"
-
"A fantastic find."
.. A great cottage, that was warm and cosy in a wonderful location (an hour to many great locations and 10 mins to Harrogate, Ripon and Knaresborough), with view for miles, good dogs walks from the doorstep, a safe enclosed rear garden and off road parking. It had all the facilities you would expect in a holiday cottage. OK the shower is not very powerful, but was OK to shower / wash with, but for me this was offset by the homely feel of the place. I will definitely go back if I'm looking to stay in the area
-
"On arrival temperature was below zero, cottage was freezing cold ,drains in kitchen sink etc smelt ,cupboards smelt damp ."
Main bedroom wasn’t very appealing second bedroom had 2wardobes and a chair in it ,felt very creepy . The whole place appeared tired and needed some money spent on it . We felt we were unable to stay ,managed to find alternative accommodation elsewhere .had I been the landlord I would have put a bit of heat on to make it welcoming . The landlord also asked me if I could be economical with the heating as it was expensive to run ,☹️

"Comfortable cosy cottage in an ideal location for getting out and about to nearby Harrogate,Ripon & Knaresborough and into the Dales, across to the North Yorkshire Moors and Coast."
Whilst the cottage was adequate for our needs there is scope for improvement with the shower having very little power and kitchen equipment e.g cutlery and crockery items not being consistent. Also whilst having a slow cooker available is great not having an oven tray for items such as frozen chips and other items was a nuisance. Despite the forgoing comments we did enjoy our two week stay there.
-
"A bit further away from bus route than expected although excellent public transport to Harrogate and Ripon."
Everything was perfect except the shower ,really let everything else down ,it has no power and was impossible to wash hair properly , more of a trickle than a shower. Great secure garden for our dog ,lovely views beyond the garden , we found some great walks on the doorstep and of course the Ripley estate was exceptional (we can thoroughly recommend the butchers). The railway/cycle way walk to Knaresborough was ideal when it was raining. All in all a really nice cottage with a very comfortable bed ,we look forward to returning in the spring.
-
"Lovely place, had a very chilled week at Scarah cottage, weather was fabulous too."
Lots of places to go within a short drive. Had a tiny problem locating the entrance when we arrived but a quick call to the owner sorted it out in moments (turned out we were sat in the layby looking at it) . Had everything in that we needed.
-
"The cottage proved to be a very good base for exploring North Yorkshire."
Had everything we needed, and proved to be quite cosy. No negative aspects though it would be nice to have a blind for the kitchen window and the back door, to provide a little more privacy at night.
-
"Having read the reviews, some of which had some crital comments, we went with an open mind."
..well, we found 99% of these to be unfair... the cottage was lovely to look at, very clean inside and out, a very adequate fitted kitchen, a lovely large bathroom with a large shower cubicle ( although not a power shower) it still works very well. The lounge was large enough for us two & our dog. Then upstairs has a dressing room & a lovely large bedroom with an extremely comfy bed. The enclosed garden to the rear was perfect for us. Along with a parking area. Comments made regarding no where to walk your dog... rubbish, we found atleast four walks that were perfectly safe.. one of which was around 30 mins circular woodland walk... they are there if you look. We had a fantastic week's stay and was sad to have to go home..the cottage was perfect ... in an ideal location for us, at a great price. Will we be going back? Absolutely ! Thank you.
-
"Lovely cottage lovely setting."
Parking very tight. Shower need improvement but struggled with the key hard to turn. Gutters need clearing as heavy rains were pouring down walls outside
-
"A lovely cottage for 2 in the Yorkshire Dale's."
After some reviews, was a bit wary but was more than adequate, well fitted and everything we needed. Road from the back of cottage to main road at an acute angle but fine if you were careful.
-
"A small isolated rural cottage clean and adequately equipped."
But conveniently placed for a wide range of local interests.it had a good enclosed dog friendly garden and small patio in which to enjoy the evening sun. The cottage was comfortable and met all our needs. The shower however was underpowered. Access to parking was tight but we managed with an estate car. We enjoyed our stay and would consider coming again. Don't forget to try the ice cream in Ripley.
-
"Small and cosy just right for two on a quiet get away."
Very neat and tidy and well provided with a small private garden to enjoy that glass of wine after a busy day in the countryside. Well positioned for all the major sites with Harrogate and its shops and Harlow Carr gardens just minutes away. Fountains Abbey and Bolton Abbey and Ripon Cathedral and Market are close by. York itself with all its attractions is not to far to go - use the park and ride. For a good meal out try The Inn at South Stainley. We would certainly stay here again.
