  • "We spent 5 very wet September days at Monks Cottage."

On the positive side it was very warm and the central heating worked well. It was very dark inside though, and not light enough downstairs to comfortably read a book. After complaining one of the staff the pub kindly leant us a reading light, which solved the problem. There was no instruction book for guests. The Wi-fi code was written on the back of the key fob but we weren't told that initially. We never really understood how the recycling worked. There was no sign of any firewood for the fire, but the cottage was so warm that we never needed to request it. The bed was comfortable but there is very limited headroom on getting out of one side of the bed. the bath/shower drained very slowly. The noise from the pub machinery is pretty loud in the garden, but is audible at a low level inside the cottage, both day and night despite what the descriptions say.

Comfortable, warm and well appointed with the added charm of being in the grounds of the Old Hall Inn, where Dan and his friendly team give you a warm welcome, good food and a great range of cask ales. The surrounding countryside is stunning. A hidden jewel in a crown of beauty.

  • "Monks Cottage is a pleasant, well located cottage."

With a little effort, it could be so much more. It felt rather tired & neglected. It was clean & tidy but has many dusty areas, filthy windows & really sad hanging baskets/pots. The photos implied lots of light & pretty flowers. In reality, the cottage needs better lighting and it would be much more attractive if it felt that the crockery matched, was more plentiful & generally a little more generous. Maybe more than one tea towel? It's literally the first cottage we've stayed in that hasn't had a few tea bags & some washing up liquid. That said, the people in the pub were very nice, though I'd recommend booking a table rather than wandering in, hoping for a meal!

  • "Reading past reviews they seem to have taken past comments on board."

The fan at the back of the pub is NOT an issue. It's just background noise and the sound of birds singing drowns it out. Lovely old stone cottage, beautifully equipped and furnished. Lounge is really comfortable. It's old with very thick stone walls so on the dark side but that's part of the character. Kitchen well set up and equipped except it does need some small side plates not just dinner plates (some of which are HUGE platters), some proper bowls for cereal or soup and coffee mugs not those small coffee cups. Also a few more glasses (a bit of a random collection of about 5 glasses meant washing them out frequently). Bathroom lovely, really needs a toilet brush though (one of those new easy to clean silicone ones would be good). Towels are white, fluffy and a decent size! Had we stayed longer than 4 days though we would have wanted to wash or change them. Bed is really, really comfortable. Bumped my head twice on overhead beam though. I'd put the drawer unit in the lost space under the eaves and move the bedside tables and bed 2 feet over then probably would have enough headroom on both sides on the bed. The staff at the pub are lovely and it's a good pub with some great ales and nice wines. We really enjoyed our stay in this gorgeous little cottage. A fantastic base to explore this beautiful part of the country.

It is a very different property from most cottages we have stayed at but that made it special. It is very clean and had good facilities. The bread eggs butter and milk were a welcome start on the first day. We expected to be disturbed by the fan from the kitchen after reading other reviews but we didnt find it too bad and it never bothered us at night. The enclosed garden was perfect for our two dogs they were able to run around in safety. The staff at the Old hall inn were most pleasant and friendly and made us feel very welcome.

  • "Generally a good stay, the extract fan from the pub kitchen vented into the back garden a bit annoying, although this is pointed out."

The garden was good for the dog as walled and no escape route. Plenty of parking and a pleasant walk to the river. One or two little things in the cottage could do with looking at, the bath plug was jamming, also could do with a shelf in the bathroom to place things on above the sink. But in general a good time had.

  • "The kitchen facilities were excellent; Everywhere was spotlessly clean."

The bedroom:- could do with a new mattress and better quality bedding and pillows; White towels looks better than brown (our opinion). Lounge section was mix matched; curtains/voile/ The suite we felt needed a clean and the cushions again were mix matched and didnt look clean. The rug on the floor looked very tired. Brilliant location; Staff in the pub were very friendly and the food was excellent.

The cottage was very clean and warm (we visted in November) and had surprsingly good wifi given the rural location. The only minor irritation was that, because the sleeping area is on an upper mezzanine within the roof gable, the headroom on one side of the bed is quite low.

  • "It’s a beautiful property in a wonderful location, however some improvements need to be made to make it a perfect stay, improvements to the property and the advert that won’t cost a lot of money but hopefully would give a better holiday experience."

