It's not every day you find such a gem as the Buttermere Valley, nestling in the northern part of the Lakes and featuring the two stunning lakes of Buttermere and Crummock Water, where motor boats are banned and peace and tranquillity are guaranteed.
Walks from your Buttermere cottage…
Think spellbinding scenery in every direction - calm blue lakes, majestic peaks, verdant woodlands and cascading waterfalls, mostly owned by the National Trust. Pack a picnic lunch and start with a leisurely 4.5 mile walk around Buttermere Lake, taking in a short path under a rock-hewn tunnel. For climbers and the more experienced walker, scale the heights of the 'Buttermere Round' or Wainwright's favourite mountain, Haystacks, offering unforgettable panoramic vistas from the top.
Follow the footpath up to Scale Force on the western side of Crummock Water, the highest waterfall in the area. Find dappled trails through Burtness Wood. Or saddle up and cycle the quiet country lanes of nearby Lorton Vale.
For thrills and adventure, Go Ape at the Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre or do something really daring and try the Via Ferrata at the Honister Slate Mine. Gentler options include game fishing, bird-watching, painting and photography.
The small hamlet of Buttermere has a small church, a couple of traditional inns and a scattering of cottages while, for a little more life and action, both Cockermouth and Keswick are a mere fifteen-minute drive away.