-
"Great location, generally all good, however; Shower water pressure next to useless, ok for a hand held rinse off, Why not have a booster pump fitted if water pressure is low?"
or use a header tank upstairs? kitchen equipment pretty basic, no breadboard, no chopping board, only hard stone to blunt knives on. No colander, no mixing bowel. Found an ironing board, no iron though. Bit more thought for practical living required. Basic is the word that springs to mind. Ironi
-
"This cottage was in an ideal location."
No issues as highlighted in other reviews.Very warm and cosy. No issues with car parking space and we have a SUV. Had everything we needed and would use it again
-
"Fantastic location and property is just like a home from home"

Lovely secluded cottage - very comfortable- the house was enhanced with the beautiful pictures/ paintings throughout the house - would definitely recommend
-
"Lovely and cosy cottage, good base when visiting Harrogate!"
Great communication and flexibility from the host, thank you!
-
"Lovely property just as the pictures depicted."
Warm and cosy when we arrived. The bed was very comfortable. Due to the damp weather the patio area at the back door was a little slippy so care should be taken at this time of year. Would recommend if you are looking for a base to visit the beautiful surrounding area.
-
"The cottage has all that you need and great location to visit lots of interesting towns and historic properties."
The only thing with the property was the curtains in the bedroom were missing a few curtain pole hoops, so detracted from what was a well presented cottage. Despite being on a relatively busy road it was still quiet and peaceful location. I would recommend it to couples and if the owner ever decided to turn the dressing room into a bedroom for children, great for a small family.
-
"Maybe a blind at the kitchen window and back door would be good apart from that ..."
Maybe a blind at the kitchen window and back door would be good apart from that every thing was 100% and we would stay there again we had a lovely peaceful holiday
-
"The cottage was perfect, had everything I needed."
Plenty of interesting places to visit nearby. Wonderful all round holiday.
-
"When we arrived, the cottage felt damp and in need of airing."
It smelt fusty and with more than a hint of tobacco smoke. Some of the dampness related to wet towels which we discovered in a wardrobe in the spare bedroom, on which a yellow sticker saying 'private' had been stuck. The quilt cover was stained. The driveway was not easy for other than small cars. These matters apart, the kitchen was reasonably well equipped, the water was hot & the heated towel rail excellent. The heating worked well. Suggestions - putting a 7 on the back gate would be good, as would be an extractor fan in the kitchen,
-
"The cottage was lovely Bed was extremely comfortable If I have any ..."
The cottage was lovely Bed was extremely comfortable If I have any complaints it would be that the kitchen could be better equipped and the shower head changed But other than that it was perfect and the location was also perfect
-
"It was a delightful, well finished cottage and just right for us."
The garden was very secure for the dog. You get used to the stairs and the bathroom downstairs wasn't an issue for us. We will be back.
-
"Used same place before ."
..excellent on all fronts!!
-
"Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Scarah Bank Cottages."
Facilities were good….only obvious improvement would be a more powerful shower! Back garden ideal for dog owners. Car parking had been highlighted as a but challenging but we have a large car and it wasn’t a problem at all. Just need to take a little care when manoeuvring. Location was great and we enjoyed visits to Brimham Rocks, Bolton Abbey and Fountains Abbey. Will happily go back to Scarah Bank.

"Loads of problems with this property, some of which other people have said about ..."
Loads of problems with this property, some of which other people have said about in there reviews, too many to list, not worth what i paid for the week, had a major fault with bedroom door handle on the first night there, still not fixed when i left 6 days later
-
"Garden gate requires repairing as we couldn’t secure to prevent dog escaping."
Hall cupboard handle needs securing. Shower door doesn’t seal when showering. Small niggles but should be attended to.
-
"It would have been helpful to know that the bedroom and bathroom were on different levels and that the stairs are very steep!"
Also I would have had difficulty on arrival getting the key out of the key safe as I am only 5ft 2 and could not see the numbers, thank goodness I had my husband with me!
-
"Struggled to find the cottage initially, due to address being Ripley and it's actually in Bedlam a village a mile down the road."
...but got there eventually and it was well worth it. Lovely cottage , ideal for a couple and a dog. My wife read some of the reviews ( complaints) and we can't understand the pettiness of some people. My only concern.... the need for a smaller wooden spoon! Great property, close to local facilities and the dales for touring too. Will definitely rebook.
-
"An enjoyable stay in a nice rural location."
The property is well situated for both town and country and provides a good standard of accommodation. It is spacious for two people with a good kitchen and the beds were comfortable. On arrival there was a problem and we needed to contact the owner who dealt with our concern promptly, with an appropriate explanation of why the problem had occurred. Some kitchen facilities, such as drinking glasses were in short supply and it would have been useful to have jugs and a measuring jug also.
