Whitby Abbey, a ruined monastery overlooking the North Sea, holds many tales. The original abbey was destroyed by successive raids by the Vikings, and the rebuilt abbey was destroyed by Henry VIII in 1540. The ruined abbey was made famous by Bram Stoker's Dracula, in 1897, where the beast resembling a large dog came ashore and ascended to climb the 199 steps leading up to the ruins.
