  • "We have stayed a couple of times in Ploughman’s Rigg property which is excellent, however, someone else beat us to it so we booked Shepherds Crook."

We absolutely loved this property too. It was plenty big enough for us and our 2 beagles and we never used the upstairs of the property at all. These cottages are wonderfully furnished and just so comfortable. I can’t recommend them enough, although I probably need to stop that, as they may be too booked up for when we want to book again for next year ;-)

The owner Carol was always available for help and advice about the area I would say she goes above and beyond in this department. It’s a very peaceful farm location with an access road without tarmac. My mother in law loved her downstairs bedroom with en-suite wet room she spent more time in there than we expected. The location is handy for visiting Harrogate and catching a train into York. We had a meal locally in Spofforth at the castle inn which was nice but expensive. Also went to The Guy Fawkes Arms in Scotton 20 minutes away approximately. I highly recommend this place. Food was fresh tasty and very reasonably priced. Overall we enjoyed this experience very much.

  • "Shepherd’s Crook was a lovely holiday cottage to stay in, presented to a very high standard."

There was a wonderful and very thoughtful welcome pack waiting for us on our arrival which we greatly appreciated and enjoyed. It was very useful for us that one of the double bedrooms could be changed into a twin bedroom. The beds and pillows were particularly comfortable! The owners living on site meant any needs that arose were met very quickly (I needed a dog water bowl). Plenty of walks available for the dog which was good and a small area was fenced off at the back of the cottage to allow a secure off lead area for the dog. The provision of a EV charging point right outside the cottage in the parking area was extremely useful to me as an electric car driver! The cottage is down a fairly long and narrow unmade track and you do feel out in the country but at the same time very close to Harrogate and other places of interest for days out. There is a great dog friendly pub in Spofforth, The Castle Inn, which you can walk to from the cottage which does lovely food and morning coffee. I would definitely stay at Shepherd’s Crook again.

The space, 3 double bedrooms all with en-suite, kitchen equipment, technology, comfort, outdoor space - everything has been given great thought - even down to the bespoke, fenced, outdoor area for furry friends. Such a peaceful place. The village is within an easily walk-able distance via a public footpath (though this can be muddy in wet weather). Can't fault it at all.

Spacious yet had the warmth of being in a cottage, helped by the style of decoration and oak beams. Being welcomed with a welcome basket and card was a lovely touch and Carol was friendly and available should you require her (not that we did). The beautiful views from the cottage and the surrounding countryside are gorgeous. Our dog appreciated having his own enclosed area. Marvellous walks from the door step. • "The owner of the property was really friendly."

The property had some issues that could do with attention, the main one was the flies and wasps while we were there the weather was good but because of the flying insects could not leave the windows or doors open , I think it would be a better stay if the cottage had insect mesh at all windows and doors. The cottage is not fully suitable for people with mobility difficulties as there were 5 steps up to the rear garden so you only have the option to sit on the front patio which leads on to the parking area. The property is attached to other cottages which wasn't obvious when we booked, we thought it was a stand alone cottage, the outdoor photos were slightly misleading. The 2 shower rooms upstairs were very narrow and awkward to use and the toilet in the ground floor bedroom at certain times of the day smelled of the cesspit. The drive up to the cottage was horrendous . The inside of the cottage was beautifully furnished but the seats at the dining room table were really hard to sit on.The cottage and the location of it had many plus points, it was a beautiful cottage and the owner was was more than helpful and if some of the issues I have raised could be sorted we would be more than happy to return, there were so many wonderful things to see and explore and all within a handy distance of the cottage

The property is such high quality that it makes it a pleasure to come back to after a day out. There was everything you need and more with washing machine, dish washer, bar b qué, outside furniture etc. It might be worth adding fly screens to the doors and windows with it being on a farm the summer months do mean extra flies and the heat means the doors and windows needed to be open. The instructions for the hob need a little redoing as it took a bit of working out how to get it working. In the description for the property it could maybe mention that the entrance driveway is more of a farm track and isn't smooth tarmac so that anyone who doesn't drive a 4 x 4 would know that it can be a bit bumpy. Thank you though, it was a lovely holiday made really enjoyable by the cottage.

  • "The cottage was beautiful and equipped to a very high standard."

The welcome basket was very generous. It's also rare that a cottage provides essentials like hand soap, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc so that was a welcome surprise. Although based on a farm, the location was fab for exploring local towns and attractions and there were 2 lovely country dog walks with pubs at the end, so bonus! It would have been helpful to have an outside tap to wash the dog after our muddy walks, and unfortunately we found the sofas in the lounge really uncomfortable, no idea why, think they were a bit upright! But other than that an exceptional cottage and will definitely be returning. Oh just one other thing, I appreciate it's a farm track, but the road down to the cottages from the main road was extremely bumpy with lots of pot holes. Not ideal unless you're driving a 4x4!

Based on farm, this is one of 3 cottages. Clean, fresh, modern & comfortable offering a home from home experience. Everything you would need was provided right down to a rolling pin!! A fantastic hamper from Betty's awaited us, aswell as milk and butter. We had a bit of an issue getting a taxi into Wetherby to meet friends, as they couldn't find the location. Not being from the area, we couldn't really help with directions. However, sorted eventually, though the taxi driver came from Harrogate, so was a bit pricy (£22 to go 5 miles into Wetherby). Also had to walk down the farm path to main road (pitch black, but luckily we had torches). Journey back better, so tip for future taxi travellers into Wetherby - use Amber Taxis, although Leeds based they have local drivers. This is an ideal spot if you want to just hole up for a few days. There are plenty of walks into small villages and the hosts provide step by step directions (with pictures) in the very comprehensive instruction folder left for us. Wouldn't hesitate to stay again and worth the money paid. Thank you Carol for a warm welcome.
