The hosts are extremely generous in terms of what they provide for their guests and are on hand if you need any advice or assistance. We walked from the door on a couple of occasions, ate out and visited Ilkley and lovely Bolton Abbey. We loved the well stocked kitchen and the beds were comfy. The bathrooms were lovely and clean and everything worked perfectly. My only comment, and this is not a criticism, is that the lounge is quite tight for 5 adults ( in our case 5 tall adults) to sit and watch TV or chat. If you were eating out a lot or making use of the lovely garden space then this would be of lesser importance. Would definitely recommend to others.

Cottage located approximately 2 miles outside of Silsden town on a farm. The cottage was quirky but extremely homely, could quite happily live here !!!!! Every aspect of the cottage was perfect, the facilities were excellent the owners obviously are passionate about their business and had thought of everything down to the finest detail. The cottage would accommodate 5 adults comfortably, however only me and my husband stayed on this occasion to visit both Grassington and Skipton Xmas markets. Plenty of parking at the rear of the property. Lovely welcome pack with scones jam butter and milk, plus lovely fresh flowers in both the kitchen and sitting room. A hidden gem just outside of Silsden will definitely be back in 2020 to do some of the lovely local walks. Keep up the excellent work, PS loved the underfloor heating especially as I was the first up to make the coffee

Was really clean too. Loved the complimentary jam and homemade scones on arrival. Location was rural but the countryside views were fantastic. Disliked · The only "even better if" for family stays would be to supply some stair gates as the nice original stone steps are very steep for exploring toddlers. These may also compromise more mobility impaired visitors as well.

Everything was done to make our holiday experience pleasurable...the cottage was extremely clean, very well equipped and homemade scones on arrival was a really nice touch. There was so much attention to detail with maps and leaflets filed in an organised manner...it made a pleasant change to draws of out-of-date leaflets. This is a definite if you want a cottage to get away from the hustle and bustle of the day to day routine but still be close enough to visit places of interest. There were modern conveniences of wi-fi, television, washing machine and dishwasher but also games and books. Tom and Liz (the owners) have put in a great deal of time providing a folder of walks to be taken from the cottage as well as another folder providing information of places of interest within an hours drive which are colour coded depending on the visiting group's age ranges/interests. The variety and number of these places is plentiful. Laminated Ordnance Survey maps are also available to borrow. Silsden has a very good supermarket which is open until late all days but Sunday and there is a petrol station just as you leave Silsden for the main road. The views from the drive to the farm/cottage are amazing. Tom and Liz are perfect hosts.

During our 3 days we never really felt the need to go to the National Park although we did for a brief walk. Most of our walking was done from the house. The house contains everything you need and the hosts were extremely generous in providing those little essentials that you always forget to buy. (As a scone addict I do include the freshly baked scones available on arrival as an essential.) If you wished you could spend several weeks just reading the enormous amount of information made available. Thank you Tom and Liz again for a wonderful experience.

  • "The cottage is set beautifully, with views over the fields towards Silsden."

From the cottage, you can make walks over footpath tracks through the fields following the descriptions that are available inside the cottage. We took a 3mile walk with our kids and they loved it. Besides the walks, there's also tourist information about all the sights within a 1 hour drive. We used it to prepare for the days we spent, and never needed to visit a tourist information center. The beautiful Yorkshire dales (Malham Cove/Janet's foss waterfall) also provided a perfect walk with kids. We also recommend Saltaire, a Unesco site village in the neighbourhood. As for the cottage itself, it was very well equiped, it was well isolated and comfortable, with good beds. The hosts were great. We could have easily spent a week longer there, and if we return to Yorkshire we'll check first if this cottage is available.

  • "This cottage was truly superb."

The whole cottage was sparkling clean and had a cozy attractive feel to it. The beds and front room furniture were comfortable. The showers were sparkling clean and worked well. The ground floor heating gave a very even and cozy temperature and the log fire in the front room lit easily and drew well. The owners had added many nice little touches to the way the cottage was presented. There were quite a lot of kitchen extras (tea, coffee, etc.) in the cupboards and in the fridge which made life easier. The scones and jam on arrival were very welcome! We have never stayed in as well equipped a kitchen! Whilst there were not such brilliant views from the windows once you got outside the cottage the views were tremendous. There were walks to be had straight from the cottage without a need to take the car anyway. The owners have compiled comprehensive folders showing local walks and many local places to visit. You do need to be aware that there are a set of steep stone stairs from the lounge into the 'basement' downstairs bathroom. There is another bathroom upstairs but this need to be borne in mind by anyone unsteady on their feet. The cottage and the owners cannot be praised enough for this cottage.

  • "My family think I'm a wonderful organiser - so challenged me to find self-catering accommodation on the south side of the Dales, in peak holiday period, for five adults, one of whom had mobility issues, in the middle of the school summer holidays, with only 4 weeks notice."

I thought, when I found Curlew Cottage that I'd hit the jackpot (i.e. _found_ somewhere! It turned out not quite as accessible as we'd hoped - but with a little jiggling of sleeping arrangements, was fine (note to others: the uneven floors are VERY uneven, and the single room is on a half-landing-up-a-half-separated-stairs - I'd recommend you look at Kestrel next door, and round up three other family members and book both). When my husband and I turned up as the advanced guard, we were very taken aback - EVERYTHING was perfect. A great welcome from the hosts. A house that I'd be proud to call my home (and it feels like a home rather than a show home). Superbly equipped (and "ask us if there is anything you need, there isn't room to fit everything in"). I had looked at a map (yep, near enough to the Wharfe Valley, book it) but not _really_ llooked at a map, so the setting came as a complete surprise. I'd imagined a mill-town terrace - nothing wrong with that, I thought - often have really nice views. So to find ourselves on a working farm, high above the Aire was a superb bonus. I'm not sure whether my further enhanced reputation as an organiser is a bonus, or a curse ....

About the location

SILSDEN

Bolton Abbey 8.5 miles; Ilkley 8.5 miles; Skipton 9 miles.

The pretty town of Silsden, set on the edge of the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park, commands sweeping views of the River Aire and its valley, and has a thriving community with local amenities. Although Silsden was originally an agricultural town, the construction of the nearby Leeds and Liverpool Canal meant that it later became an important centre for the mill industry, however the local economy is now largely supported by tourism, and it has become a perfect place to stay and explore the local area. Down the Aire Valley lies historic Skipton, known as “The Gateway to the Dales”, a quaint market town boasting an ancient castle open to the public, a beautiful old parish church and a colourful market occupying the cobbled setts each side of the high street. In 2008, the Academy of Urbanism voted the high street as the best shopping spot in Britain. In the next valley lies Addingham, a thriving, small community with several good pubs serving fine ale and excellent food, a scattering of small shops and a delightful golf course surrounded by breathtaking countryside. Nearby Bolton Abbey is one of the region's most scenic areas and the walk along the river to the Strid is a must. The Victorian Spa town of Ilkley is also worth a visit, with its wide streets, world-famous Box Tree Restaurant and Bettys Tea Rooms, while Ilkley Moor is the subject of Yorkshire's unofficial anthem “On Ilkla Moor Baht at”. With steam railways offering regular excursions through stunning scenery, canal day trips, castles and pretty market towns all available nearby, Silsden is a wonderful base for touring the Bronte Country and North and West Yorkshire.
