Step back in time and book a Clovelly cottage, located in and around one of north Devon's prettiest coastal villages.
Picture the scene. A jumble of whitewashed, flower-strewn houses built into the rock-face of a 400ft cliff on the idyllic north Devon coast. A village that's blissfully traffic-free and home to donkeys and sledges rather than wheels. A village that's so unique; one that's been privately owned by the same family since 1738.
Exploring the village...
Start your tour at the award-winning Visitor Centre, designed in the style of a traditional Devonshire long barn and featuring audio visual displays, a cafe, picnic area and souvenir shop. Park your car and pay a small entrance fee, which helps to preserve the village and its exceptional charm.
Then carefully make your way down the steep, cobbled streets to the 14th Century harbour, dotted with colourful fishing boats and pleasure craft. Pose for a photo with a donkey. Enjoy fine food and drink at the New Inn or Red Lion Hotel. Step inside the Fisherman's Cottage, a small museum depicting the life of a fisherman in the 1930s. Also visit the Charles Kingsley Exhibition - Clovelly was his childhood home and inspiration for children's fantasy, 'The Water Babies'.
Watch the sun rise over Exmoor from the Look Out. Find Merlin's cave and a pretty waterfall down on the pebbled beach. Wander around Clovelly Court Gardens, its glasshouses brimming with exotic fruits and plants.
Add spectacular ocean vistas and a delightfully slow pace of life - that's what a Clovelly cottage holiday is all about!