Be clearer that’s it’s adjacent to the pub. This isn’t a negative point, it’s great that you an pop in for lunch or dinner, have a coffee in the morning but you do need to tell people how near it is. The advert does warn of associated noise but need to describe more that this is all pub related noise - customers, kitchen extractor fan, bottle bins being used etc. The description should state their isn’t a separate bedroom- it’s a bed in the gallery so there is no door to shut off any noise from the living area. There is only room to stand upright on one side of the bed. Be clear about this, it’s quirky and ok if you know about it. The cleaning needs improving - all surface’s are sticky, especially in the lounge area. Other reviews say the lighting inside is poor. Whilst it would be out of character to have bright lighting it could be vastly improved by clearing the windows of vegetation and cleaning them (wish I’d had a pair of garden shears with me!). 3 of the windows are completely overgrown with vegetation. If a customer is staying for more than a couple of days a washing machine is a must and there does seem to be room for one. Mop and bucket needed. Non stick cooking utensils needed if you don’t want to keep replacing scratched nonstick pans. An information book about the area and the property would be good. Am sure it has an interesting history. Wi-Fi- it doesn’t work at all, so you really can’t advertise that it has Wi-Fi. Again be honest.

The lighting is so bad in the living area --- could not have been able to read, 2. Sticky surfaces all around even the wooden stair banester leading to a bedroom, pillows, duvet flat and hard ,bottom sheet faded orange and no hint of freshness was enough for me to say to my partner " don't bother unpacking anything we are not stopping here, 3. To add insult a blower from the public house backed into our garden was so noisy and having read one review from the clients suffering a stay for three nights before us saying the blower started at 7am till 10pm has been deleted by the owner of Monks cottage obviously slipped by his order that all reviews must be passed by him ,( I WONDER WHY ) , When l confronted the owner of the public house he told me l was expecting hotel sheets , ""huh"" well my dog has a better bed than that So another 80mile home ,a wasted week ,and no chance of money's we paid for our holiday , You ask if I would like you to publish my feedback , ""YES"" but will you I wonder , we've had quite a few holiday s with Sykes and this is the first time you've let us down , so now it's your turn to take the good review with the bad .

Thank you for completing our feedback form. We were sorry to her that your were unhappy with the property on your arrival. The property is one of the oldest in the area and we feel that this has been lit sympathetically for a property of that age. The bed linen at Monks Cottage was bought new for 2021, and we have not received any complaints from previous guests over the standard of the linen or furnishing. We do say the cottage is behind an inn and we are sorry that the noise from the kitchens was of a disturbance to you, this is now listed in our property description. Property Owner

The very large extractor fan is immediately outside the cottage door. lt is very loud and runs from 07.30am to approx 11.00pm everyday, you cannot leave tbe door open as you get the horrible fatty smells in the cottage. People were constantly going back and forth throught the garden, it was not just the odd time for access but most days, then the gates were left off the latch. We booked this in march before the latest reviews were added from visitors this summer, if those reviews had been there before I booked I would have never booked this place.

Thank you for your feedback. I do apologise over the issues experienced with the wifi. We were changing suppliers and unfortunately the change over did not go as smoothly as we would have hoped and we were without wifi during your stay. The issues have now been rectified. Property Owner

Unsightly old broken pots and table in garden area. Overwhelming smell of dogs on the furniture, Inview of the current Covid cleaning procedures I strongly feel that even the basic cleaning regime had not been carried out. Bathroom listed as upstairs on original booking, not really suitable for less able going down 9 steps at night. Bed only about 1ft from the ground - more difficulties. No wardrobe or chair in bedroom. Ceiling so low cannot stand upright. . No upstairs main light switch. Bathroom shaver light not working. No comfortable garden seating. Very varied collection of china, only 2 small cereal bowls, no fruit or salad bowls. No instruction on using the heating. I would like to say that overall we had a very enjoyable holiday. The low recommendation for Sykes is also including that we could not contact them at all during the Covid period for any information. THRESHFIELD

Grassington 1 mile; Skipton 7 miles.

Threshfield is a small village in Upper Wharfedale bordering the nearby villages of Grassington, Linton, Hetton, Cracoe and Rylstone, home of the famous ‘Calendar Girls’. Threshfield is a thriving local community. A few minutes drive is Grassington, one of the most charming villages in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where you will find traditional stone cottages, galleries, restaurants and shops, which are clustered around the cobbled market place, plus a monthly farmers' market provides a mouthwatering range of organic and homemade local produce. Visitors can experience the delight of both the Grassington Festival held in June and the Dickensian Festival during December – both well worth a visit. Situated on the River Wharfe, with the extensive Grass Woods to the north of the village, this is a superb walking area.