-
"There was a lot of cobwebs all over the cottage and the furnishings upstairs was very dated, the dressing room would have been better utilised as a bedroom."
On saying that the overall stay was pleasant and comfortable
-
"Had a wonderful three nights in this delightful cottage, helped by perfect weather."
It is a well appointed cosy cottage with a suntrap quiet back garden for relaxing in.
-
"Very comfortable cottage in a great location, ideal for visiting lots of local places of interest."
Really busy road, so the off road parking was good. Really comfortable and relaxing with good wifi and TV reception. The only downside is the lack of an upstairs bathroom, there really needs to be one close to where people sleep, not down a flight of stairs. Had it not been for that I'd have given full marks.
-
"We had a lovely break, The mile?"
? to Ripley was walkable but the speed of the busy traffic was frightening due to the fact there is no pavement,
-
"Scarah bank cottage is located perfectly for visited many tourist spots, including Harrogate, Ripley, the dales and much more."
Absolutely loved our time there. The cottage is well equipped and cosy for dining in, watching tele. There are a few local walks from the cottage for early morning dog walks. Definitely go back
-
"Cottage not so suitable for a dog as busy road without footpaths meaning car had to be taken out for any walks also it should be noted not suitable for big car drive a nightmare."
The cottage had some nice features it a few questionable ones garden furniture reasonably new but old shabby cushions no milk jug or jug of any kind large dishwasher very few implements to justify using spent holiday washing up . I think the owner would be better having the back bedroom as main room as front bedroom very noisy. In previous cottages all have a welcome pack explaining how things work etc .We did realise it was a 3 star rating so not complaining just hopefully constructive criticism.
-
"Perfect location for visiting the Yorkshire Dales."
Lovely, clean, cozy cottage. Well equipped kitchen and very comfortable bed. Tastefully decorated.
-
"Location of the cottage was good in that the places we wanted to visit were within a short drive away."
We felt the cottage had not been cleaned thoroughly especially the dressing room where long white hairs kept appearing on our clothing and the kitchen for when we lifted a slate board on the work surface there where breadcrumbs underneath it! The sink in the bathroom had a leak which was fixed promptly when reported to the owner. The kitchen was lacking in sharp knives especially a bread knife which would have been useful! The garden furniture is in need of replacing along with tidying up the garden. The hedge had been cut but the cuttings had been left in the garden. We felt the overall appearance of the property is tired.
-
"7 Scarah Bank is a lovely stone terraced cottage."
Very cosy, warm and welcoming. We shall return when possible. Had no problem with access at the rear..just have to be a little careful. The exit is also fine and you can see on coming traffic if you look a little beyond the first bend you can view the road for an adequate distance. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean. The garden safe for a dog at the back. Contents all adequate. The bathroom is downstairs and the lack of blinds or curtains in the kitchen was not a problem for us. Only point to be aware of was the next door neighbour called round to ask that the outside light at rear be turned off as it interfered with their stargazing. Same neighbour did kindly put out the bins however.
-
"Would be better with an en-suite upstairs instead of just the dressing room."
Some hints on local facilities would be good as well as the refuse collection days. Drive a bit tight if you have a large car.
-
"Good location with lots to see within a few miles"
-
"The cottage is in a good area for exploring the Dales."
It had all the facilities we needed and the dishwasher was a Godsend. Our dog loves the garden. The only downside was there were a few gangly spiders up near the ceiling in the bedroom. I would recommend this cottage for a perfect stay and very close to both Harrogate and Ripley.
-
"A wonderful cottage."
Very very clean, comfortable and peaceful.
-
"Very cosy cottage this was our 2nd stay here and has had some great updates including WiFi."
Ideally located for exploring both the moors and dales excellent value for money.
-
"Landlord was extra helpful when I turned up with a van too big to fit in the car parking space."
-
"Cottage good location, fairly well equipped Cottage slightly tired, air extractor in bathroom needs fixing, dreadful noise."
Parking at rear is adequate but problematic if you have a large vehicle
-
"Excellent value for money accommodation."
Ideally located for exploring both the Yorkshire Dales and Moors. Very cosy with everything you need. Will be booking it again asap!
-
"Cottage very nice but needs some updating operating instructions for shower and heating not to easy to find ."
-
"Having found the cottage lovely was bitterly disappointed with the fact that the pub, which was listed as 10 minutes walk away, had been closed for 2."
5 years. Therefore anybody wanting to go for a drink or a meal had to drive to Ripley and somebody could not have a drink.
-
"Think the cottage would benefit from a information sheet,to help with the hot water and rubbish disposal."
