Just Show Me Thirsk Cottages
Remember 'All Creatures Great and Small'? Welcome to Thirsk, home of vet and author, James Herriot. This riverside market town nestles in the Vale of York and is a great base to explore North Yorkshire. And the best place to stay? One of our Thirsk holiday cottages, of course.
First stop the 'World of James Herriot', an award-winning attraction set in his 1940s' home. Next stop Thirsk Museum, birthplace of Thomas Lord - founder of the legendary Lord's Cricket Ground.
Other hotspots include the 15th Century Church of St. Mary's and Thirsk's bustling street market. The cobbled square comes alive on Mondays and Saturdays, with stalls selling everything from local produce to clothing. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the banter with the friendly locals!
From mice to mud, Thirsk is full of surprises!
Close by is the Mouseman Visitor Centre, showcasing beautifully handcrafted oak furniture and gifts, each piece embellished with a tiny carved mouse. Swap wood for the real thing and enjoy furry encounters at the Monk Park Farm. Or feel the adrenalin rush tackling humps, bumps, mud and water on off-road quads at Yorkshire 4x4 - just remember to hose yourself down before returning to your Thirsk cottage!
For walkers, the Blue Plaque and Thirsk Past & Present Heritage Trails take in the town and neighbouring region's notable buildings and historic sites. Otherwise head for Sutton Bank and enjoy some lovely walks, with sweeping views across the Vale of York and Dales. Round off the day watching movies at The Ritz or simply relaxing in your Thirsk holiday cottage.