Other than that no problem.
-
"The Cottage was in a quiet tranquil setting with fields in front and to the rear, lots of lambs in the field."
Lots of activities in the area from historic cities / towns. National Trust properties. Thorp Perrow Aboretum a hidden gem not to be missed!!!!! driveway entrance is not the easiest to negotiate but OK with care.
-
"The pub that is 5minute walk is now closed !"
!
-
"Nearest pub has closed down."
Smart tidy cottage in lovely area.
-
"Local POI would be ok ie distance to shops/stores ."
Compilation of local walks .
-
"We thoroughly enjoyed our break at the cottage."
The cottage was lovely, extremely well presented, spotless everywhere and very comfortable. Our dog loved his first holiday and settled very well in strange surroundings. Must just add the road outside was frightening when taking our dog out in the morning, the speed of traffic was so fast especially on the bends way beyond any speed limit for a B road.
-
"We were very happy with the cottage, lovely and clean and homely."
Close to many places of interest, really enjoyed our stay.
-
"No issues with the cottage."
The only downside was the main road in front of the cottage. Speed limit is 50/60mph and the road is quite busy. Access to the cottage is on a blind bend so quite a concern with the speed of the traffic.
-
"We thought this was a well-appointed cottage very convenient to many places of interest."
It was clean, comfortable and well equipped and we had a very pleasant stay. I was however surprised that there was no information/welcome pack. Considering that the cottage has no WiFi and rather poor network coverage I think it was particularly important to provide this. The cooker has an induction hob which I have only come across once before and they are not easy to operate if you are not familiar with them. We were actually locked out of it half way through cooking a meal and it took a while to locate a user manual. Also we managed to find a footpath over the fields to Ripley village and the nearest pub using our GPS (or you can take the permissive path via Whipley Bank Lane on the opposite side of the road), but it might have been helpful to have this sort of useful local info provided.
-
"Comfortable cottage."
Disappointed there was no hot water on arrival. Large bathroom with good shower. Bathroom could be improved greatly by the addition of a shelf (there is plenty of space for one). Have been staying in cottages for many years and this is the first one which didn't provide a welcome tray or a cottage information pack ~ just basic info would have been useful. There are no blinds, nets or curtains on the kitchen window and outside door! You therefore have no privacy when going to the bathroom at night. There is a secure back garden which makes it an ideal dog friendly cottage though and we would stay again.
-
"The cottage was quite shabby and in need of a coat of paint."
Although traffic noise was mentioned in your literature we could not leave the bedroom window open as traffic was passing all through the night this we did not expect. Parking was quite restricted and anyone with a large car e.g. an estate would find it very difficult to maneuver into the allocated space. No blinds or curtains on the kitchen window and outside door, therefore no privacy when you entered the toilet and shower room which was situated downstairs and you had to pass the back door during the night. We have always found the cottages we have rented from Sykes often exceeded our expectations, but we could not recommend this one.
-
"No cleaning or supply of towels bedding etc for 2nd week."
No discussions or written agreement / statement was given to cover this situation when booking and something you do not want to worry about when renting for two weeks. Sorry a situation that Sykes need to sort.
-
"The cottage would have been great except for the need for coat hooks to allow for wet coats to be hung up to dry, had to hang over an open door, also no cottage information thus could not retune TV to allow us to get the masters on BBC 2 or many other stations."
-
"Good basic accommodation with all the facilities required, cosy and comfortable and good location for sightseeing and local walks."
Owner particularly helpful during recent severe weather difficulties of Feb 2018. Very enjoyable stay all round.
-
"Some coat hooks to hang outdoor clothes and extra shelves in bathroom."
Wi-Fi would be a good addition for local planning.
-
"WiFi would be useful as mobile telecoms signals are poor in that area"

About the location
RIPLEY
Harrogate 4 miles.
The village of Ripley in Lower Nidderdale, situated on the leeward side of the Yorkshire Dales, was designed and built, by Sir William Amcotts Ingleby in the 1830's. Sir William was so inspired by a model estate village he saw on a visit to France, that he came home and demolished the existing buildings in Ripley, beginning again from scratch to a classic French design. Today, the village is small and unspoilt and boasts a beautiful Castle in the centre (still home to the Ingleby family) with extensive gardens open to the public which include waterfalls, bridges and a lake. Deer graze in the grounds and there is a shop and tea-rooms within the Castle. The village has a large cobbled market place in the centre, overlooked by the Boar's Head - an old coaching inn which offers an excellent restaurant, bar and bistro. There is a village store and ice cream parlour where visitors can enjoy the very popular Ripley ice cream, along with a butcher’s, art gallery and much more.
